What interesting things have you only recently learned about?
To be clear, this is about things which have been true for some time and you only recently learned about, not things that only happened recently. In particular, recent deaths of celebrities and other high-profile individuals should go in the General RIP Thread
.

@Zarek: Breeding problems. Giraffes of sexual maturity have to be kept so that there's one male for a group of females to prevent the males from fighting in the enclosed space. Marius reached sexual maturity, but there was no suitable place to transfer him for breeding. Keeping him alive in the zoo would most likely have lead to inbreeding, and contraceptives and castration would have been risky.

Believe it or not I have heard about fishermen sharing their beers with the fish or pouring their beer into the water to disorient the fish.

I would love to see an autopsy of an animal (I've never seen one - Finnish schools don't do that, even to frogs or anything.) I wouldn't want an animal to die just for that, but if it so happens that a convenient corpse is available, sure, I'll watch and learn.
