To be fair, Sonic has an "attitude" (which means he makes a mean face sometimes and is slightly conceited) and Eggman, Shadow and several minor characters have guns and stuff.
So no, I don't think Sonic is for more mature audiences than Mario, but I do think it's more prone to adopting a "Darker and Edgier" aesthetic on occasion in order to appear cool.
Welcome To TV Tropes | How To Write An Example | Text Formatting Rules | List Of Shows That Need Summary | TV Tropes Forum | Know The StaffCompetent writing helps. I personally thought Sonic Chronicles handled "Darker and Edgier" well, too.
Experience has taught me to investigate anything that glows.Mario tends to make things "darker" (starting to hate that word) via Nightmare Fuel, rather than making everything blatantly OMGEDGYTHEMES.
^ Also, yes.
Not Quite Batman
No! Tangent! I thought we were tight, bro! Why'd you get rid of the audiecnecs?
I guess this just means that TV Tropes isn't for mature audiecnecs. They just flat out aren't acceptable here.
"People are calling me stupid on the internet."Ah, Sonic Chronicles... now that was a fun game. Little easy for an RPG and a little short, but fun and entertaining nonetheless.
Now if only Bioware would get off their butts and give us that sequel, everything will be just smashing. I miss the good ol' days when Dr. Robotnik was a halfway-competent villain.
The Danse Macabre CodexI don't think either Sonic or Mario is for Mature audiences; they've had a game or two for Teen audiences, but most of their franchise appeals to the Everyone or Kids to Adults audiences.
It Just Bugs MeWell, yes he was, but that wasn't what I was getting at. I was referring to the old days when he didn't get usurped by whatever ancient evil he happens to be harnessing in the current game.
It's my fault for not elaborating on that point; my appologies.

I need to finish that game (and Unleashed). Sounds like I missed one of Sonic's better titles.

Respect the Red Right Hand
Sat AM and the Archie Comic definitely were, for a period of time.
Unlike Duke Nukem, I have no problems playing either Super Mario or Sonic around my four-year-old cousin, so no.
Now, both games have had somewhat dark moments:
Super Mario Galaxy: Bowser's plot to rule a galactic empire results in the entire universe being (temporarily)destroyed. Also, Rosalina's tragic backstory and Luma's sacrifice.
Super Paper Mario: The whole game. I mean, the Final Boss is a possessed Luigi, for cryin' out loud! And and all the main characters get killed off at one point.
Sonic Adventure 2: The story as a whole got pretty serious around the time everyone gets to the ARK. Prof. Gerald's speech recorded right before his execution surprised me.
However though, both series are primarily lighthearted affairs on the whole.
Eh, I guess Sonic's tried to go for the darker plots than Mario overall, so I guess if you count "dark" as "mature", I suppose. The spin-off media tended to tell more complicated storylines - aside from the insanity that was The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, the other spin-offs tended to tell more complicated storylines. Compare this to the very light-hearted and episodic Mario cartoons.
Regardless, Sonic's still aimed pretty squarely at the same audience as Mario.

If by "brilliant", you mean "embarrassing", then yeah. Best thread ever...
