What interesting things have you only recently learned about?

To be clear, this is about things which have been true for some time and you only recently learned about, not things that only happened recently. In particular, recent deaths of celebrities and other high-profile individuals should go in the General RIP Thread.

Hey guys...and gals...I was just browsing through an XKCD strip and ended up learning that Jimmy Carter was attacked by a swimming rabbit.

Today I learned that bananas are technically vegetables

Oh really when?

No they're not. They're fruit. They contain the seeds of the banana tree. The ones we eat are seedless

@ Joey. Dammit.

I learnt that if you are a local tradesman; then you are three times more likely to be called using a local number than using a mobile number.

This is according to the top banner advert on this page.

You know, that actually sounds halfway plausible.

That sounds plausible. A mobile number seems unprofessional, whereas a local landline seems like you have an office in the city to call.

But no one uses landlines anymore!

#10087: Jan 18th 2014 at 6:47:12 PM

That's a pretty broad generalisation. Landlines are in declining use, but I'm sure there are lots of people who use landlines. tongue

Landlines are in use much more than you'd expect - and where they're not in use, they've largely been replaced by Vo IP phones.

Also, I found out that a comparison of value of the Venetian Lira was commonly against how much silk you could buy for it, because of how it was one of the last stops for silk, and how valuable it was in that period.

I knew about others, such as the Solidus, but I thought the Venetian Lira used others.

Yeah when given a choice a customer is always going to pick a local number over a mobile as it signify they are a long established local business member who can be trusted.

That and local land line calls often cost next to nothing.tongue

That reminds me. When I was younger, you got free broadband when you purchased a landline plan.

Now, you get a free landline plan when you purchase broadband. tongue

The English word 'Wiking' seems to be making an odd comeback as a sorta Internet joke. Yep, wiking is the English form of viking, or at least it was. I have no idea why it's suddenly started returning on odd parts of the internet.

In the usages I've seen it is unrelated to the panzer division.

If he does, words will be had.

Also, why do I keep thinking that I can capitalize numbers?
