What interesting things have you only recently learned about?

To be clear, this is about things which have been true for some time and you only recently learned about, not things that only happened recently. In particular, recent deaths of celebrities and other high-profile individuals should go in the General RIP Thread.

Hey guys...and gals...I was just browsing through an XKCD strip and ended up learning that Jimmy Carter was attacked by a swimming rabbit.

So, what interesting things have you guys...and gals...only recently learned about?

You'd probably see worse on an episode of Wild Discovery back when it was on, and I watched that series from when I was 4 in 1995 to 2002 when it ended.

@CDRW: as I said, other zoos were offering to take the giraffe in.

[up][up] Yeah, but I got the impression that they didn't take that offer because the zoos doing the offering didn't have the proper facilities or set-up. I could easily be wrong though. It could just as easily be the fact that transporting giraffes is difficult, dangerous, and expensive.

LSD was first synthesized from a derivative chemical of ergot, the fungus that is thought to have been the cause of the hysterical symptoms in the young girls in Salem that started the Salem Witch Trials.

They also tested it on a lot of CIA agents. Must've been a fun job back then.

I wonder what would happen if you told people you were giving them LSD, but actually gave them a sugar pill.

And you could prime each group, with, say, articles or something. One could be that LSD's effects aren't as extreme as most people believe, and another could be that they're even more extreme than most people believe.

And you could try different coloured pills. White ones, yellow, green, purple.

Excuse me. I have to try SCIENCE!

(Fun fact: She Blinded Me With Science was initially to be the theme tune for The Big Bang Theory)

That would be amazing.

Sadly, that is unethical, because LSD is illegal, and no matter how scientifically-relevant something is, you cannot break the law.

[up]The link is too long for the forum software. I looked it up, though. A very interesting sentence.

As for the LSD thing, look up MKULTRA if you want to be disgusted.

[up] MK Ultra's how I found that out. Late night wikipedia browsing somehow led to past CIA experiments and cryptograms.

It's also the name of a cool song by Muse.

Tara Strong is Jewish. Which makes the Christmas Episode of The Fairly Odd Parents odd, in retrospect.

....I don't really think so. Christmas has the dubious honour as been seen as a secular holiday and beside her characters aren't necessarily Jewish.

This version of "All The Small Things" is by Kidz Bop. I always thought it was a Muppet version, even when I was five.

When you buy a house, you buy the physical property and the topsoil. The airspace and the ground underneath the topsoil still belong to The State; otherwise your permission would be needed every time they did sewage work.

Thus, The State needs to ask for permission (or use compulsory purchase orders...) when it has to disturb your topsoil.
