What interesting things have you only recently learned about?

To be clear, this is about things which have been true for some time and you only recently learned about, not things that only happened recently. In particular, recent deaths of celebrities and other high-profile individuals should go in the General RIP Thread.

Hey guys...and gals...I was just browsing through an XKCD strip and ended up learning that Jimmy Carter was attacked by a swimming rabbit.

So, what interesting things have you guys...and gals...only recently learned about?

the term those girls are looking for is Ephebophile, actually.

I just learned that I have met Garcia Marquez twice when I was a little kid.

Meanings change. Most people uses "pedophile" to refer to anyone who lusts after or has sex with people under the age of consent.

But, since such a change is completely unnecessarey and reduces precision, it is a terrible change.

Never said the change was necessary. To stand against the vanguard of change as a wall dedicated to necessity is futile.

That was way too pseudo-poetic.

True, but the word for people who lust after teenagers is still ephebophile. And the new definition doesn't exactly invalidate that. In fact, if anything, it only makes you both. At the same time. And That's Terrible.

On my way, madam.

Damn it, hate translations because of that. "El amor en los tiempos del colera" does not translate as "Lovein the time of cholera"

And I'll stick to that to the very end of my Spanish speaking life, damn it!

Oh, I'll just add it to the index. It's been a long while since I've read his fiction. I prefer his articles and chronicles. He was a far better journalist, if you ask me.

Ivan The Terrible is an awesome World War Two propaganda movie of Casblanca quality. But it was broadcast in 1946.

Bruce Willis played the nerdy main guy in Death Becomes Her (a film I only just remembered having seen it probably 15 years ago) I actually said "oh COME ONE!" in disbelief when I found out.

The fact that someone was born the day Doug aired makes me feel frickin' old (no, that's not something I learned).
