Dante has embraced his fucking Bugs bunny energy from DMC 4
fitting that its JYB
Saw the first two episodes. Really good. Scratches a gothic punk itch I’ve been having.
You’re Gonna Carry That Weight.Finished the show, my initial impressions:
- Oh boy, the adaptation really took creative liberties. One could say that its version of Lady swears more than El Donte from DmC: Devil May Cry. Didn't like it almost every time she opens her mouth.
- Disappointed by this show's version of Arkham. I didn't "get" his motivation compared to the White Rabbit. His minimal screentime and being relegated to a Posthumous Character doesn't help his case. I expected his "Jester" persona more, but what I got instead almost felt like a zombie from Resident Evil.
- Disappointed at most of the DARKCOM members. They look like they came from DC and Marvel Comics at first glance, have little characterization, and they get slaughtered quickly in one or two scenes. They're barely even "there" apart from some exposition dump and to make Lady look cooler in comparison.
- Disappointed at the apocalypse segment in the finale, it felt underutilized. AFAIK, the 2007 anime shows a better view of the "immediate" consequences of a massive portal to Hell appearing in the Human World.
- Some plot holes and Headscratchers I am currently thinking about, but may require re-watching, like "How did Force Edge end up in Vatican?".
- The fight scenes are way better than I expected in general, but the obvious 3D CGI demons and vehicles are jarring.
- Mixed on Lucia, it's very interesting that she appears right at the very first episode, but that's only where she appears in for a few seconds. And what she did is... spit on someone's face? Underutilized.
- Mixed on this adaptation's versions of Agni and Rudra. The way one of them became headless (like their original counterparts in DMC3) felt unceremonious. They do have some funny banter though and there's at least one reference to their origin game, but their Half-Breed Discrimination towards Dante is unexpected.
- Mixed on Cavaliere Angelo. He's depicted like a badass and a menace when it comes to sword fights and how he utilizes his wings, but he looked like a wimp when he struggles finding Lady inside the apartment.
- Mixed on Vergil's demon design. The original Nelo Angelo armor (and heck, even the Proto Angelo armor from DMC5) and his Devil Trigger forms all looked better IMO.
- The show does have several Mythology Gag, easter eggs and references towards the previous Devil May Cry installments and other Capcom franchises obviously, but there's also a plethora of Shout-Out or pop-culture references to other works, which does have a little bit of Fridge Brilliance on them if you think about how this adaptation handled Dante's personality; he's a pop-culture nerd In-Universe.
- Mixed on the soundtrack. Seems like they used 2000-era music for nostalgia bait, I get it, that veteran DMC fans who grew up with the series feel nostalgic upon hearing them, but I'm still on the camp that prefers the DMC music originated from the games more than "licensed music" from general pop culture. I don't think I even heard "Taste the Blood", "Divine Hate", nor "Seeds of Love". Heck, I was expecting the latter to play during the Eva flashbacks, but alas.
- Impressed on Echidna. She has more prominence here than the low bar set by her minimal plot relevance in DMC4.
- Impressed on Plasma. They managed to give enough characterization to a "mere mook" from DMC1. I recall some fan discussions and news articles also expressing curiosity on what his purpose in the story is. Turns out he isn't a meme, they really utilized his shapeshifting abilities in various ways.
- Impressed on the White Rabbit, especially because his English voice actor is great for the role, IMO. Gotta admit that I'll be rewatching the show in the other dubs (especially JP) for comparison.
- The moments after the final battle is cheesy. The show has politics in it, and you can already tell from Episode 1. But in Episode 8, humans invading Hell to spread American propaganda seems like a very odd choice (and may be ridiculous to watch if you're not American), but the song "American Idiot" suddenly playing in the background was a surprise.
- The final moments obviously set up a lot of Sequel Hook, and there's a pure fanservice moment right at the very end, involving a certain DMC character whose name starts with V.
- Dante doesn't feel ridiculously overpowered, unlike how the 2007 Madhouse anime depicted him, but I think that's good because it gives him a lot of room for improvement, assuming this Netflix adaptation does get more seasons. It also meant the fights won't be boring.
- Good 2D art style and facial expressions. I often pause the videos to look at the faces of the main characters, there are some interesting faces you can find and screenshot here and there.
- My favorite scene so far is Dante versus the mercenary group in Episode 2.
- Johnny Yong Bosch's performance as Dante grew up on me over time.
I'm mostly critical of this show because I looked at it from the lens of a veteran DMC fan; there's almost always something I can think about or "scrutinize" for comparison as I was watching it, which made me think about what were they doing with those creative choices... But it does have a lot of "fanservice" for those already familiar with DMC, plus several hype moments and action that the 2007 Madhouse anime didn't have. With Great Power, Comes Great Motivation
American Government heading to hell to spread American propaganda is actually on brand for America. I’d expect nothing less. I’d expect them to do the same to Heaven if they found out it was real and could access it too. They’ll likely end up as the settings version of the Order of the Sword as well.
American Idiot is a protest song critiquing America during the Iraq War for a reason!

Every accusation by the GOP is ALWAYS a confession.I tried to play the games before the show dropped. Couldn’t get past the final boss of the first game (Anyone have advice?).
You’re Gonna Carry That Weight.Skip it and just start with 3? It's the first chronologically anyway.
No offense to those that like DMC 1 it just hasn't aged super well. Some offense to those that like DMC 2, you deserve better so respect yourself.
Edit: sorry, I read that as "first boss" instead of final boss. My bad.

You have to shoot at Mundus while avoiding his attacks but the flying controls do get some getting use to. You have to shoot the rocks he sends at you and shoot the orbs he summoned to build up your devil trigger then activate it to launch an attack that takes of quite a bit of Mundus' health.

"May your heart be your guiding key"I'm currently halfway through the fifth episode, but had to stop. I'll say more (on the main thread for the series) once I'm done (even if that'll take a few days).
Finished the Netflix anime.
When it focused on just being about demon hunting, I liked it.
One Strip! One Strip!
I mean this show was being worked on for a long time. It was announced before 5 came out
If Devil May Cry 2 was so bad, then why did they make Devil May Cry 3? (because 2 was so fucking bad, Itsuno wanted to make another game in repentance. Ok, that's a slight exaggeration)

Netflix just tweeted a second season confirmation for the series: https://x.com/netflix/status/1910331989678338091?s=46&t=7YT7yMPCw2VMMwQUxWj5_A
I bought the HD collection myself even though I already own it on a different platform.
Actually that makes the third time I got the OG DMC since I still got my PS 2 copy.
You are not alone.By the way, I gave the new series an eye. Watched all episodes and I have a lot of mixed feelings about. To recap (spoiler alert ofc):
It's solid enough as a series in general, nothing too unique but it has its cool moments. As a DMC series, however, there is more to be said. While I don't necessarily hate the presence of politics there, I can definitely see why a fan may be turned off from this choice. I doubt that one plays Devil May Cry to hear about immigration, the War of Terror and topics like that, and the ham-fisted deliver of the message isn't helpful either. I am not one of these "Keep politics away from media!" types, but it's still a odd choice to connect that stuff to Devil May Cry of all things.
By the way, this series gives me a lot of 2000's vibes, primary because it includes politics from the Bush era and many songs from that period as well, and personally I like the music of that era, so I am willing to give the show that.
The demon slaying is pretty cool, even though those 3D designs on demons like Cavaliere Angelo are kind of janky. I personally liked Plasma the most as mook, and the White Rabbit was solid enough as Big Bad.
And about Dante and Lady (or Mary, to be more exact)? I actually don't mind them too much here. I don't necessarily hate this less powerful Dante, it's a different continuity after all, and maybe he will become more powerful later enough, it makes for more interesting fights for a TV series since it doesn't work the same as for videogames. I only wish he gets kidnapped less often, that's all. I don't mind too much Mary either. Heard that she swears a lot here, but honestly I was expecting worse. I watched it dubbed, does she drop f-bombs more often in the original version maybe? But I actually don't hate the changes for these two. Because it's a different continuity, as I said before.
In conclusion, I am giving the series a 6.5-7/10 around. Again, solid enough as a series in general, very mixed as a Devil May Cry series. Hopefully the next season will capture better the spirit of the games.

Curious on why the the Green Day track is hidden, is the track itself a spoiler or is it just another new song fir the show?
