Fuck Pikmin 1 Male Sheargrubs. Me and my homies hate Pikmin 1 Sheargrubs.

"Just don't swarm them."

Half a dozen of them pop out of the ground at once and they have Shearwigs as backup, it's bullshit!

"It's your first time, just do a normal playthrough. Stop trying to do deathless."

HOW THE HELL DID THAT WOLLYWOG GET OFF THE GROUND WITH 50 PIKMIN ON HIM!?
WHY CAN MY PIKMIN ACCIDENTALLY FALL INTO THE VOID!?
Hey, I haven't rewatched Chugga's LP in a while, so what do the spores of the Puffstool— SDOIGNASDG;IASNASC!

I legitimately didn't remember. I thought it was just insta-death and actually started screaming when half my Pikmin pulled a Face–Heel Turn and started swarming Olimar.

Personally, I was aware of the Puffstool's ability. I was however not aware of what the windup to the attack looked like, or aware of how dangerous the spored Pikmin were to Olimar directly, or aware of how to change them back, so it was still a very rough time.

Oh, speaking of rough boss fights in the Forest Navel, remember to bring yellows to fight the Beady Long Legs. I brought a squad of all reds because I thought "it's a boss fight, you want the high damage Pikmin for that", but no, you don't want the Pikmin that deal higher damage, you want the Pikmin that deal damage higher up.

[up][up]Being able to Goomba Stomp smaller enemies starting in Pikmin 2 was a definite improvement. Shearwigs became less obnoxious as a result.

[up]The main problem with Pikmin 1 male sheargrubs is that they are bugged and can't take damage while they're grabbing Pikmin. They're effectively an instakill hazard because once a Pikmin has been caught it has zero chance of surviving.

Did they fix that in the Switch bundle?

I remember when I first played Pikmin all the way back in Elementary School. The Puffstool is the first thing I've seen KO Olimar.

Pretty spooky experience, especially since I hadn't hit zero hit points in the game yet and didn't know what would happen (hey, not dying is easy).

Perhaps it was a bit silly of me in hindsight (though I guess I was just a kid), but I initially assumed Olimar would just perma-die if he dropped to zero hit points. Vaguely, my reasoning was that the game has that 30-day time limit and heavily implies Olimar faces perma-death at the end of it. Thus, perma-death was on the table, and not-dying was pretty easy.

It was quite a relief when he was teleported safely to his ship.

Actually, on that note, a big part of what I like about the first Pikmin, particularly in contrast to later games, is a sense of bleak isolation.

Sure, it's a cute game with plant people, but you can feel Olimar's desperation. He's stranded, essentially by himself, on an unfamiliar world that is indifferent and hostile to him. He's living on borrowed time, and if he dies, nobody will even know what happened to him. His only hope is to learn about the world and how to use what's available to him to rebuild his ship.

The fact that the game's aesthetic is so whimsical actually enhances it IMO. Basically, it emphasizes the ironic contrast of nature's beauty and nature's cruelty.

I wish the Puffstool would come back. Mushmin were an interesting concept and I'd like to see them expanded on in some way

I haven't tried the demo, I'm waiting for the full release, but I have two concerns about Pikmin 4 I may as well ask:

  • Is the dog as overcentralizing as the trailers have suggested? I've been worried it will distract too much from the Pikmin themselves and basically be the main gameplay mechanic.
  • Are you locked into that low, almost-horizontal camera angle, or can you go for a more classic three-quarter angle like in previous games?

@Anomalocaris 20 I haven't played the demo either. However, according to someone else (Arlo, I believe?):

The dog can do a lot of what pikmin can do, though not to the extent that he can fully replace them. However, according to Arlo, he's a lot easier to accept when you realize he's actually more like a second captain ala Louie.

I think the interesting distinction Oatchi has is that there are merits to both keeping him in your own squad and to splitting up and using him to control a second squad. He's either Super Pikmin or a second captain depending on how you use him. I wouldn't say he distracts from the Pikmin, the core of the game is still managing which Pikmin you assign to different tasks, and Oatchi is just one piece of your team.

The camera controls like a pretty typical third person game. You can angle it so that it's top down, but I never tried playing through the whole level that way.

The fact that he can take a group of Pikmin with him was a nice surprise.

Since it didn't seem like that would be the case from the trailer.

I'm pretty sure that a fully maxed out Oatchi is going to break the game. Of course that is only going to happen at the end of the game so it doesn't seem like it will be that bad.

Did they fix the crushing glitch from the first game or is it left intact?

According to the Pikmin wiki, "The infamous crushing glitch is now rarer." (emphasis added), and that is the only noticeable gameplay change.

Stuck to doing a deathless, semi-blind run of Pikmin 1. Beat the game in 19 days. Probably could have done 18 days, but the thought of resetting and having to re-create the path every time Emperor Bulblax manages to eat a Yellow wasn't appealing. Ironically, I nearly won on the first attempt, but mis-timed the final bomb throw. (Then it took me several more attempts because sometimes the Yellow would just stand there and stare instead of throwing the bomb.) Could easily cut my time down in half in a future playthrough, now that I know where everything is.

I did fight and defeat the Smoky Progg, but had to scrap that day due to failing to swarm a Yellow Wollwog properly and losing some Pikmin as a result.

I am still pleasantly surprised that the Smoky Progg managed to get a Spirit in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

On another subject, I'm kind of curious on what the final boss of Pikmin 4 will be like. I'm assuming that Oatchi will probably play a major role in beating it.

My theory is it'll be Moss (or the parasitic Pikmin infecting it) is the true mastermind behind what's happened to Olimar, and will grow to Bulblax-like size for the final boss.

Honestly I'm partly expecting the final boss of Pikmin 4 to be what has been causing the ships to always crash land on the planet. It feels weird that they specifically bring attention to how strange it is to have crash landings twice in a row.

Also anyone else curious as to how humanity went extinct. Like we've always guessed that it was nuclear armageddon and that humanity wiped itself out but more and more it feels like humanity didn't destroy themselves, they were taken away.

Before Pikmin 4, I would've said no: it's so far into the future that how humanity went out doesn't really affect anything. All that matters is humanity is gone and nature has fully reclaimed the planet (as best as it could, anyway). Pikmin 4 having us explore houses that are in peak condition, though? Suspicious as hell.

Emperor Bulblax, Titan Dweevil, and Plasm Wraith are all such different but great concepts for Pikmin final bosses, I couldn't even guess what sort of creature they'll go with this time. And apparently the whole Piklopedia was datamined, so I kind of don't want to even speculate lest that prompt some jackass to come in say "Oh well funny you should say that nudge nudge wink wink" in response to someone's idea.

I am curious how they'll approach the tradition of making a Final-Exam Boss, what with the three type limit. Candypop buds and wild pikmin in caves do ignore this limit, so maybe that's what they'll go with? Just a cave with a ton of candypop buds in the leadup to the final boss.

Actually speaking of Pikmin limits I've been thinking of how the different Pikmin games limited you're Pikmin army in different ways. In Pikmin 1 and 3 the total size of your army is limited by the fact that growing Pikmin takes time and time is not free. In Pikmin 2 time is free, so you can spend days purely building up your Pikmin numbers, but the caves, where most of the treasure and all of the upgrades are, are endurance challenges, so your Pikmin army when fighting the boss is limited to whoever survived that long.

To give an example, I mentioned I fought the Beady Long Legs with a squad of reds because I didn't realize yellows were best for it, but I probably didn't even have 100 yellows at the time I fought it, because I hadn't had that much time to grow yellows. When I fought it's heavily armed cousin, the Man-At-Legs in Pikmin 2, I think I only had 40 something Pikmin in my squad, because the Subterranean Complex was terribly unkind to me.

In Pikmin 4 it looks like the main limitation is the need to collect Onion upgrades. Both the Flarlics and the way that discovering a new Pikmin type does not inherently give you that types Onion. This makes you weaker in the beginning since collecting every Onion in the Sun-Speckled Terrace still only lets you take out 40 Pikmin, which is less than what you'd likely have already by the end of even your first day in the Forest of Hope, but it's probably going to make you feel even stronger by the end of the game.

I've only played Pikmin 1, and I always had a lower number of Yellow Pikmin compared to Red and Blue. I guess that's why they gave them an electricity immunity in 2, to give you more incentive to grow more.

Until I get explicit confirmation on one thing or another, I'm just assuming that the game takes place in its own continuity until the game reveals more details.

By the way, the Nintendo YouTube channel posted a new Pikmin 4 overview trailer for first-time players, introducing what Pikmin can do and the abilities of the main three Pikmin colors. It doesn't really have any new information, but it's still a nice primer for anyone who hasn't played a Pikmin game before.
