In my neuropsychology class, my prof was talking about how highly magnetic MRIs are. You're not supposed to take anything metal within a certain radius of an MRI if it's on, or else this happens.

So, one thought that occurred to me - if you were being pursued by The Terminator in a hospital, and you ran into the MRI room and turned it on and got out of the way, would the Terminator end up stuck to the MRI?

If I'm asking for advice on a story idea, don't tell me it can't be done.

Depends on whether it's made out of ferrous metal or not. If it is, then you're good to go. If not, then there will not be any effect.

No, because James Cameron doesn't believe in magnetism.

The t-800 is made out of titanium apparently but it surely has some copper wiring somewhere within it and if not then any processing circuits are going to get screwed up by the eddy currents from moving through the field.

wasn't that sort of a plot device in terminator 3? sure, it was technically a particle accelerator or whatnot, but still a strong magnet.

Fine IC generally don't like strong magnetic fields. Such things should have critical modules shielded, but since there's no reason to suspect this all was done in right mind...

Of course, even if it's shielded, you still can kill it with a local pulse stronger than the saturation value, which really isn't that much. I.e. if it ran into trap made of a good coil wired to a few defibrillator caps, it would be all over in about several milliseconds. ;]

I'm pretty sure that if a terminator walked into an MRI field it'd get fried since magnetism + motion = electricity.

This depends on the velocity. No, movement is superfluous. The Hall effect is enough to mess up almost anything made of semiconductors and turned on.

I misread this as "Terminator needs MRI".
