The last part:

They noticed some mysterious person tailing them, followed him into an alley, talked a bit and he revealed that he just wants to join the party. Reluctantly, they agreed.

After that, they desided to go have a rest in some inconspicuous inn. There, the stairs broke under the party and Hilarity Ensued. Diplomatiker tried to get the party out of the cellar by creating new stairs... But the audience freaked out on magic, called cops, they got everybody into magic-blocking shackles. While en-route they got attacked...

And then you were online already grin

Fantastic. The one situation where an enormous intimidating figure could have resolved things, and I'm not there for it. Ah well.

I had to throw in that bit about the northern gate to justify why we'd leave through the northern gate from the eastern Rhegium. Forgot that bit until now.

How wide is this pass, that several hundred men can apprently cross it simultaneously?

The maths for this is slightly dizzying...

Lets say the pass is very large. Seven men can pass abreast. So say the party marches in double file, with the soldiers covering the flanks marching three abreast on the more vulnerable southern left side and two abreast on the mountainous right. The 1st and 3rd march in ranks of three behind and ahead respectively. The other units are spread out ahead and behind in ranks of seven.

Assuming each man takes up 3.5 square feet (about the space allowed for an airline seat.) its going to be a long column.

Wait, the Black Bludgeon probably takes up about the room of four men or something... or possibly that of a small catapult standing up... sad

Didn't think of that. And then there's Mongrel. Damn giant party members!

Thank you Flanker! grin

The pass can't be as narrow as Caradhras, otherwise the army would never be able to get through it. They'd be stretched out for miles and easy pickings to man and monster alike.

I thought that was the entire point of sending several hundred men along with us... I need to stop thinking in Imperial Guard terms.

I don't know, should te Black Bludgeon be at the front, to clear a path and absorb missiles, at the very rear to do the same, or stick with the squishy mages?

You might want to stick him in the centre with the party. Just because the vanguard and rearguard are being assailed by horrible, terrifying monster doesn't mean boulders won't get rolled down the slopes at you or something. On top of that, its a good idea in warfare to keep what is known as a reserve you can send to anywhere in a crisis. In this case, the central 1st 2nd and 3rd, all veteran units, and the party itself (including the diplomatiker, who counts as an entire Praetorian Guard unit all to herself) make a powerful reserve. The 1st is like the Veteran Sargeants of Warhammer 40K, only medieval and not superpowered.

Plus, the thing about vanguards and rearguards is they tend to get killed first. Best to keep anyone you don't want to lose quickly away from those zones. Though I'm sure the captains will appreciate the aid.

I play Total War a lot, which influences my love of big battles somewhat.

Shouldn't there be bigger uglier ones attacking in the middle while the front and rear are tied up?

Well there are steep slopes on either side, so they are guarded to some degree unless something can cling on to the steep sides... or shoot down from higher up. As the pass would have been designed specifically to avoid that sort of thing... and generally kept off limits... that isn't supposed to be allowed to happen. If it does however... if its a direct attack up the hill from the left flank, obviously the flankers are at a disadvantage anyway. If they attack from above with ranged attacks however... well, lets just say you're only dislodging such attackers with crossbows or something.

Or magic. There's nothing like a thunderbolt on a clear day to strike fear into foes. Or your allies, if you're not careful.

Well it involves a field battle to demonstrate how strong your allies are, followed by an easy battle to lull you into a false sense of security, and after that there's totally not a ridiculously difficult attack while the army is on bad ground from three sides, one of which is only assailable by crossbows, while outnumbered two to one. Followed by a battle on better ground which totally does not involve being outnumbered somewhere between five and ten to one.

We will have some awesome battle music however.

We get a peak in how Mongrel thinks as he analyzes the army. Yes, he puts that much thought into it.

So, what does Mongrel find out?
