What interesting things have you only recently learned about?

To be clear, this is about things which have been true for some time and you only recently learned about, not things that only happened recently. In particular, recent deaths of celebrities and other high-profile individuals should go in the General RIP Thread.

Hey guys...and gals...I was just browsing through an XKCD strip and ended up learning that Jimmy Carter was attacked by a swimming rabbit.

So, what interesting things have you guys...and gals...only recently learned about?

DJ Shadow's "Midnight in a Perfect World" samples a song called "Outta State" by a group called Akinyele, the song is on an album called Vagina Dinner.

Most palaeoanthropologists consider Homo erectus an evolutionary side branch that is not connected to Homo sapiens.

No one would stop me if i tried to sneak a bomb into my city's municipal building.

[up]I had a recent realization that no one could effectively stop somebody from sneaking a bomb on to my university campus. Considering we're 50% Jewish and are known for being a Jewish school in general, I'm almost surprised (though incredibly grateful) that we've never been attacked in any way, not even vandalism that I know of...

Really, there are many places to which it's easy to smuggle a bomb.

No, not really. There's nothing to sneaking in weapons.

The reason we don't have many terrorist attacks is that only an idiot would consider terrorism to be a good way to achieve your goals.

I mean, look at 9/11. I mean, yes, Iraq caused a major loss of face for the American government and was triggered indirectly by 9/11, but you'd have to go to Xanatos Roulette levels to give that as one of bin Laden's goals. And if you look at what happened in Afghanistan, bin Laden was removed from power, which is also not likely what he wanted.

Oh it's not about goals. Or the challenge. Just good old "i could kill X people if i was at any point drunk/nuts/stupid enough to really do it".

Um.. not that i feel any such needs. Just talking hypothetically.

[up][up]Who says you can't be afraid of idiots? If they're capable enough to make a bomb but stupid enough to use it, then I'm automatically kind of scared.

[up]I would never consider bombing anything, but I think I know how you feel. To me, it's empowering just to realize that I can enter and explore various places without anyone thinking twice about it. Being a young and harmless looking, very ordinarily dressed kind of guy can have advantages...

I'll never forget the thrill of, while volunteering at a hospital, realizing that my volunteer's badge and courier-type job (and the dress code, which made me look respectable) gave me an excuse to go anywhere that wasn't locked and believe me, I did.

Well, there aren't that many people capable enough to make a bomb but stupid enough to use it. Look at, say, the Columbine shooters. They made bombs that were supposed to go off and massively increase the death count, but they failed.  *

Terrorism is basically the stupidest thing you can worry about. Well, maybe terrorism or shark attacks.

I have an irrational phobia of plants.

Just to put things in perspective; is terrorism a sillier concern than hedges?

Yes. I wouldn't be surprised if more people were killed by plants(through allergic reactions or something) than terrorists.

Statistics are waay too easy to "readjust" to the point one is trying to make. I hate it when i hear some big important dude on TV say "More people die each year of X than of Y." Like you would know

Yeah, I saw concept art for Marathon RED in one of Ian McConville's galleries way back when, and I believe he's mentioned it a few times in the rant. Don't know if it's still there.

It's just a weird synchonicity. Especially since what I've seen of Three Panel Soul is kind of clever, whereas that page is very 18-year-old. >_>

Brown is actually derived from the orange part (orange + grey) of the colour spectrum. It can be described as dark orange.
