Great voice actor for Urabe, and it works.

The art-style seems to be deliberately archaic. It looks like a 90's anime in man ways.

Yep, I like the art style.

As for the story... I've heard about it before, but damn. Interesting, gonna keep watching, while nurturing this feeling of WTH inside me.

[up][up][up] Actually, Urabe's VA IS a Live Action actress.

As weird as the show is, I think the combination of the art style and soundtrack really work well together.

Urabe's voice fits her.

Urabe is an anime character. Her voice is way too realistic for an anime character.

And yet she claims to be completely normal.

  • Hears voices
  • Addictive, possibly hallucinogenic saliva
    • Saliva also appears to be able to convey emotions and thoughts
  • Produces an inhuman amount of saliva when excited

<_<

*Doesn't buy it*

[up][up][up][up] No, that makes her annoyingly nonsensical. Like if she would have a male voice. Or if she alone would be speaking in english. Or if she would be talking off lip-synch.

I think Ever9 wanted a more cutesy voice for Urabe, don't ya think? Goddamnit, why they didn't cast Saber or Senjougahara as Urabe, then?

[up]Nah, those are too strong. Something along the lines of what a typical Rei Ayanami Expy would get, would make more sense. Those have the mysterious tone by being quiet and monotone, but still sound like the cartoon characters that they are.

Well, that sort of character archetype has been pretty much overused.

But still, creepy voice is creepy.

I'm not saying that she should *BE* a Rei, of course they could keep the laughing scenes, and all her non-stoic actions, just that she should have the vocal chords of one.

Or really, any other anime character's.

Oh well, whatever. Yoshitani-san is still new to the seiyuu industry, so I say cut her some slack. Sure, there are a lot of stories about new seiyuus hitting it right off the bat, but they're kind of exceptions to me rather than the norm.

Yeah, I'm not personally hating on her, just saying that her acting is not particularly praiseworthy here, as most people seemed to interpret it.

I'd disagree ever9, her non-cartoony voice, while expressing her lack of experience, is a good fit for Urabe, it makes her stand out more as out of touch with her surroundings.

I originally dropped this mid-episode because I couldn't get over the premise, but this here blog post convinced me otherwise.

[up][up][up][up] That's the wrong pothole here. I'm not complaining that ordinary seiyuu are realistic, and this one is "unrealistic" because I got used to those.

I'm perfectly aware that it is realistic, and that's exactly the problem, because I don't want anime characters to sound realistic.

It's like if Darth Vader would have the voice of an ordinary dude. Would that be more realistic? Yes. But it would also distract from the immersion of his otherwise cartoonish character.

AHAHAHAHAHAHHAHA OH WOW. The problem with vader was that he was supposed to sound menacing, and the actor's voice was not menacing enough. Realism had nothing to do with it.

Ever9 from Europe Since: Jul, 2011
#249: Apr 10th 2012 at 11:36:52 AM

It's the same thing. He didn't sound menacing enough, because he was some Scottish dude talking out of a stylized Cool Helmet, and not an equally stylized evil robot voice.

Likewise, Urabe doesn't sound like herself, if she is supposed to be an Strange Girl in Anime, but whenever she opens her mouth, the voice of an ordinary dorama character comes out instead.

Urabe doesn't sound like herself

Wait what? You can say she doesn't sound like she is supposed to in your head, but to make this statement seems to speak more of entitlement than anything else.
