Starship Troopers is lagging a teensie bit.
You can't even write racist abuse in excrement on somebody's car without the politically correct brigade jumping down your throat!I finished Purple Hibiscus. Great read. The prose is very easy, and sometimes a bit too flowery, but this forms a great contrast to the horrors discussed. I'll probably pick up Half of a Yellow Sun soon, which is by the same author.
If an offense come out of the truth, better it is that the offense come than that the truth be concealed.I finished Starship Troopers. It focused far too much on the military minutae(right word?), but that's my only complaint.
You can't even write racist abuse in excrement on somebody's car without the politically correct brigade jumping down your throat! There's lots of angst, yes, but whether or not it turns into Wangst is YMMV.
"I can't imagine what Hell will have in store, but I know when I'm there, I won't wander anymore."•Steven Erikson's Malazan Book of the Fallen series has a nasty habit of this. To be fair, things really are pretty bad for the characters and the world they are in. It wasn't too bad until the very latest installments, where not only did several characters (*cough* Seren Pedac *cough* Nimander Golit *cough*) complain all the time (sometimes just to themselves in their heads, but still) but they repeated each and every problem every time the characters reappeared in the story. We get it already! SHUT UP for gods' sake
This makes it sound unbearable.
I didn't think it was that bad at all.
Like I said, YMMV.
People pretty much either love the series or hate it. There are few that lie in between.

"I can't imagine what Hell will have in store, but I know when I'm there, I won't wander anymore."Double post so I can say I've been reading Hofstadter's I Am A Strange Loop. It's pretty good. It's like GEB but easier to read. There's less information as well, but at least this time you can actually easily understand the point he's making. Hell, he practically spoon feeds it to you.
"I can't imagine what Hell will have in store, but I know when I'm there, I won't wander anymore."The Passion of New Eve looks kind of Anvilicious to me so I'll check out The Infernal Desire Machines of Doctor Hoffman. Thanks.

Kill all math nerdsI like Angela Carter immensely, though sometimes she really overdoes the symbolism. Great prose style, still.

If an offense come out of the truth, better it is that the offense come than that the truth be concealed. Why am I supposed to dislike Pride And Prejudice, again?
[1] This facsimile operated in part by synAC.Because Austen, like Bronte, has an unfortunate tendency to flanderize her own characters and then gleefully point out their lack of depth as though that were a fault of anything but her own writing...
But Pride And Prejudice is pretty fun, apart from that.
If an offense come out of the truth, better it is that the offense come than that the truth be concealed.I can deal with it. I'm a sucker for Belligerent Sexual Tension and making fun of rich people.
[1] This facsimile operated in part by synAC.Oh yes, the Belligerent Sexual Tension between Darcy and Lizzie is masterful.
Have you seen the Keira Knightley movie version? She is absolutely perfect. And so cute!

If an offense come out of the truth, better it is that the offense come than that the truth be concealed.Nnnnnope. My teach says it's inaccurate, so we're going to watch some of the hours-long BBC adaptation instead. And I like to watch adaptations after the original when I can anyway.
[1] This facsimile operated in part by synAC.Well the first thing we read was Jane Eyre, so suffice to say I haven't had high expectations.
We also watched the unabridged (Kenneth Branagh) adaptation of Hamlet. Can't say I liked it much.
[1] This facsimile operated in part by synAC.I don't recall that one very well, but the Mel Gibson version was fun (all the more so since he looked like a blond Maximus. Branagh is in a really good version of Othello, though.

Started reading Pride And Prejudice in school. I like it so far, but not for the reasons that I expected to. It's like watching so many starving rats pick at each others' ragged fur.
