What interesting things have you only recently learned about?

To be clear, this is about things which have been true for some time and you only recently learned about, not things that only happened recently. In particular, recent deaths of celebrities and other high-profile individuals should go in the General RIP Thread.

Hey guys...and gals...I was just browsing through an XKCD strip and ended up learning that Jimmy Carter was attacked by a swimming rabbit.

I was watching I Claudius the other day and saw something shocking. Patrick Stewart with hair. Now, I know he wasn't bald his entire life, but only in the same sort of vague way that I know that humans evolved from Australopithecus. But there's a difference between understanding mankind's evolutionary history and running into an Australopithecus while going down to the shops. It was surreal.

I thought Sir Patrick Stewart had gone bald before he hit twenty?

Must have been a wig.

It's not over. Not yet.

There's some dark foreshadowing in the narration early on in Precious that you wouldn't catch until you saw the rest of the movie.

That there's a JFK memorial in Melbourne's Treasury Gardens. It's a big pond with fountains! and blackjack! and hookers!

@AHR: I'm actually not certain, but from what I can tell: burqa denotes the head covering, abayah is the bodily covering.

Um, isn't burqa the complete body covering that conceals the face?

EDIT: Based on google, burqa have a net that completely conceals the face, while the Abaya shows the eyes.

A head covering alone is a hijab, and they can be worn in different styles.

EDIT: I love this cute cartoon about different ways to wear the hijab in syria

I didn't know my dad was so finicky. Seriously. I buttered some bread, he was like "We can't eat this bread! It's stale!" and when I got some more bread that felt perfectly nice, he took it and said "This is stale too!" Apparently, hard crust = stale and uneatable. Which is strange, since he's served me sandwhiches made of bread with harder crusts than that.

Also pumpkin seeds are nice.

I've met reindeer. They're adorable.
