I don't think moral superiority or maturity has anything to do with it, it's George Takei proving that gay people can be awesome and having fun while doing so.
Look at it this way. If I tell you that I hate you, would you be justified/sympathetic in snarking back?

And yes, I think he's totally justified. Calling a grown man a douchebag is waaaaaaaaaaaaay more forgivable than telling or implying young people that they should kill themselves.
