Now I Didnt Mean Actually DO It is in the lead, so it does seem the votes haven't stabilized yet.

Searching for plausible mechanisms. When I Said Get Rid Of Him is leading by 1, should we give it more time or go ahead and make this switch?
Mod fiat? Yeah. I mean... Don't know. Kinda would be good at this point, but I have the feeling that a mod would only be able to do one or two things to conclusively finish this matter; IMHO none of which would be promoting When I Said Get Rid Of Him, is too bad for it to get fiat (particularly the "relation to the trope is implied" part). I Didnt Mean Actually DO It, on the other hand, is better structured although it still misses the trope by a nail or two, but yeah it could work well if fiated. OTOH what the heck am I talking about, I'm sure there exists precedent already in the wiki that if a bad name wins the crowner it has to be promoted anyway.
Anyway... In the worst case we end up with "sorry, all of you try it next time, again". So yeah... at this point I'd be happy with fiat time.
I'm seriously wondering why didn't the simpler Will No One Rid Me Of This won the crowner to redefine the version of the quote to use here. IMHO it was a much cleaner candidate that avoided most of the important problems both the full quote and the original short name had...
Fanfic Recs orwellianretcon'd: cutlocked for committee or for Google?"fiat" isn't really the word I was thinking; only Fast Eddie has true fiat. And yes, "try again later" is a valid option.
And, well, I supported Will No One Rid Me Of This (with or without the X) but the original crowner voted it into the negatives. I really can't explain that other than people voting it down because it wasn't the full quote.
Well, now When I Said Get Rid Of Him is ahead by three.
Ok, for the record, as of the time of this post, the only two options with positive numbers at all were
- +7 (yeas:25 nays:18): When I Said Get Rid Of Him (roughly 1.4 to 1)
- +2 (yeas:17 nays:15): I Didnt Mean Actually DO It (roughly 1.1 to 1)
Neither are really a consensus — that should be at least 2 to 1.
I repeat my opinion that an almost perfect name, or at least far better than the positives around here, would have been achieved already if we had just fixed the quote.
↑Not if we are going to change to a worse name in the meanwhile .Because how long will that while will be?

Fanfic Recs orwellianretcon'd: cutlocked for committee or for Google?I disagree with Twilight; if I had known all the choices were going to be so bad I don't think I would've voted for a rename in the first place.
I really don't think we ought to just go ahead and take the least bad name; that really just doesn't fix the problem. None of the names we have currently are significantly less bad than Rid Me Of This Priest.
I also have a suspicion that the reason we can't find a good name for this trope is either because our definition is faulty or because it just isn't a trope.
EDIT: From the page it is most definitely a trope, so let's go with swimming for references.
How about I Wish The Goblins Would Take You?

Nope. That's one for being kidnapped by The Fair Folk. It's another common trope.
It's frustrating. We know this is a trope. We have a very clear definition of what it is. There's just no good name to sum things up. I don't even care about it being clever or concise at this point even. I'd settle for clear.
Reality is that, which when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. -Philip K. DickHonestly, I think we've run up against the wall of the English Language. We'd need a linguistics professor to find out what word/phrase would fit best at this point, and a lot of people probably wouldn't know the word/phrase anyways.
I gotta go with Twilightdusk. At this point, only When I Said Get Rid Of Him is in the positives with 6, with the next highest being at 0. If the vote doesn't change by Monday (which it probably will, mind you) then we should go ahead and start the changeover IMO. The fact is that everyone decided we needed to change the name. Obviously no one is happy with the choices, but at least we have one that's positive and has more than 5 votes for it.
@Black Humor: With When I Said Get Rid Of Him I can at least go "Huh?" when I see the title and then "Oh, I get it." when I read the description, rather than "How does this title make any sense?" after reading the description like I do now. Maybe we should change the name and lock the crowner, but leave this thread open, so people who have a "Eureka!" Moment and come up with a perfect title can propose it? Then we can do another vote for it.
Either that, or change the names and give it an immediate "Keep looking for a new title?" crowner.

^Not actually my favorite animal.
Crown Description:
The Definition that the name needs to fit is as follows: A person says something he does not mean literally; he does not mean for it to happen. Someone else hears the statement and interprets it as an order or request. The person who heard it acts on it, believing it to be the genuine desire of the speaker. This results in something the person who made the statement did not want or expect. Upon learning that the non-order was carried out, the person thought to have issued it is displeased.- The speaker does not
- have to be alone when he makes the statement,
- have to believe that no one heard him say it.
- His awareness of or lack of awareness of the person who heard him is irrelevant.
- The result does not have to be death or even serious harm.
- The relationship between the person speaking and the person acting is irrelevant.
- The statement does not have to be phrased as a rhetorical question.
- The statement does not have to be made in anger or frustration.

more people voted since the bumps. the two current leaders are tied at a net vote of 7, the rest are in the negatives.
