What interesting things have you only recently learned about?

To be clear, this is about things which have been true for some time and you only recently learned about, not things that only happened recently. In particular, recent deaths of celebrities and other high-profile individuals should go in the General RIP Thread.

Marriage is neither heaven nor hell, it is simply purgatory.
Abraham Lincoln

I’m trying to figure out if this speaks more about the nature of Lincoln or his wife

Given his wife’s reputation, probably the later.

Two things.

  1. Japanese girls really DO where Zettai Ryouki. My school had a visit from few dozens of Japanese students and almost all girls were wearing them with varying degree, all of them really short pants type. I didn't really find them appealing, if noticed at all, but in RL, it really makes the girls' legs look really nice. It helps that they have a much more slender legs. I should stop...

  2. Lung is NOT a sack of air. It is filled with some bronchial...something.

He's around 70 now and is retiring this year. He is a really nice patient teacher.

The private detective work was for the Pinkerton police force and most of it was on insurance fraud, but he said following people around in a car was fun.

He's traveled many places and has told us lots of cool things about him.

From But You Screw One Goat

* One of the first (among many) bizarre sex laws placed on the books by the Ayatollah Khomeini in Iran was that if a man had sex with an animal, the animal must be killed, but its flesh could not be eaten afterwards.
**The restriction on eating the flesh only applied to residents of the same village; it was OK to trade the flesh to a neighbouring village.

Mental note: When traveling in Iran make sure all meat is local.

I have discovered that the director of The Starfighters instead of being incarcerated for his crimes against cinema, was instead allowed to continue his heinous work.

http://tolkiengateway.net/wiki/The_Hobbit#First_Edition

In the first edition, Gollum willingly bets his magic ring on the outcome of the riddle game. During the writing of The Lord of the Rings Tolkien saw the need to revise this passage, in order to reflect the concept of the One Ring and its powerful hold on Gollum…

…Tolkien explained the two different versions in the introduction of The Lord of the Rings, as well as inside "The Shadow of the Past", as a "lie" that Bilbo made up, probably because of the One Ring's influence on him, and which he originally wrote down in his book. Inside The Lord of the Rings, Bilbo finally confesses the real story at the Council of Elrond, although Gandalf had deduced the truth earlier. As Tolkien presented himself as the translator of the supposedly historic Red Book of Westmarch, where Bilbo and Frodo's stories were recorded, he further explained the two differing stories in The Hobbit by stating he had originally used Bilbo's original story, but later retranslated the work with the "true story" recorded by Frodo.
