@ post 126: What Gen emu do you use? Gens?
Fusion is better than Gens.
As for my thoughts on emulation itself:
- If you don't emulate, we don't have much to talk about.
- Though if you're unwilling to use it even for games that are otherwise completely inaccessible, you might want to refine your moral stances.
- If you do emulate, try your best to go out and buy the games and/or systems you like most.
I think this discussion has reached the point where the differences are so basic that further discussion is moot. We define things differently (very very differently). I imagine that neither of us are quite as entrenched as we have made ourselves sound because we both feel attacked.
We'll agree to disagree.
Scribblenauts is one of those games which while made for a console is really one that would work better on a PC operating system. All the text input would benefit greatly from keyboard input. Oh, I've tried it in a DS emulator, but I wouldn't buy it because the user interface isn't very well suited to text input, which the game relies on so heavily.
Accidental mistakes are forgivable, intentional ones are not.Ah, I agree with Glenn Magus wholeheartedly.
I'm going to report my status so far in Play Station 2 emulation. I am using the new 0.9.7 Beta of PCSX 2 and the G Sdx 9 plug-in. I am running a "quad core" AMD X2 Callisto, with no Core unlocked and no overclocking done, so it's only running at two cores and 3.113 GHz. 4 Gigabytes of DDR 3 RAM memory, and a simple HIS HD 4870 1GB plugged into a terrible old AM 3 motherboard with a PCI-E 1.0 slot, reducing my card's power by probably about %20. All on Windows 7 64-Bit Edition. With obvious plans to upgrade soon.
In Kingdom Hearts I am up to Hollow Bastion, and have suffered not a single problem but a tiny, barely noticeable framerate slowdown during the talking at Destiny Islands. In Disgaea, I am on chapter 4 with not a single problem to report. In Final Fantasy X, I am in the Calm lands, with a whopping 75+ hours already put into the game(I am a Bliztball Maniac). There are only a few errors, a couple of slowdowns in speech in various places, and not to a very noticeable degree. The beginning of the Mi'hen Highroad and Luca are slowed down, mostly in terms of music. And very, very rarely, the battle menu does not show up in the Thunder Plains, making you have to reset. Any graphical flaws are almost non-present. Such as tiny dots in text where there should be nothing, such as dots across the hp bars, showing that the hp cap can be pushed a few digits. And there are one or two 3D graphical blanks spots that aren't noticeable unless you look for them, so much so that they might have even been in the original game. And no other errors. It's very playable and even enjoyable Of a much better quality than if you were say, originally playing the game on an old SDTV. The graphics are vibrant and beautiful. They show the current limits(until there are better plug-ins), of the beautiful CG in the game. And actually does the same as the PS 1, shows how the 2D graphics have actually aged in comparison to the 3D graphics. You can tell a clear difference between the 2d and 3d areas because the 3D areas are very vibrant while the 2d areas are very pixelated(can be fixed with filters, I haven't. Still would likely leave some pixelation under any settings).
I have only gotten to the beginning save of Okami, but there are no errors so far. I have also only gotten to the first area with Tear before the journey to Kimlasca. But all so far is fine. Only in the Courtyard has there been a small, nigh unnoticeable framerate slowdown below 60. It's about on the level of the Kingdom Hearts slowdown, and even less than the Final Fantasy X slowdown. Star Ocean 3 is a bit more iffy, slowdowns are significant, both in talking, and in several areas. I have only made it to the first "sanctuary", and it's very playable, but I think that people, myself included, might get agitated by the amount of slowdown. It definitely benefits from turning on the speedhacks. But even they aren't enough to do away with the FPS loss altogether. As well, Odin Sphere suffers even more lag on this setup than in the original Play Station 2 hardware/software, much less eliminates the lag that the PS 2 suffers from when playing such a game.
Mushihimesama is another iffy one. A great game, and playable. But worse than the others in terms of FPS by far. The game is near constantly at 30 FPS if you play normally. The Speedhacks make a little bit of improvement, but only make it a bit more bearable. The only way to actually get an FPS close to the original on this setup, is to not shoot. The FPS is fairly normal and the music is not slowed down a few seconds after one shoots. But you're not really playing an STG if you don't shoot. If you want the game to be easier and have more time to think and react to your actions, and don't mind the loss of music quality, it's definitely a way to play Mushihimesama, though. I'm happy to at least be able to play it.
Klonoa 2 is nigh unplayable. Not only is there severe graphical glitches everywhere. Some objects are plain out of place and I gave up on the first level. And I love this game. So much so I suppose I hated to go on disgracing the title by playing it in this state. Tekken 5 has weird vertical black lines going across the screen. And significant enough slowdown to be game breaking. I'm looking forward to playing a great variety of other games in the future, sadly that pretty much the limit of what I have to offer for now. I just built the computer recently and haven't had much chance to try it out.
I'd like to see what my upgrades to an overclocked X6 Thuban, Crossfire X 6870 setup, would do to alleviate these problems. Either way, it's only going to get easier and more refined in the future, and it's amazing easily doable now. Parts will only get cheaper, and emulators and plug-ins will only get updated. A lot of people who don't have experience in Play Station 2 emulation paint is nigh undoable and requires a supercomputer, but these are the type of people who haven't updated their computers in a while and likely haven't even tried it. If you can run Crysis, you can run Play Station 2 games. It's really not that bad. Certainly not as "crazy tier" as everyone makes it out to be. In fact, I think if you asked someone on an Asus Ares page, whether it would be "helpful" to buy one of them for Play Station 2 emulation, they would laugh at you and say it's way overpowered and a glorious waste of money for the task. And of course as well as the other high end 5000 series Graphics Cards, such as the Sapphire Toxic.

Genkidama for Japan, even if you don't have money, you can help![1]I've got a question about Sega Saturn emulation: Can I make the Satourne emulator work on my PC?
AMD Athlon 2800+ 1GB RAM Geforce 6800 GTS 256MB VRAM
I tried it with Saturn Bomberman, but it only goes so far as the title screen (of the console), and I can't start the game itself. So far it's not because of my computer specs, since I can't even start the game.
I'm using Daemon Tools, and the emulator displays the name of the game inserted, but I can't make it work. Anyone has any experience with Satourne here?
"We have done the impossible and that makes us mighty." - Malcolm Reynolds"Get back on topic. This thread is about Emulation, NOT piracy. If you want to discuss piracy, take it to another thread."
Well in the defense of posters, the two do go fairly hand in hand. I had answered the question for pirating. For emulation, basically I'm willing to emulate any game I'm willing to pirate, ie, games that I dont have easy acess too and aren't new. If I own it, Ill usually play it on the system if I can, though emulation opens up other options like undubs and translation patches (which are usually for games I don't own). I do wish I could figure out how to get a psx undub working on my ps2. I know it can be done fairly easily for ps2 ones (i'd love to get my hands on one for Tales of Legendia and such) but I don't know what to do for the psx ones besides playing on an emulator.
I plan on getting a swap magic, so I have little use for PS 2 emulation, but it would be nice just to try out the Japanese Tales games before I get that swapmagic. Unfortunately my graphics card is too weak for it...the emulator wouldn't even let me attempt it.

Taking a break from FE1, for the FE8 draft instead@138: Well, that hardware is certainly enough to emulate a Playstation, so I'd guess it's probably enough for other consoles of the same generation.
I think your problem lies in the emulator lacking certain compatibility aspects which the game requires. See if there's a newer build available. Often newer builds of emulators manage to fix just enough bugs to get software which previously didn't work to run.
Accidental mistakes are forgivable, intentional ones are not.@Roxor: Yes, ePSXe runs great, with no problems.
And that's why I asked specifically about Satourne. Still waiting for the answer. Is it normal that the console title screen appears? How do I start the game?
(Read most of the Satourne FA Qs/threads, didn't help, so I'm looking for someone with experience...
)

"We have done the impossible and that makes us mighty." - Malcolm ReynoldsI emulate NES, SNES, GB, GBA, DS and PSX games. I'm not gonna go out of my way and buy it if its there for free, though there are some games I'd rather play on a console(I want the FFVI GBA version, but it's rare)...
If I could emulate PS 2 games I would, if I could mod my Wii and PS 3 to play pirated games I would.... buuut I can't
Ah, I forgot about the Sega Saturn when I'd said I'd never had any problems with any Sega emulation! I've never even tried Sega Saturn emulation. But I hear it's a terrible juggernaut to emulate. The hardware is very difficult to work with. It was a good idea at the time, making it more powerful, much like how we use Dual Cores and Quad Cores in computers and up now, but it sure made for a mess to program then, and even harder to emulate now.
I haven't tried it, but I would assume, the more power, the better. Sega Saturn emulation software is not even close to mastered. And this is saying something, considering that even Play Station emulation has a long road ahead to catch up to 16-Bit emulation.
A lot of Sega Saturn titles that have been re-released. But I can definitely see there being some advantages in Sega Saturn emulation. Such as the Castlevania exclusive that still haven't been ported. Especially if it's easier than Play Station 2 on the computer.
I need to check out this emulation in the future. There's a lot of exclusives I'd like to play for the system. Such as even a Sailor Moon game I've been drooling over for years. I'm sorry that I can't help you as of the moment, but I should be able to have a better idea in the future. I do think overall, your system is probably too weak. Just from an offhand guess. I'm sorry to say. Even for Play Station 1 emulation, I had a similar setup, that had trouble with some games on Pete's D 3 D plug-in(that being the best option for most games. Pete's Soft Plug-in extremely cheapens graphics, though some people don't mind it).
I'm probably incorrect, though. I did have a weaker graphics card than you. I did though, have more RAM. Graphics Cards are more important than RAM, so I'm probably wrong. A good graphics card will make up for a lot of CPU Processing Power and RAM memory. The Sega Saturn is a different story, however. I don't think anyone out there is having an easy time with the Sega Saturn. Then again, people were saying similar things about the Play Station 2, which isn't that hard.
Genkidama for Japan, even if you don't have money, you can help![1]I'm not in support of it, but that's mainly for the joy that comes from angering my fan boy friends when they get annoying. I was considering emulating Kirby's Dreamland 2, but that would then make me a hypocrite and then I found it. It was practically free, and it works! *dances*
No, not going to emulate, Ebay and the video store are legal and less likely to be junk. Though it would be nice if Nintendo hurried up and made a virtual console for gameboy games so Cider the gaming public could experience Metroid 2.

Modified Ura-nage, Torture Rack

^^ I have not. =d
