Almost done with Season 3. Good to see Gh'kar thumping Londo to a pulp. Vir's wife needs to be spaced. Dyed in the wool race supremacist.

No offense to South Africans (well, a little), but she definitely came across as an Apartheid supporter, and it's great.. I loved how cheerfully hammy she was. It would be out of place on another show — but Vir was so used to spending time on B5 where Narn enjoyed equal rights. Of course this would be alien to him.

Well, the actor who played him didn't nick-name his own character, "John 'Nuke'em' Sheridan" for nothing!

Now I'm picturing Sheridan deep-throating Delenn while flipping off the Centauri at the same time.

Oh hay, you guys watch this show too? Rewatched a bunch of the show getting it introduced to a friend of mine. Got him to the end of Season 4 and a couple of the movies before he had to move to another country (unrelated to marathonning four seasons of B5, I assure you). Been meaning to rewatch the 5th season, but the last time I tried to do that, I got hung up on just how uneven that season is.

Responding to a couple of thoughts from previous posts by way of inserting myself into the discussion:

Probably my most favorite character on the entire show is Vir, primarily for reasons of where he ends up and how he gets there. Of special note is how he answer's Morden's question.

Sheridan's snoopishness and his superiors' assumption that he is an obediant tin soldier. Sheridan is very professional and very good at what he does. You'll recall that he served on Mars during the oft-mentioned and never depicted round of rebellions that happen to intersect with most of the human military characters' Backstory. Yes, he is suspicious of authority, and yes, he tends to turn over rocks as a matter of course, and yes, his was noticed by his superiors, which is how he ended up on General Hague's unofficial white list. Presumably his superiors were like-minded to him to a degree, and shielded him from potential repercussions.

It's possible that there were other officers of similar temperment who instead served under the type of officer more likely to side with Clark, and were either corrected or reprimanded, never rising to the position Sheridan found himself in when he appears on the show.

Delenn is responsible for some pretty reprehensible stuff, but two things should be remembered: She realized what she had done and the wrongness of it, she took steps to correct it (she is responsible not only for the near genocide of mankind but also for stopping said genocide. More importantly: Most of the other characters have no idea of this.

Indeed. She's rather ashamed of it, and would rather not broadcast it... which is a rather nice flaw in what some (although not I) have described as a too perfect character. Heck, I seem to vaguely recall once reading some Word of God from JMS that she never even tells Sheridan!

Of course, she does have a nasty habit of keeping secrets from him. (Spoiler for anyone not yet at the end of Season 3: " Oh, hey, awesome that we're dating now. By the way, your dead wife might be alive.") At least that secret could vaguely be justified in her fear that him knowing could cause him to put himself into danger.

But the whole, " Hey, I nearly caused the genocide of your species, but I feel really bad about it," thing being kept secret is pure shame/vanity on her part. (That second one is a spoiler to people not mid-way through Season 4.)

I'm working my way through Season two again. Watched S1-4 in a binge at Uni. Have NEVER watched S5 or Crusader. I'm not sure I could cope with a lack of Ivonova. Or Iva-Nova as the I Sn person calls her ;)

I did initially think Sheridan was a Sue, but watching it has reminded me that he has flaws and breaks like everyone else in certain circumstances. Franklin is also the same, a well intentioned extremist at times, which fits with his doctorial stance. A shame Talia had to go. Not a great fan of Lyta.

I love Londo, appreciate Vir a lot more and really noticed G'Kar's progression from apparent weasel to warrior poet.

Also, who doesn't love Bester?

Nearly at the rebellion episode, I think. Really love how this show progresses. Remember looking for a Shadow Ship toy when I was younger and saw the show for the first time - had all the B5 micro machines. They had two Vorlon ships, but no Shadows. I should noticed that I was a bigger fan of the bad guys at that stage in my life because they had cooler looking vessels....

Season 5 is worth watching. The first half of the season may drag on a bit, but the later half is quite good and absolutely full of the feels. And if you are a fan of Ivonova, she is back for the finale (since it was filmed at the end of season four, and held back when season five got a last minute green light).

As for your question of who doesn't love Bester? Simple. Garabaldi. [lol]

Crusade had some good moments, but I suppose since it was cut short so soon, it can be skipped without feeling like you've lost out on too much. I'd recommend it as part of the full B5 experience, however, if you are a completionist.

Crusade is to me sort of like a Proto-Firefly in terms of experience, only without the Big Damn Movie continuation (IIRC, much of Crusade's plot got folded into the B5 trilogy novels.

I think it was more of a proto-SG-1. Galen's smarmy charm was, like, next-level stuff.

May give it a go. Just watched the Sebastian episode. I do like the dueling question idea.

"Who are you" versus "What do you want"?

And the Narn conflict... wow. Londo's face throughout the bombing then the council session. And G'Kar's poise.

Those two... bloody hell, I'm just sad Andreas Katsulas isn't with us anymore.

Re: Crusade's story being folded into novels. Um, not really. A few elements, maybe. But far from the whole story.

The Technomage Trilogy of novels contains a lot of Galen and general Technomage backstory originally intended for Crusade. And the Centauri trilogy mentions that the plague is cured, without giving details as to the specifics of how. But the plague being cured was something of a forgone conclusion that I believe Word of God had said would have happened sometime in early - mid season 2, and far from the main intended plot of the series which we only got tiny hints of before cancelation. (Kind of like how the mystery of why the Minbari surrendered at the Battle of the Line was a big driving mystery of Season One of B5, but that is answered pretty quickly in Season Two as the main plot kicked off.)

I've always thought it a huge shame that, once it became clear that Crusade wasn't going to continue, JMS didn't flesh out his notes a bit more and get some novelists to continue the story in that fashion. I'd really like to have more Crusade, to find out where that story would have gone! Instead, it has almost become like the neglected stepchild of the B5 universe — unloved, and made to go sit in a corner to wither away and die.

Yeah, so that was cheery, eh?

Um... Good morning, everyone! Isn't it a bright and beautiful day? May you all have a good one!

(That's better.)

They didn't really answer the Battle of the Line question until the third season, I think. Maybe the fourth. They just sort of forgot about it once Sinclair (who fought at the line) packed his bags and Sheridan (who did not) took his place.
