What interesting things have you only recently learned about?

To be clear, this is about things which have been true for some time and you only recently learned about, not things that only happened recently. In particular, recent deaths of celebrities and other high-profile individuals should go in the General RIP Thread.

Hey guys...and gals...I was just browsing through an XKCD strip and ended up learning that Jimmy Carter was attacked by a swimming rabbit.

That "shlick" is the female equivalent of "fap".

That the whole Do Want, Do Not Want thingy is not proper British English but a memetic mutation.

Sames goes for a lot of sentences that are used pretty much only memetically on the internet and put me in some awkward situation when I naively use them in the first degree and people look at me funny.

I was originally informed that skiing wasn't invented until 19th or 20th century due to how likely one was to break one's ankles without proper boots.

But then I just learned today that it was a form of transportation used by the prehistoric Scandinavians for hunting. There are even some Norse gods who are frequently depicted on skis.

Which makes me ridiculously happy because skiing is one of the few sports I actually enjoy.

Captain America was originally created as a Protestant. Maybe he still is, I don't know.

He's the personification of America. Of course he's a Protestant.

Even though graphology is mostly bunk, you actually can work out whether or not someone is suicidal from reading their handwriting.

Considering I'm female and previously didn't consider myself attracted myself to either sex, it is kind of an interesting development. [lol]

I just learned what Thread Hopping actually is. For some (sort of obvious) reason, I always thought it meant hopping into a thread from another one, but that's how essentially every thread is entered so it doesn't make sense. The true definition certainly makes more sense, and I think I'll pothole it in more from now on, 'cause often I do thread hop to save time.

There are extensive oil reserves underneath Beverly Hills. The wells are hidden in plain sight inside four large windowless, soundproof buildings visible on Pico and Olympic Boulevards. The ninety-seven currently active wells all extend diagonally from these four structures, sucking the oil right out from under the multi-million dollar homes of the residents of one of the most affluent cities in the entire world. The four "drilling islands" together produce a little less than a million barrels every year, and it's estimated that approximately 11 million barrels of oil still remain in the field.
