A general thread for discussion of the Harry Potter books. Any new books set in the same world are also on-topic.
Games, films and other adaptations may be more appropriate for other threads if they're being discussed in isolation.
The HBO tv series has its own thread
.
Mod Notes:
- Media threads are primarily for fans of the works they cover. Not everyone will like everything, of course, and that's especially true in a franchise like Harry Potter. It's fine to say a particular story within the franchise doesn't work for you, or to talk about why it doesn't work for you. But please try not to dwell on the negativity for too long. Complaints shouldn't take up too much space on a thread that's intended for fans.
- This is a thread to talk about Harry Potter and the content of the stories, not a place to talk about J. K. Rowling's more controversial views. If there's something newsworthy where Rowling's activities become relevant (e.g. it affects her relationship to new Potter works and adaptations), that's fair enough. Otherwise it's all been said already and we don't need to repeat it.
there doesn't seem to be a general HP topic...

...the fuuuuuuck
Okay, I've never seen something THAT bad. And I've read fics of ill repute. And HPATMOR is a highly respected fic, and it STILL has mind-screwing nonsense like that.
I'm feeling strangely happy now, contented and serene. Oh don't you see, finally I'll be, somewhere that's green...@Medicus: The Godfather was split in three parts, and one of them was a flashback, in the middle of the plot to Vito's life in Italy.
It's not exactly naive. And it can happen. But it's tough. And definetly worthwhile.I've seen a lot of REALLY fucking bad fanfiction. What gets my hackles up is when a bad fanfic (where an eleven year old is planning to rape a ten year old) is actually rather popular and considered "good". Or Hogwarts Exposed, which is basically the demented ramblings of a pedophile, but still has a fairly large Yahoo! group. Yech.
In fact... two links.
The first is to Opedius Flower. Voldemort isn't around, so Lily and James have more kids. Over the course of the fic, Harry kills his brother and father, and has sex with his mother and his sister. In a threesome. I'm not sure it was consensual or not [Edit: It is. Dark Lord Potter had a field day.
], I didn't want to read the text any closer. I skimmed the whole thing and regretted that.
Oh, and the second is Family Whore
. At the age of ten, Ginny becomes the family whore. This means that she can be fucked by any member of the family at any time. Including her mother. Yay!
(Neither of those links will take you to the fic. The second is a partial sporking. I'm not that cruel.
)
What I was thinking was that these three non-Harry-focused chapters would take place throughout the books as a kind of "intermission" from the rest of the story.

It's not over. Not yet.Neither of those sound that bad. Then again some of the first adult fiction I read upon gaining access to the internet was incest stuff off Literotica.
I fully acknowledge I'm a degenerate but fics like that can be rather interesting to me.
But I hate Harry and Ginny so not sure about if I'd like these anyway.
The problem there is that the style of the rest of the series doesn't sit well with that.
You'd have four books, narrated purely by Harry- and then, as you're sitting, reading Order of the Phoenix and having sex fantasies about Luna, you're suddenly confronted by this one chapter narrated by Draco.
You're like, whoah, what the fuck, wait a moment. you go back- yep, Harry. You skip forward- Harry. You go back and check your previous books- yep, all Harry.
So why the fuck is Draco suddenly taking up book space now?
As I said earlier. People can pull it off well, if they're good enough writers. J.K.Rowling just... isn't.
There are too many toasters in my chimney! You'd have four books, narrated purely by Harry
Oh, I get it, you've got me confused with Kino.
And I do see where you're coming from. So I'll just quietly drop it.

It's not over. Not yet.Let's talk about how fantastic the time travel parts in Prisoner of Azkaban were, then.
So, was it all just a Stable Time Loop, or is it impossible for time to be changed at all in Harry Potter?

It's not over. Not yet.![]()
... Did you somehow manage to miss the serious discussion of the layout of the book that came immediately before that?
I never did get that. If Harry went back in time to save himself, then who saved that Harry? But if another Harry saved that Harry, then there had to have been another one to save that Harry.
There had to have been a starting point. And who saved Starting Harry?
There are too many toasters in my chimney!
It's a heavy topic. I'd prefer to lighten the mood where I can, even if it's by being stupid and creepy.

I did wonder that, actually. But I'm more interested in how the first Harry got out alive. Or does it have the power to pre-emptively save you?
Think of the abuse you could do with a game breaker like that.
There are too many toasters in my chimney! To be fair, from what I read, Harry Potter And The Methods Of Rationality seemed to be pretty good aside from that brainfart (dickfart?) on the part of the author.
I'm feeling strangely happy now, contented and serene. Oh don't you see, finally I'll be, somewhere that's green...Stable Time Loops don't exactly work that way. The Harry who saved in the first place is the same one who saved him when Harry went pack in time - unlike if it were another kind of time travel situation, there's no alternate universes - it's all one timeline.

But the statement "History is changed" implies that there was an 'Original' History that was altered, no? Typically one where Harry got eaten.
[[tvtropes.org/pmwiki/lb_i.php?lb_id=12919183980B30760200 Liveblog of]] John Carter Of MarsJokes aside, maybe he wasn't saved by Time-travelling Harry on the first time. After all, Harry didn't recognize the Stag immediately.
Of course this is all theories and WMG.

Dude, i saw one where Harry went back and fucked his mom...shit is weird.
