I can actually relate to the point of view that strip was made in, though. While I don't feel the same way he does, I do feel pretty much that way about electronic music.
Namely, the trouble is that sometimes things become mainstream and popular and all of a sudden it becomes possible to make bucketloads of money by making stuff that appeals to popular tastes.
The trouble is that popular tastes don't tend to have very much at all to do with my tastes. I'm no longer so arrogant as to declare It's Popular, Now It Sucks! because now I know it's more It's Popular Now It's Something I Don't Like.
In particular, my favourite genres of music are industrial, trance and acid house. The trouble is that the artists who were making really good industrial and trance music got bored of it eventually and moved on to do other things. If electronic music was still underground, there probably would have been new musicians coming along who would pick up where they left off. But that hasn't ended up happening because people are now more likely to listen to (and be influenced by) mainstream "epic" trance. So as a result my favourite genres of music are effectively on life support and I'm largely reduced to collecting past glories and hunting after previously unreleased material of largely dubious quality.
I mean, it's not compeltely bleak. Electroclash music is moving in directions that are quite appealing to me. But I can relate to the frustrating feeling of seeing a medium you love being carried in unappealing directions because it's run into popular acceptance.
Again with the data mining, dear Aunt?I used to love it, but ever since the Nerd Rage strip, I can't even read the old ones because I can pretty much still see him pulling the same crap in them, just a lot more subtle.
VG Cats is one of the comics I essentially grew out of — the subject matter, many of the characters, and the style of humor simply don't speak to me anymore. In retrospect, the Pantsman strips should have been a warning sign.
With his more recent strips he seems to have dived head-first into the casual gaming kerfuffle, which I despise, but to tell the truth he lost me long before then — this just confirms my opinion.

I will keep my soul in a place out of sight, Far off, where the pulse of it is not heard.I shouldn't like VG Cats. And yet I still do.
I suspect this is because my sense of humour is chronically peurile.
Again with the data mining, dear Aunt?Which was the "Nerd Rage" strip?
EDIT: It should be noted that Aerith is basically the fursona for Scott's Id. Anything that comes out of her mouth should be taken no more seriously than "This is how I feel when I'm having a bad day".

Again with the data mining, dear Aunt?Leo is also a piece of Scott, I think.
And I'd've more picked Aerith as his superego having its opinion heard, while Leo is the id. But it's been ages since I did Psychology (high school Psych at that, too) :/
Aerith is far too openly sociopathic (at least lately) to be a Superego.
I'd say Leo is probably more like Scott's inner child than anything else.
Again with the data mining, dear Aunt?Point taken.
I can safely say that "Nerd Rage" made me facepalm SOOOOOO hard. That said, I do like VG Cats' sense of humor, even if it does make me feel bad about it afterward...like the fetus strip.
360 Gamertag: Electivirus. 3DS friend code: 5412-9983-8497. PSN ID: Electivirus. PM me if you add me on any.I used to like VG Cats, and still do occasionally. But anymore, I'm so out of date with video games, I don't get any of the references.
Ecstasy is Sustained IntensityI used to like it, then it seemed to decay, then I looked back and realized with a start that it had always been like that, if maybe not so bad before. And yeah, Nerd Rage was pretty horrid.
Your funny quote here! (Maybe)Am I the only one to whom the "Nerd Rage" strip was NOT a shock?
I'm a weird case. I totally agree with what was said about the comic on "Your Webcomic Is Bad and You Should Feel Bad" and yet I still read and enjoy it.
Yes, there's nothing there but jeuvenille, peurile gags and over the top facial expressions. But I find that FUNNY!
Again with the data mining, dear Aunt?I didn't get "Nerd Rage". What was the joke?
Welcome To TV Tropes | How To Write An Example | Text-Formatting Rules | List Of Shows That Need Summary | TV Tropes Forum | Know The StaffThere was none. Scott was just pissed off and had a webcomic.
Again with the data mining, dear Aunt?"Hardcore gamers are superior". It's not much of a joke.
I will keep my soul in a place out of sight, Far off, where the pulse of it is not heard.Actually, one thing that I find quite amusing is how both Scott and The Game Overthinker are in support of staying true to old school gaming roots and yet Scott uses "hardcore gamer" as a banner to rally around while The Game Overthinker uses it as a term of derision.
Again with the data mining, dear Aunt? It's a good indicator of how ridiculous this debate is, but that debate exhausted its ability to amuse me a long time ago.
I will keep my soul in a place out of sight, Far off, where the pulse of it is not heard. The nerd rage one, for me, was "meh" up until the last panel. That actually made me laugh. I sort of just skimmed through Aerith's speech leading up to it.
I think I've liked only four or so strips from all of VG Cats. Oh well.
I've always found an unintended joke in that a comic deriding the influx of newer, clueless gamers that know nothing of what came before is being delivered by a character named after a Final Fantasy VII cast member.
Unironically.

On "hardcore gamers", am I right in assuming that when used as a derogatory term, it implies Serious Business and a fondness for Darker and Edgier games, while when used as a positive term it implies a high level of skill and an appreciation for games that are actually fun to play, not just to look at? The latter is how I'm used to the term being used offline, but the former is the usage I've mainly encountered online.
Welcome To TV Tropes | How To Write An Example | Text-Formatting Rules | List Of Shows That Need Summary | TV Tropes Forum | Know The StaffThat is my understanding of it, yes.
Again with the data mining, dear Aunt?
Discuss.
It's an entertaining comic (especially the one with the Star Fox quotes. The last panel cracks me up.) but it hasn't really been the same for me since the Nerd Rage strip. I hope it was a parody because that was basically the embodiment of No True Scotsman.
