For whoever's interested, I just posted a review
of the first game in mah blog.
Short version: It was awesome and I can't wait to play more.
*Hops on over to Amazon to order the manga, anime and novels*

I wouldn't get excited over the 2nd game though. It's not as bad as the haters make it out to be, but it is obivously worse in some ways.
And if you thought the first game was hard, the thrid game's original version makes that seem like a cakewalk, to the point where they had to make a special edition that was easier.
Watch SymphogearThe "Special Edition" is the version of 3 that I've got. I'm honestly glad I have the easier version... as fun as that hellish nightmare was, I'm not eager to repeat it.
I'm trying to ignore the fandom as much as possible while I play the games. I'm aware that Devil May Cry 2 is the black sheep, but then, fans also hated Metal Gear Solid 2, which is reason enough to never listen to them.
I'm also seriously considering getting into the anime, manga and light novels, since they're all (except for the DMC 4 novelization) available in English (and I'm not interested in DMC 4 just yet).
visit my blog!I'd say go for Devil May Cry: The Animated Series and DMC4 first. The manga adaptations and light novels should preferably be left for last as they were kicked out of canon along with 2. And the manga that precedes 3 never was finished.
"Just wants a friend but had to give up his ding dong for it, tragic." - AngelLightStarAs a fan of MGS 2, I can say the problem with Devil May Cry 2 is much, much different. MGS 2 gets flack for starring a different character and the Mind Screw ending (two things I didn't mind, but bear with me). Other than that, the gameplay is very much an upgrade from the first game, just the way a sequel should be.
Devil May Cry 2 is more the fact it just doesn't play very well, in a way that's rather hard to articulate. The best way I can describe it is that it feels more like a third-party, budget-released clone that has a character that looks like Dante as the star.
Best description of Stinger in DMC 2:
Stinger LV. 0
ALL CREATURE WILL DIE AND ALL THE THINGS WILL BE BROKEN. THAT'S THE LAW OF SAMURAI.I wouldn't be so bad if Dante didn't run forward before actually unleashing it. That being said, it is good for crowd control.
"Just wants a friend but had to give up his ding dong for it, tragic." - AngelLightStarI'm up to Mission 4 now, and it does seem like the controls have gotten kind of awkward. One recurring problem I have is that Dante keeps changing targets whenever I try to do a combo, which always throws me off.
I can't really say there's much else to criticize, at least not yet.
Is 2 really non-canon, or did they just not address it by making 3 and 4 prequels? (I would think the issue would be moot at this point since the next game is a Continuity Reboot anyway)
visit my blog!I don't think Capcom has actually disowned it, but they seem reluctant to place it anywhere in the continuity or connect it with any other games. The best I remember them saying, is that it takes place after 4. There's also a Take That! against it in one of the Viewtiful Joe games.
I liked it, other than the water demon-thingy mission. I HATE that boss.
"If you aren't him, then you apparently got your brain from the same discount retailer, so..." - FighteerIt's mostly because the game was so widely disliked. For the record, 2 is the last game in the series and no other games have tried to come even remotely close to 2's timeframe. That's why 3 was a prequel to the first game (which is about as far from 2 as you can get) and 4 is set after 1 and TAS.
My spiel is that DMC2 is over-hated. It's not a terrible game, it's just subpar by DMC standards.

Huh. I never had that problem. Just a fun fact for you: there are different combos available if you're not locked on to enemies.
I'm presuming you're referring to Tateobesu and not Jokatgulm. Yeah, he was a bit tricky. Have you tried facing him in LMD? There, he's permanently invisible, meaning that, while you can see his outline, you can't lock-on to him. It doesn't help that underwater combat is awkward and unwieldy in general. It wasn't at that great in the first game, but it was just Dante swimming through areas in first person while equipped with a Needlegun that was pretty effective against enemies. At least he didn't have to fight enemies and a boss with slow-as-molasses, clunky slashes and at terrible camera angles.
Also, that was in the first game. In Dante's intro, he notes that Enzo must've stolen his clothes (Dante is only wearing underwear when not-Henshined), a rib about his sudden change in characterization in 2 and an implication that it wasn't Dante you were playing as in 2, not to mention that Alastor chews out Dante for not taking him to "Somwhere Island" (Dumary Island), which elicits a "I don't remember that!" from Dante.

"Just wants a friend but had to give up his ding dong for it, tragic." - AngelLightStarDMC 2 was one of the first action games I ever played. I don't think it was terrible I actually liked it and plyed regularly. The only real problems I have with it is the plot, which if forgettable seriously I can't remember it,and that the weapons are just slightly alters versions of eachother.

Now that you mention it, I hate both of those. Jokatgulm's battle was very tedious and annoying. Terrible chore. The frikkin' tentacles.
Compared to Trismagia and maybe Bolverk, those two are a walk in the park.
"Just wants a friend but had to give up his ding dong for it, tragic." - AngelLightStarBeat Dante's disc in 2. Working on Lucia right now (just got past the tentacle boss)
So... what do people hate about this game, again?

It's not the first game. Or as difficult as the first game. Oh, and Dante is a lot more stoic.
My opinion is that it's a good game on its own.
"If you aren't him, then you apparently got your brain from the same discount retailer, so..." - FighteerActually, the complaints that Dante has somehow changed are the most confusing. Yeah he doesn't tell any flockfaces to fly away this time, and he doesn't desire to fill anyone's dark soul with light, but most of his foes don't demonstrate that they even can understand language, so he just doesn't bother.
When Dante does speak... or do much of anything, really, he's perfectly in line with the Dante we loved in part one. Hell, this is a guy who gives the macguffin to the villain then immediately announces he's gonna kill said villain. And on top of that, he switched one of the macguffins.
Besides. He shoots down a helicopter. With handguns. HANDGUNS!
visit my blog!As someone who has completed Devil May Cry 2 multiple times, I feel that this video is a good analysis of what's right and wrong with the game
Also, I always regarded the helicopter fight as one of the worst Devil May Cry bosses due to the fact that you have to chip away at it's health with your handguns the whole time. The award for THE worst Devil May Cry boss goes to that invisible fish monster thing, though.

A bomb's a bad choice for close range combat.@ Moe Dantes: He acts more like DMC1!Dante when he speaks, but he's still too Vergil-like (not to mention that he deadpans nearly every line of his). Yes, his Fakin' MacGuffin Batman Gambit was pretty damn cool, and he does have his moments near/at endgame, but this is easily the most wooden Dante in the series. The back cover states that he has even more of a trash-talking attitude; I think that may have been a typo, considering how stoic and disaffected Dante is throughout the game. Anyway, DMC2 is a decent game on its own—I will not argue that—but it's pretty bleh by series standards.

When the DMC collection comes out, I will try out DMC 2. Maybe I'll find it not as bad as everyone says.
Side note: I have been planning on trying out Bayonetta to keep me occupied, but I am worried that I will be offended by it, what with me being a Christian and all. Will I?
That's one of the reasons I'm not even going to bother with it.
Let the joy of love give you an answer! Check out my book!Well, for whoever is interested, here's what I thought
of Devil May Cry 2. Short version is, I thought it made some unnecessary changes, but it wasn't bad.

Yep, sure does.
Complete with Surprisingly Good Japanese to boot.
