When you read the book you can really see the difference in characterisation of Elves between it and LOTR.

[up]Do it!

Anyway, I'm wondering something. Anyone here familiar with rural Southwest Alaska? I need a beta reader to check the cultural accuracy of something I'm doing.

So I decided to try English-language opera. I started tonight with Doctor Atomic, because it was the most interesting-sounding one and because I couldn't renew it any more times.

It's an opera about the Manhattan Project, and specifically Dr. Oppenheimer. Act One is the last few weeks of development through rigging the final prototype on the test tower. Act Two is entirely the night leading up to the test firing.

It started strong, and while there's a lot of operatic material naturally in there, half the time it feels like they're just shoving artsy things in like it's not avant garde enough.

Right off the bat they made a statement that fundamentally changed my understanding of atomic warfare: "the atomic bomb represents so much portable firepower that entire cities could be destroyed overnight by an ostensibly friendly nation."

Before I only ever understood atomic bombs in an academic sense. The idea that a post-atomic world can be peacetime one day and holocaust aftermath the next makes me truly understand the horror faced by the Los Alamos scientists for what they were unleashing and for the Cold War era.

I found it years ago, I don't remember where. But it's a picture and quote from The Princess Bride.

^ Yay, Michael and Gavin! grin

My room has become 10000% more bright and cheerful now that my Homestuck Kickstarter-print has been pinned to the wall. I think I might get more posters; my walls are still very bare.

A woman came in and handed out brochures about grad school.

I kept telling myself that I do not want to go to grad school, and luckily for my present self there were very few degrees in that brochure that I cared for.

Unluckily for my future self though, I still don't have any rational idea for a job. -_-

Yeah. Got all the paperwork ready, got my territory and government. Just gotta pick a flag. Which is difficult, because I've got over 9000 candidates and it's mostly Touhou-fanart.
