What interesting things have you only recently learned about?
To be clear, this is about things which have been true for some time and you only recently learned about, not things that only happened recently. In particular, recent deaths of celebrities and other high-profile individuals should go in the General RIP Thread
.
So, what interesting things have you guys...and gals...only recently learned about?

Fran Drescher is getting a new show on TV Land called Happily Divorced.
Damn, that's a lotta redlinks. Fran was most famous for her starring role in The Nanny.

Site from which I took the data
, it appears as though the guy who wrote this put a lot of thought into it.
And here's a quote from the site:

Banned entirely for telling FE that he was being rude and not contributing to the discussion. I shall watch down from the goon heavens.Well, that's 3 portions of half a litre each, so it's not very much. A big glass of beer with each meal, 3 meals a day. Easy.
I sometimes drink beer with my meals, either non-alcoholic ('cause it's cheaper and I'm not trying to get drunk anyway) or normal ('cause it's way better). A ½-litre can is a pretty good size for a single meal.
Quod gratis asseritur, gratis negatur.OK, so they had an extra glass of ale between the meals or before they went to bed or something.
I still don't think it's a huge amount, though I can't consider it healthy.
But if you drink three portions like that over the course of the day, you probably won't be drunk at any point, so at least it's not socially harmful.
Quod gratis asseritur, gratis negatur.Rennet is used in cheese production. Rennet is basically the bacteria and such inside the stomachs of various animals, usually calves; the stomachs used are a bi-product of meat production.
So Yeah, animal has to die = not vegetarian. However, it's not something anyone I've ever met has said anything about, so I'm guessing it's not common knowledge. It really doesn't help that in the US at least, rennet isn't labelled on cheese packages; it's just "enzymes", which could be vegetarian-friendly plant or artificial rennet instead of animal rennet. You basically need to really do your research to know what you're buying.
If I really wanted I could put that level of effort in, but I could never get pizza at a restaurant without knowing where the cheese came from, for example.
annebeeche is spot-on. Like I said, some cheese is vegetarian (though obviously not vegan), but most isn't even that. It's not really common knowledge, most vegetarians I know don't even know.
It was quite the depressing thing for me to learn, given that I've been a vegetarian for two years and never stopped eating cheese.
A friend of mine who was vegetarian didn't eat cheese for that reason. She also avoided almost all jelly-like lollies, because they contained gelatine, which is an animal product.
I think sometimes she just said "If I don't read the packet, it doesn't count" and ate them anyway, though.
Be not afraid...I just recently learned the terms Filly, Colt, and Alicorn.
I now know more about horses than I probably should.
One of my few regrets about being born female is the inability to grow a handlebar mustache. -LandstanderLemuria was not purely a creation of Golden Sun, but comes from an actual (discredited) lost land
hypothesised during the 19th century.
I'm honestly surprised I didn't know this before.

"I can't imagine what Hell will have in store, but I know when I'm there, I won't wander anymore."

Mel Gibson did all the singing for John Smith in Pocahontas.
