Urabe's voice fits her.

...a little brother should belong to his older sister, right? - Orimura ChifuyuI think Ever9 wanted a more cutesy voice for Urabe, don't ya think? Goddamnit, why they didn't cast Saber or Senjougahara as Urabe, then?

Nah, those are too strong. Something along the lines of what a typical Rei Ayanami Expy would get, would make more sense. Those have the mysterious tone by being quiet and monotone, but still sound like the cartoon characters that they are.
Well, that sort of character archetype has been pretty much overused.
But still, creepy voice is creepy.

I originally dropped this mid-episode because I couldn't get over the premise, but this here blog post
convinced me otherwise.

That's the wrong pothole here. I'm not complaining that ordinary seiyuu are realistic, and this one is "unrealistic" because I got used to those.
I'm perfectly aware that it is realistic, and that's exactly the problem, because I don't want anime characters to sound realistic.
It's like if Darth Vader would have the voice of an ordinary dude
. Would that be more realistic? Yes. But it would also distract from the immersion of his otherwise cartoonish character.

It's the same thing. He didn't sound menacing enough, because he was some Scottish dude talking out of a stylized Cool Helmet, and not an equally stylized evil robot voice.
Likewise, Urabe doesn't sound like herself, if she is supposed to be an Strange Girl in Anime, but whenever she opens her mouth, the voice of an ordinary dorama character comes out instead.

Great voice actor for Urabe, and it works.
The art-style seems to be deliberately archaic. It looks like a 90's anime in man ways.
