The team was the Quebec Nordiques, based in Quebec City. In their last years, they were financially troubled, and the team was sold to a group in Denver, who relocated the team there for the 1995-1996 NHL season and renamed it the Colorado Avalanche. They turned around and won their first Stanley Cup championship at the end of that season.

The look of the team after the rename is probably better than what they were going to have had they not moved (also of note, they shared burgundy with their new sibling team, the Denver Nuggets of the NBA, though it was probably picked because it and steel blue were a variation on their colors in Quebec City).
