What interesting things have you only recently learned about?

To be clear, this is about things which have been true for some time and you only recently learned about, not things that only happened recently. In particular, recent deaths of celebrities and other high-profile individuals should go in the General RIP Thread.

Funny thing is, The Happening doesn't have much of a TWEEST at all.

But it's still a stupid movie.

The United States is classified as having a "moderate" chance of becoming a failed nation.

Source? It’s not that I don’t believe you, but I’m curious about the timeline we’re given to fail or succeed.

Unless we have a "moderate" chance of failing from now until the sun burns out.

Hmmm, seems to be a weird way of going over how well a countries government is doing at the moment. Fascinating.

For the longest time I wasn't aware that Carly McKillip was only about 12 when she voiced Sakura in Cardcaptors. I am surprised, since I always liked her better than her Japanese voice actor and personally thought she did a great job. At least my suspicion about the role being Tuesday for her has a lot more weight with this in mind.

Switzerland

The age of consent in Switzerland is 16 years, which also applies for BDSM play. Children (i.e. those under 16) are not subject to punishment for BDSM play as long as the age difference between them is less than three years.

Teenagers can be kinky too.

But so can kids. C'mon, I know people who were really interested in tying other kids up with jump ropes...

There’s actually some linguistic evidence (PDF file if that blows up anyone’s computer) that the Tanakh creation story in Genesis dosen’t mean “day” in a literal sense.

Calling that game involving stones, cutting implements, and looselead "Paper, Rock, Scissors" doesn't seem to be as common as I thought it was.

No, it's that the preferred order for most people seems to be... "Rock, Paper, Scissors!" We always used the "Paper, Rock, Scissors" order when I was a kid, in my family, and suddenly nobody ever seems to use that anymore.
