What interesting things have you only recently learned about?
To be clear, this is about things which have been true for some time and you only recently learned about, not things that only happened recently. In particular, recent deaths of celebrities and other high-profile individuals should go in the General RIP Thread
.
So, what interesting things have you guys...and gals...only recently learned about?

I'll never be able to think of Kill Bill or Vonage in the same way ever again.
Justice is a joy to the godly, but it terrifies evildoers.Proverbs21:15 FimFiction account. That I horribly failed to be a Munchkin back when I played that cleric who eventually became a god.
I'm spoilertagging on the off-chance you don't feel like reading nerd self-rage. Okay, so, our DM, for story purposes, gave each member of the party an artifact specifically designed to play on our strengths, since we were fighting armies of demons and opposing the Big Bad of the entire multiverse. Nice stuff. My artifact, the Crown of Lordly Enlightenment, played on how I was a multiclass cleric/sorcerer, definitely leaning more towards the cleric, and how I used Wisdom and Charisma for many things, including spells. I had gotten permission from the DM to implement a variant found in the Epic-Level Handbook: when using Spellcraft to cast an epic spell, you use whatever ability your spellcasting is derived from. Normally Spellcraft uses Intelligence, which is a wizard's strong suit, but clerics and sorcerers use Wisdom and Charisma, respectively. So this is important: I was using Wisdom to cast epic spells, using Spellcraft as a Wisdom-based skill check to do so.
One of the many abilities of the Crown of Lordly Enlightenment was called Deific Foresight. The ability had active and passive facets to it. The active one meant I could declare, twice a day, any Wisdom- or Charisma-based skill or ability check a critical success (as if I had rolled a 20). "Critical success" is another house-rule of this DM, and it applies to most every d20 roll you can think of. Critical success is exactly what it sounds like: automatically succeeding the check despite whatever the difficulty class of the check was. The passive facet meant that I could not possibly roll a critical failure on any Wisdom- or Charisma-based skill or ability check, including Will saves.
Now, I actually ended up taking advantage of the passive facet of this ability by using it to avoid the environmental dangers of being inside the Far Realm, which requires Will saves every hour to avoid going insane. Since time doesn't pass in the Far Realm, I was able to develop epic spells with virtually no time lost in the campaign, though I still had to spend boatloads of money to do it. I never used the active facet; I didn't consider it a useful ability. I've only caught it going over the character sheet months after the campaign's end: with Spellcraft for epic spells being a Wisdom-based skill check, I could automatically critically succeed on casting epic spells. This means I could develop an epic spell I would have no hope of casting normally, and critically succeed on casting it twice a day. I could literally invent an epic spell with an infinite Spellcraft DC, capable of doing anything, and I could cast it twice a day.
When the realization set in, I yelled a string of expletives and possibly invented a dark language in seeking out a curse that would do my nerd self-loathing justice. I mean, sure, the DM probably wouldn't have let that fly, and probably wouldn't have let me make a 20,000+ DC epic spell anyway, but damn it...

Well, at least you got to have one of the coolest references to TTGL ever.
I assure you, I'm quite familiar with all of the references to TTGL.
"I can't imagine what Hell will have in store, but I know when I'm there, I won't wander anymore."I doubt that. Considering how many artists there are, and hallucinogens are the steroids of the arts, I seriously doubt that.

I spread my wings and I learn how to fly....I think it's less that most editors think Drugs Are Bad and more that those editors who do have a tendency to assume that thinking otherwise is some kind of gross aberration.
