What interesting things have you only recently learned about?
To be clear, this is about things which have been true for some time and you only recently learned about, not things that only happened recently. In particular, recent deaths of celebrities and other high-profile individuals should go in the General RIP Thread
.
So, what interesting things have you guys...and gals...only recently learned about?

My grandma still has her VCR, which is awesome.
Also, I hate when people talk like I've never seen a tape before, since that was the way I watched movies when I was a kid. :/

Banned entirely for telling FE that he was being rude and not contributing to the discussion. I shall watch down from the goon heavens. My Photo 101 teacher (who I love very much, I had her before for an art class) pretty much introduced film to us in this fashion.
Sure, I understand not knowing all the technicalities behind film (which we have to know for the class because we're developing our own pictures), but we used film when we were little kids.

Banned entirely for telling FE that he was being rude and not contributing to the discussion. I shall watch down from the goon heavens.Gore Vidal wrote the script for Ben Hur and included homoerotic subtext which he told the other main actor in, but didn't tell Charlton Heston about.
Emperor Wu liked cake, but not exploding cake! She was basically like, "Back before digital cameras came out, we used stuff called film. Here, this is what a roll of Kodak looks like."

Banned entirely for telling FE that he was being rude and not contributing to the discussion. I shall watch down from the goon heavens.I don't know, a lot of younger people have never dealt with film. I learned how to use cameras that operated with film, with the clicky dial and so on, but that doesn't translate into knowledge of how the medium works. Dodging? Burning? Wassat?
[1] This facsimile operated in part by synAC.Like I said, I don't mean the finer details like how a manual camera operates (we were kids, most of us likely didn't use manual cameras) or real dodging and burning, just the basics, like what film is and what it is used for.

Banned entirely for telling FE that he was being rude and not contributing to the discussion. I shall watch down from the goon heavens.I’m just going to assume at this point that he fought crime with a razor, because the 14th century would be way more awesome if a monk ran around using parsimony to solve crimes and broke out a razor when shit got real.
That my mum thinks I'm a hypocondriac, because I asked her what sort of health effects using a shower with mould on the tiles/ceiling would have.
Also that she thinks that not eating fruit is worse than mould health issues.
Seriously, after I asked her about the health effects, she called me back out to say "you know what would be causing health problems in this house? Our bad eating. No one eats fruit here."
Also that the health issues I've been having recently are listed here.
I'm really tempted to send that link to her over a facebook message and write something like "I'm a hypocondriac?"
Also, can "Things you didn't know until very recently" also be used as "Things you didn't realise until very recently"? Because I just realised I should really do as my avatar says...
