For the most part, I'd like to see the console makers and other legit software developers take the lead in providing a way for new gamers to play older games. At least one ideal situation already exists for me: for five bucks, I can get one of many classic NES games on the Wii's virtual console that have zero chance of incompatibility and won't be malicious software in disguise. I'm more than willing to pay Nintendo for that convenience.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with it and without it the vast majority of old and obscure games would be lost forever. There are even less obscure games like Mega Man 2 and Super Mario Bros. that have become so iconic they should probably be in the public domain. Even on newer systems, if I emulate a Wii or DS game that's a great way to see if the game is worth buying beforehand.

Until this generation, when re-releases of classic games were few and far between, I saw nothing wrong with opening an avenue for gamers to play classic titles that they couldn't pay for legitimately regardless of emulation.

Now that such an avenue exists legally, I'm leaning against the idea.

I'm in favor of emulating general abandonware. Virtual Console is a major step in the right direction, though its selection leaves a lot to be desired.

I used to emulate a lot, but once i heard first word on the Virtual Console i pulled up my entire library and hit "Delete".

I still use it for some games that didn't and/or won't make it over, like Langrisser (Fan translation patches i love you!) but for the most part i find them obsolete on the basis of now being justifiably illegal.

If a game is so old that a company is no longer getting money for it, fine. Sure, go ahead. But if it's a newer game, it's just... stupid. The company's not getting money if you get the game for free, and if enough people emulate the game instead of buying it, the company doesn't get money. And for small companies, like Fifth Cell, this would be devastating. People don't seem to get that when they get something for free eventually there will be no one left to make the stuff they're getting.

I'm pretty much the same. Obscure gamesthat are unavailable without massive price hikes, fine. Things easily available for five dolloars on VC, or other services...no.

I've done it for games where I couldn't even figure out who would still be selling it (e.g. Uninvited, which has gone through several rights-holders), but I don't think I'd do it for a newer game like Mother 3, so long as there's some hope of acquiring it legally.

I love emulation. Love it. It rocks. The Virtual Console argument doesn't work for me because I have no Wii (and it wouldn't get internet even if I had one). So bring on the emulators!

I'm in support of emulation for the rare games, games that are not out in America and has little to no hope of coming out or ancient dos games.

Pirating recent games from portable consoles or homebrew stuff = no.

Using it to play rare/overpriced/import-only retro games = perfectly fine.

The Virtual Console would be a good idea if the selection wasn't so stupidly limited outside of Japan and ifNintendo weren't complete cunts.

Actually, homebrew should be perfectly fine. You aren't exactly stealing from the developers...

I am perfectly fine with emulation as long as I own the actual game, or if acquiring the game would not produce any profit for the developer/publisher.

I think emulation is alright whern there is legitimately no way to get the game.

.. or if I feel like I can't get it.

I also think that fan-retranslations or bug fixes in older games are good, like that one for Chrono Trigger, though I ditched my copy of the rom when the DS remake came out.

And if you're away from games you own legitimately, you can always have a copy on your computer, and that's not even illegal.

However, I am against emulation of games that there's a current active market for. DS emulators, for one, I don't get. The system is still alive, people. Why are you making emulators of the DS?

Yeah, I don't like DS emulators, they run too slow, touch screen is a pain, and savestates don't work.

If it's out of print or I already legally own a copy and want to a Let's Play, it's okay. If the game is available to be bought on the market (from the actual producers, not from ebay), then I will go get it from there.

I don't mind them on older consoles; it's often the only way I can play a given game anymore without spending a ton of money that won't even go to the developers. It also lets me play games I'm slightly interested in but wouldn't actually buy; if it surprises me enough with its quality, I'll buy it if I still can.

Otherwise I dislike how brand new games are pirated often before the actual game is released. It especially hurts smaller developers, which tend to stay away from the typical, tired genres and series the bigger names almost exclusively stick to, so I like having them around. Every pirated purchase hurts their ability to thrive in the market.

I am of the belief that if you can buy it you should. So long as the companies are getting money of course. I mean if the games been out for years and years then...go emulate it. Paying ungodly amounts of money for an obscure retro RPG or something just doesn't...make sense to me. But if that's what you like to do go ahead. Sure. I don't mind when people emulate foreign games either. I do still prefer that they buy an original copy of the thing though.

^I totally second that notion.

If the game is on an older console (for home consoles I'd stop at fifth generation; for handhelds, sixth) and the game isn't legally available on another download platform (Virtual Console or PSN), I'm for it. If it's a newer console, I'm for it if: the game isn't likely to come outside of its home country (examples: Persona 2: Innocent Sin or Fatal Frame IV); the game is out of print and hasn't been ported again (examples: Suikoden 3 or God Hand); or if there's a new version with desirable added features that will NEVER come out of its home country (I'm looking straight at you, Square Enix, for forcing me to emulate Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix Plus!)

With that said, I think uploading a game on the interwebs immediately after you get it is absolutely wrong. The team behind a game worked really, really hard on it...and don't even get me started on the localization process. It's so hard to translate a game into a new language. Plenty of proof for this. So I at least rent a game if I want to try it out. Otherwise, I buy it (new, if possible, but that's a different story.)

If it's possible, I'll try to buy my own copies of the games I want to support the people making and marketing it. I'm always willing to spend some time out and about, looking for a copy, online and offline, if it's available in PAL format.

Ye olde games, that have NO CHANCE OF GETTING (especially JP/US-only games, grrr...), however, I'll suck it up and emulate to try it out. Which is how I get to play most of my SNES games, a few GBA ones and Phantasy Star 2-4.
