It just seemed like he was too naive, heartfelt, and outspoken at times for an older man. Though maybe that's the sterotypes of typical older protagonists working their way into my subconscious.
It's been a while since I played it though, so I'm not entirely sure.
i would sum him up as a "hope for the best, expect the worst" kind of guy. A good example of that is when they go to the junkyard and dad Nie R's dialogue betrays that he already expected the two kids' mother to be dead, while brother nier is legitimately shocked because of his childishly sunny happy-go-lucky attitude towards everything.

i haven't really played replicant or understand much japanese, but from what i've read he's basically the gist of brother nier is that he's a massive subversion of JRPG protagonists.
he starts out as a stereotypical Idiot Hero happy-go-lucky shounen protagonist for the first half of the game. after the second half sets in he kind of completely snapped. He doesn't become just moody and cold like Squall or Cloud, he's actually REALLY bitter, angry, and murderous, kind of like caim from drakengard 1. it actually is a HUGE contrast in comparison to dad nier, who only changes very subtly, and one of the things that actually work better in Replicant.
1. The new Nier will not take dual-release approach, as the developers believe "the time has passed for treating the western and Japanese markets so differently".
2. Nier would feature "three playable characters, two of which we have seen already; the white-haired girl who featured prominently in the trailer, and a small boy shown in a brief trailer shot standing on top of a building. The final character has yet to be revealed."
3. The gameplay will be a hybrid of Nie R original gameplay + Platinum Games’ combat style. Might be PS 4 exclusive.
4. The story will stand as a new story (with less connection with previous games). Previous games’ character will appear as cameos. But "returning players however, will enjoy a lot of nods and easter eggs from its predecessor."
5. No “delete your save-file to save your lovely ones” ending (there will be multiple playthroughs, though)
6. No other gameplay type will be infused to the game (like platformer, shoot-em-up, or Resident Evil style on the original game)

When you beat Nier 2, not only do you lose all of your save data, but every single byte of data from the game itself is wiped from both the P S3s' hardrive and the gamedisk. The game will also hack into the PS 3 itself, preventing you from reinstalling the game regardless of whether you have a digital copy or buy a new disk. The end result is that you are indeed trolled harder.
Completing Nier 3 will brick your console.
PC Gamers will be unaffected initially. However, after turning their computer on the next morning, they will find that the entire hard drive has been wiped and replaced with a basic Windows Vista operating system.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.i mean, part of the reason why the whole save deletion thing was so amazing wasn't just because it's a hilariously bold thing to demand from gamers, it was because it worked in context with what the game was trying to achieve.
in order to save kainé, nier has to erase his own existence as the pact price. if this had played out as just a cutscene it would have been cool, but they went the extra mile to simulate nier's own dilemma for the player themselves, through the game's systems. it completely blurs the line between you and nier, at that point you two are the same. It proves that you don't need a silent protagonist to associate with your player character. It's just not selecting a menu option they're asking you to make an ACTUAL sacrifice to save someone that you care about, which means it's much more meaningful. and they're not just messing with you, it REALLY DOES delete all your data and you can never make another file with the same name. they effectively erased your experiences permanently from the game, the only proof you have is the lunar tear, just like Kainé.
It uses the unique strengths of the medium to deliver an experience and foster an emotional connection to the narrative that would not be possible outside of a game. I legitimately think it's one of the greatest moments of storytelling I have ever seen in a game and a testament to Yoko's talent. the game doesn't IMPOSE this choice onto you, most players will choose it because they care about Kainé and legitimately want to save her.
i was mostly joking, but yeah, there's no real point in them trying to one-up that by bricking your system or whatever because it wouldn't have the same effect. it wasn't even really a troll, it was a masterstroke of mechanics as storytelling. i'm really glad that yoko understands that, he's not the kind of creator who's content just to do the same thing every time.

Really? I never see things like that the way you evidently do. But I think I can see what you mean.
But wait, don't you get anything out of doing it? Like a Platinum trophy or anything? I imagine it'd be hard to brag to your friends that you beat the game when reaching the very very end makes you lose all of your data...
you do get an achievement which is required for plat'ing the game, which you can still do even after the save data gets erase.d
taro doesn't really care about stuff like trophies or bragging rights though. he seems to have something against completionists because every game he's been in has had getting 100% a massive pain in the ass and the rewards are super trolly like the joke ending drom drakengard 1.

The joke ending from Drakengard 1? You mean the rhythm game above Tokyo? Because, uh, that sequence is the only reason Nie R even exists.
but HOW?Yes, I know. My point was moreso that it was an elaborate joke ending which was a pain in the ass to get and was so comical, disjointed and out of place that Yoko had to "hide in a bunker" until the backlash died out.
the fact that he and his team created this whole elaborate and interesting backstory out of a JOKE says a lot about them.
I would totally love them if they actually did the console bricking thing, it's such a dick move.
I really like the follow up to that ending in Nie R's backstory.

So... people in SA noticed what they called a "lady dong"
◊ between the legs of the character in the trailer.
They seem to be taking this as proof that she is Kaine,
"Please crush me with your heels Esdeath-sama!....It just looks like the fold of her skirt to me. -_-
"If you aren't him, then you apparently got your brain from the same discount retailer, so..." - Fighteer

Square wasn't chasing the JRPG audience with Nie R. They wanted it to do well overseas, so they tried to make it more stereotypically appealing for western players. even though nier sold badly because their marketing was horrible it did kinda work because older people usually like dad nier over bro nier because his relationship with yonah feels more genuine and powerful and because playing as an old man in JRPG's is really rare.
