Devil May Cry isn't going to win any awards for its writing, because that's never been its appeal. A lot of its writing relies in subtext and interpretation to an extent.
And even then, it goes without saying that Dante, Vergil, and Nero are the showstealers.
Trish and Lady don't really have much to do in 4 or 5.
A lazy millennial who's good at what he does. The girls basically suffer Girl of the Game syndrome
With their plot line resolved they don't have anything to do... but people will complain if they don't show up.
My problem with Lady is she and trish are have both descended into the Generic Badass girl who lounges around in supermodel poses. 'The tease scene at the end of 5'
I'm not saying Lady should forever be a ball of perpetual hate and rage but I wish they had kept her straight laced to the point personality to contrast with Dante's whimsical dead beat.
IE She's the PROFESSIONAL DEMON HUNTER
instead she's basically turning into the action girl who looks more and more like she's the porn parody of her character and giggles in unison with Trish. Cause at this point the two are almost interchangeable cept for one or two story beats.
Trish... Trish is such a mess to the point they have been trying to lowkey retcon what her position was to Mundus in the first game
Trish was the disposable honey trap who by all accounts was the weakest of Mundus' elite minions, 5 wants you to think she was his right had and 2nd in command.
_____
Arius and Argosax have the luxury of being simple 'Granted the truth its under developed cause 6 months but...' Yes they are basically Mundus split into two characters
sometimes Simple and to the point trumps Complex and Sanctus is a bad attempt at being complex
Then again 4's story falls apart the moment Dante takes over cause nothing happens other then Dante kills all the previous bosses while acting like a Doofus

This is an outrage against Luminara!I mean thats the simple answer...
But then you'd get people who'd complain that "You could have done something with them!"
Kyrie pretty much broke the trend of adding an action girl every new installment with Nico following suit
DMC kinda has the Dragon ball problem where it keeps characters around but doesn't know what to do with them
Unlike Future Trunks who never overstayed his welcome and was sent back to the future and was never seen again.

This is an outrage against Luminara! It has nothing to do with being a woman, so you can cut that out. It has more to do with, if a character has reached their natural endpoint and writers feel like they can't really add anything more to them, then it's easier for both fans and the series to just write them out.
It's kind of obvious the devs had no plans for Trish or Lady after their debuts, as they were focused on developing Nero as the new protagonist as well as his relationships with Dante and Vergil.
It just so happens these characters are women, but it's incredibly common for long running franchises.

A lazy millennial who's good at what he does.Frankly Lady works fine as a Cameo and a bonus character
The issue is they keep acting like Lady and Trish are important when they really aren't
like Trish is used completely for narrative convenience in 4... then again rushed the Back half of the game out so Dante's half of the story is just backtracking
Like I get that they wanted a global threat with Demon hunters everywhere involved but 5 just doesn't go all out enough for that.
This is an outrage against Luminara! It's like you said; if they were to demote Trish and/or Lady to cameos, then fans would likely complain about their absence. I mean shit, Vergil is a meme for this reason; what's the first question people ask whenever there's a new DMC "when Vergil"
Its telling that Vergil has been in every game since 3 in some capacity, he's just that synonymous with the series as much as Dante is.

A lazy millennial who's good at what he does.It has a pretty small cast to begin with, which doesn’t help when it comes to stuff like this.
It’s also got this weird split where almost all of the intermediate and supporting cast are women, and the most major characters are all men. Shaking that up a bit might help.
For the record, I still think rotating the cast or making character-specific spinoffs is the best option without factoring in any new characters that might be added. Problem with that is the slow release schedule (which would also make it hard to do something different in one game without people assuming it’s always going to be that way), but it’s still a possibility.

The cast just honestly happens to be extremely minimalist in what it needs; I don't think the shafting or Trish and Lady is intentional, but rather just a poor consequence of what the devs were planning.
So with that said, you can alleviate that by giving Trish and Lady their own sidequest separate from what Dante and co are doing.
A lazy millennial who's good at what he does.Even if it was a spinoff?
I’ve seen the kind of people you’re talking about, but given the newbie boom from 5, I’m not sure whether they’re enough to sink a game on their own. I know I’m not the only one who likes this idea. Besides, Lady in particular is still a fan-favorite, right?

Besides being used as shipping bait with Dante or Trish, I don't see much talk about her. She was way popular when she actually had a story arc in DMC 3 as opposed to just being eye candy in later games...
A lazy millennial who's good at what he does.Well. Yeah. Characters having something to do gives people more reason to talk about them.
A lot of people were hoping for that "ladies' night" DLC rumor to be a thing. I think there's some market for it, even if it's not as much of one as the main games. Maybe it'd be better to just consciously find a place for them in main games. A reason to be there and a subplot or new character arc for something to do. Doesn't have to be both at the same time, either - that'd probably help with the "feeling interchangeable" issue.
I guess what we're getting to is that it'd be nice for this to be addressed, but the question is how to do it.
Edited by SapphireBlue on Dec 8th 2020 at 5:55:31 AM
It all depends on how interested the devs are and if they can sell it to the audience.
the reason I say most people probably wouldn't be interested without Dante well....look at Nero; he was way more divisive in DMC 4 when people considered him inferior to Dante, and the story didn't help by basically reinforcing that by having Dante basically outshine Nero every step of the way.
5 did a wonderful job of letting Nero step out of his uncle and father's shadow into his own character.
So I think it would be hard to get people as attached to Lady or Trish unless they really went out of their way.
A lazy millennial who's good at what he does.

I think Sanctus convinced everyone around him that he had good intentions, but I really doubt he did. When the “well-intentioned” in your Well Intentioned Extremist is “become a god and rule the world,” you’re past the point of actual good intentions.
He’s just a delusional cult leader.
