[up] Thanks. Fixed the wording and came up with a better idea for the Element of Loyalty.

Jovial Fiend (BR)
Creature - Spirit
Hellbent - At the beginning of the end step, if a creature you controlled other than Jovial Fiend died this turn and you have no cards in hand, return Jovial Fiend from your graveyard to the battlefield.
2/1
You won't know whether to laugh or cry...for mercy.

Scorching Spit (R)
Sorcery
Scorching Spit deals 2 damage to target creature or player.
Hellbent - if Scorching Spit is in your graveyard and you have no cards in hand, Scorching Spit gains flashback 2RR.

Because Hellbent is cool but never got the support it needed.

EDIT: And yes, I know the flavour text on the first card is terribad.

Firebolt isn't half-bad, but do you really want to make a card that's worse?

Its flashback cost is less than Firebolt's...but only by one. Point taken. Make it an instant, then.

I think it's probably fair to leave it a sorcery (La Pille, I think, talked about why flashback instants are less fun a few weeks ago) and make the flashback cost 2R. You're going through a lot of trouble to get Hellbent, so I think it can afford to be pushed.

Burn is one of my favorite archetypes. Building yourself so that you get hellbent (and don't get utterly ruined in the process) still takes a lot of work. It's easy to run yourself out of cards, sure, but you will lose if you don't do it right.

Fecund Monstrosity (3BR}
Creature - Horror
Intimidate.
Hellbent - At the beginning of the end step, if you have no cards in hand, put a 2/2 black/red Spawn creature token onto the battlefield.
3/4

Sure, making a card that is really good in a weak archetype is often good enough as a restriction. Visions of Beyond isn't broken since mill tends to suck.

It's just the way you phrased it made it seem like the difficulty was something you met with when playing the game, not when building a decent deck.

The fact that hellbent is only natural for flashback, though, makes it a pretty small drawback. In general, a red deck doesn't want to spend four or five mana for two damage if it has things to cast.

I guess it is.

Splitting Headache (B)
Sorcery
Target player discards a card.
Hellbent - If you have no cards in hand, that player discards another card at random.
"Um...take two and call me in the morning. If you live, I mean."

Irrakka, the Rageborn {2RR}
Legendary Creature — Spirit Berserker
Haste
Hellbent — ~ gets +2/+2 as long as you have no cards in hand.
Bloodthirst 2
3/1
Born of fury and fire, Irrakka stormed through the plains leaving a trail of destruction in his wake. For what reason, no one knows.

Undisclosed Desires 1RR
Sorcery
Search your library for three cards with different names, reveal them, and then select one of them at random. Put that card into your hand and the rest into your graveyard.

Gaunt Pyromancer (1RR)
Creature - Human Wizard
Tap: Gaunt Pyromancer deals 1 damage to target creature or player.
Hellbent - Gaunt Pyromancer deals 2 damage to that creature or player instead if you have no cards in hand.

Thor, God of Thunder 7RW
Planeswalker - Thor
+2: Thor, God of Thunder deals 4 damage to target creature or player.
-2: Put two white 2/2 Goat Spirit creature tokens with flying and first strike into play.
-6: Destroy all creatures target player controls. Thor deals X damage to that player, where X is the number of creatures destroyed this way.

[up] Any specific type of creature token (spirits? goats?), or are they members of the Nameless Race?

Good catch. They were meant to be spirits (that is, Thunder Spirits)... But I think they'll be Goat Spirits. Thor's got to have his goats.

Have we done any cool things with the transform mechanic yet? I'm trying to think of how to "card" your typical Magical Girl with little success.

Still finishing: a whole lot of shows from Fall 2013 and Winter 2014.

A weenie creature that transforms when it blocks or becomes blocked by a high power (say, >3) creature? Then it transforms back at the end of the turn?

No, see, what happens is that when the transform trigger resolves, each player takes five turns without being able to play spells, activate abilities, or attack, then the card is transformed and the combat step proceeds.

Alternatively:

"Exile ~ with 3 time counters on it. It gains suspend.

When ~ enters the battlefield, if it did so from exile, transform it."

I don't know why I had this idea today but I did.

Grain W
(white) Basic Food
T: Add W or 2 to your mana pool.

Vegetable G
(green) Basic Food
T: Add G or 2 to your mana pool.

Fruit R
(red) Basic Food
T: Add R or 2 to your mana pool.

Dairy U
(blue) Basic Food
T: Add U or 2 to your mana pool.

Protein B
(black) Basic Food
T: Add B or 2 to your mana pool.

Fat 2
(colorless) Basic Food
For every Fat you control beyond the first, it deals 1 damage to you during your upkeep.
T: Add two mana of any color of your mana pool.\\

I would make Fat more expensive and stipulate that you can only pay for it using mana you got from basic foods.
