just binged the entirety of QC over the course of the last week and i absolutely loved it! it has some issues, of course - a lot of characters are forgotten or ignored forever, the genre shift is palpable and clearly unplanned, and i'm not a fan of some arcs and characters, but overall it's an incredibly entertaining, sweet comic that's completely hooked me.
I, Furudo Erika... have duct tape..!I still, without fail, find most of the first few years' strips to be anywhere from chuckle- to belly laugh-worthy. The humor has mellowed some, but it's still a captivating read, and very few of the things that have really annoyed some readers have gotten to me. I think the one thing that's truly bugged me is how Deus ex Machina'd the resolution of the Corpse Witch storyline was.
I still feel like the comic peaked during the period from when Marten got the job at the library up to the end of his dad’s wedding, but unlike some other webcomics that I think have passed their peak, this one I still find enjoyable.
The triple whammy of the beach house, station and wedding arcs in particular were wonderful.
Joke? Why are you calling it a joke? You drew a picture of two dudes hugging and wrote "I love hugs!" on it.Marten and Dora as a couple was like, peak mid-aughts webcomic and it was glorious. And then yeah, the comic arguably reached its creative peak from the time the interns were introduced up through Marten and Claire’s Will They or Won't They?.
It’s dropped off a bit in quality since then, but I like to think of it similar to the last few seasons of The Office. Sure, it’s nowhere near as good anymore. But there’s still flashes of the old brilliance (anything happening in the Marigold/Dale/Momo/May household is fantastic and we don’t get enough of it), and I like (most of) the characters enough by now that I want to make sure they’re doing ok.
I still think Spooky/Yay is a terrible character that isn't really improved by having them comment from the sidelines instead of actually solving everyone's problems.
For me, its whenever we get to see more of Marten and Claire’s relationship. I really hope we get to see some payoff with Claire’s dad, just because it’d mean more page time for her.
Whereas I think they immediately became boring the second they actually resolved the Unresolved Sexual Tension.
Oh, I love that they get to be boring. Its so rare for trans characters to just... be in a relationship, without drama or major problems. Its a really nice change of pace.
Yeah, but stuff can happen to them outside of that, or their relationship could at least be interesting. The way they’re used now they just feel very passive.
Presumably why Claire is currently pushing Marten into a new career.
Meanwhile, Elliot's high school prejudices come out.

He's no longer a cinnamon roll. I'd say he's more sourdough.
Disgusted, but not surprisedYeah Jeph seems to have just completely forgot just how much of a smug asshole Yay was during their first appearance and rewired them into comic relief. The new can be endearing, but I'm personally not forgetting the dickery behavior.

I wouldn't say sourdough. I'd call him, at worst, a 9 Grain loaf with pumpkin seeds and the like baked through it - a brand called Helga's makes a loaf like this and it's so delicious you can eat it on its own. Not as sweet or delightful as a cinnamon roll, but still very delicious and varied in its flavour profile.
Come sail your ships around me, and burn your bridges down.It doesn't help that the only thing keeping Yay from literally waving a hand and fixing any problems that come along is character whim.
http://www.mansionofe.comWell, that and a weakly-defined wish to preserve The Masquerade.
= Spindriver =How does he go from that to throwing people out of bars? I mean, we’ve seen how his professional persona is far more steady and confident than his everyday personality, but…
HIGH SCHOOL FUCKING SUCKED AND ANYONE WHO SAYS OTHERWISE IS EITHER DELUSIONAL OR A FUCKING LIAR.
- deep breath* .....better. You can't hold shit like that in, you'll get ulcers.
I personally remember it more being a tedious slog with scattered moments of suckage and, yes, fun.
http://www.mansionofe.comSomewhere along the line, he's learned how to adopt a useful mask. It'd be interesting to know how he accomplished that — he may well have had help — but it's not entirely unique. Though his mask is nicer than many.
I could imagine, say, him being roped into an assistant-security job by a more extrovert friend who recognised that simply having another slab of muscle behind him would achieve enough, and then picking up the techniques until they became a working skill set. Much the same as he probably did in sports, actually.

= Spindriver =High school was mostly ok for, also a bit of a slog. Now middle school, that sucked!
I get where she's coming from and all but Renee is developing quite a knack for irritating me whenever she talks to Elliot.

I hope you mean Renee, because Braun has only said one sentence so far.
Yeah my bad, it's hard for me to keep names straight sometimes.
I was just thinking of that scene.
