What interesting things have you only recently learned about?

To be clear, this is about things which have been true for some time and you only recently learned about, not things that only happened recently. In particular, recent deaths of celebrities and other high-profile individuals should go in the General RIP Thread.

Hey guys...and gals...I was just browsing through an XKCD strip and ended up learning that Jimmy Carter was attacked by a swimming rabbit.

@Zarek: Breeding problems. Giraffes of sexual maturity have to be kept so that there's one male for a group of females to prevent the males from fighting in the enclosed space. Marius reached sexual maturity, but there was no suitable place to transfer him for breeding. Keeping him alive in the zoo would most likely have lead to inbreeding, and contraceptives and castration would have been risky.

The law about it being illegal to get fish drunk in Ohio from what I can find seems to be an old offshoot of a law stating that it's illegal to poison the fish you are fishing.

Believe it or not I have heard about fishermen sharing their beers with the fish or pouring their beer into the water to disorient the fish.

Note to self the verb is pouring not pooring.

Does that actually work? Even if fish are vulnerable to alcohol like humans are, wouldn't it be too dilute to have any effect?

I wouldn't know, all I know is that it has happened and is most likely why the law exists/exited. Technically speaking I don't think there's an actual law nowadays but it is illegal to poison fishing waters.

There are plenty of laws that don't apply today, but they never bothered to remove.

It is possible to turn in a sweater with cashmere elbow patches into a dry-cleaners, get it back a full month later, and find out there was barely anything changed to it!

There used to be a footbridge between India and Sri Lanka made of coral. It was destroyed 500 years ago by a tropical storm

I'm wondering why they felt it would be a good idea to invite children to watch, but all in all, I don't see much of anything wrong with their methods or reasoning. They put it down in a humane way and put the body to good use.

I think the "inviting children to watch" thing was the main point of contention.

Not inviting people to watch would be a waste - what a perfect way to learn about anatomy. I would love to see an autopsy of an animal (I've never seen one - Finnish schools don't do that, even to frogs or anything.) I wouldn't want an animal to die just for that, but if it so happens that a convenient corpse is available, sure, I'll watch and learn.

However the giraffe wasn't even sick, just surplus. The zoo just wasted perfectly good livestock.

Inviting people to watch is fine. Children... eh...

I'm sure some would be fine with it, but overall I don't think it's a good thing for kids to see.
