In related news, a new Higurashi review!

This taught me that adaptations are like people. If you say that you are X, when you are Y, everyone will get angry at you when they realize your true form. If you say that your series is horror mystery, when it is actually fantasy drama, everyone will get angry at DEEN and Kai when they realize it.

It... it's not horror-mystery?

God, this show is so confusing.

Anyway, just finished up Meakishi-hen. Good god, is Shion the Yandere poster girl.

Anyone who assigns themselves loads of character tropes is someone to be worried about.

But she pulls it off extremely well, nonetheless.

Also, I think the series forsakes Eye Scream for Fingore. Still disturbing as fuck, though.

True that. I was squicked by that scene. Offhand, one just bugs me I have about the franchise is people mistaking Rena for a Yandere when she's actually a Yangire. Only in shipping fics is Rena possibly a Yandere, since canon seems to be leaning towards Keiichi/Mion, given what the dying Keiichi could have possibly whispered in Mion's ear at the end of Minagoroshi-hen, and Mion's actions shortly afterward.

By the way, it's Meakashi-hen. Grammar Nazi! tongue

I dunno. I thought canon was leading towards Keiichi/Rena with the last episode of Rei. I get the context of that scene, but the way the Rena acted as opposed to her other "loves" led me to this conclusion. And then, they never actually told you the results of the extraction process. So yeah.

Though it definitely seems that Keiichi/Anyone-other-than-Satoko-and-Rika is possible.

The last episode of Rei isn't canon in the sense that Matsuribayashi-hen was. It IS epic Ship Tease though. It was based on the doujin game Higurashi Daybreak, which became part of the animated canon due to Word of Dante.

EDIT: I've read a decent Keiichi/Rika fanfic. The lolicon aspect was practically not there, which made it just fine.

Well then I'm completely and totally wrong. Rei and its canonness just confuses me.

@Mapi-chan: I personally think Keiichi/ Anything That Moves is possible, thanks to the total player they they got for Keiichi in the live action movie.

From what I can tell, here's the breakdown of Rei:

  • Hajisarashi-hen - Happens before Matsuribayashi-hen, so this reality is not canon as of the epilogue.
  • Saikoroshi-hen - Happens shortly after Matsuribayashi-hen, this is said to be the True End.
  • Hirukowashi-hen - Unspecified when this happens, but it most probably happens before Matsuribayashi-hen, so it isn't canon as of the epilogue.

You can argue that in the same vein, Minagoroshi-hen is just as canon as these are, but Rika herself used Minagoroshi-hen as the key to finally win in Matsuribayashi-hen; thus, those two arcs are related.

@Mapi-chan: I personally think Keiichi/ Anything That Moves is possible, thanks to the total player they they got for Keiichi in the live action movie.
Let's just agree on this. I mean, I've read Satoko/Keiichi so it can't be that bad. tongue

Ow. I got spoiler'd by Mapi-chan's last post. Thankfully, I don't know the gist of what happens in each arc (or Kai and Rei in general) before I started watching it, as I did for Meakashi-hen.

I DID IT! I was able to do it in time! I finally finished Higurashi no Naku Koro ni! AHAHAHAHAHAHAAAA Aaaa!

Now, I think I'll start watching Kai next weekend. Or over the course of the week. I dunno.

It appears that now, the more surreal bits, the things I had assosciated with Kai, they are now starting to appear. And I'm talking like Rena. Or Keiichi. Or maybe Shion. I dunno.

Before watching the Atonement arc (what's the Japanese name for it?), I thought Rena was a little... weak. In comparison to Shion and Keiichi, that is. But taking the entire class hostage? Wow. She has balls.

Also, maggots are creepy as all hell.

Quick Meakashi-hen question: Why, exactly, did Shion stab Keiichi?

Point taken.

Also, the Keiichi vs. Rena fight was all sorts of awesome.

It is. It's currently at episode 18, which was the conclusion of EP3. Next episode is Ange's interference by way of Bernkastel.

Okay. I still have a while to wait until I can get it all in one spot.

I wish the Visual Novel could keep me interested. It's a little slow for my tastes.

The first novel gets A LOT faster in the second day. From there on, they are all pretty fast, IMO.
