Hey, everyone. I just got into Pikmin with a demo of the 3rd game.
After playing through the game a little bit, I wondered why the Pikmin would follow people like Olimar and Alph in the first place after, and then I noticed how I would always go after enemies and take them back to the Onion.
Even if I'm not in dire need of numbers, I'm always instinctively going after enemies and those pill things in order to increase my reserves in case something happens (and a bunch of other people are probably doing the same thing when they aren't in a rush or don't know what move to make next in their spare time). I guess Pikmin don't have much reason to not follow a guy/girl with a glowing antennae if it means they're going to go out of their way to increase their numbers regardless. They'll want to increase their numbers anyway if they want more workers that can get them more treasure and food.
The captains are good leaders. On their own Pikmin probably aren't as coordinated or diligent. They COULD live without them, but they wouldn't increase in population as fast.
The captains are pretty effective at managing the Pikmin like you said (they have to be or we wouldn't get a Pikmin 3 or 4). Of course, there's probably a chance that the Onions have that 100 field limit imposed as a failsafe against the more unreliable captains. If the captain can't make it with the 100 they get at a time, they would probably die anyway, so the limit is imposed to minimize losses thanks to a bad or new captain (and to keep frame rates from chugging).
I don't think the limit has anything to do with the onions. I think it's just a gameplay mechanic.
There could probably be a 1000 Pikmin in any tight space at once, but they keep it down to 100 for the sake of the game.
Gameplay and Story Segregation. In one of the endings it's already been shown that there are a lot more colors of Pikmin than have shown up in gameplay.

I would probably buy the arbitrary limit anyway. I'd probably be able to keep track of only around 100 at a time since they'd probably move so clunkily and be so easy to lose by sunset if you got a lot more than that out at once.
Unless the days were longer. Or you had a lot more people playing.
Regarding why Pikmin follow the Captains, I'd reckon that having someone strong enough to toss you up to higher vantage points to better attack predators and retrieve goodies is a plus, too.
Switch FC code: SW-4420-1809-1805Not the game we'd all been waiting for, but
it does look rather intriguing nonetheless.
It looks kinda slow, but it's nice to see Pikmin expanding into spinoffs.
You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique! It looks different, but a good kind of different. Glad we didn't have to wait another nine years for another game, even if it's a spinoff.
Hopefully this isn't the Pikmin 4 they were hinting at. I wonder if they'll have another new Pikmin type if they'll just stick with the primary colors squad.
It kinda looks like Kirby Mass Attack except you can't jump.
You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique!Haha wow Facebook's news feed presented this like it was legit when it's pretty clearly a joke.
I've seen some petitions that are pretty stupid, though. Maybe even stupider than this one if it wasn't a parody.
Oh, so it was a joke petition all along?
That's good to know. Surely this fandom isn't that petty.
"Wonder if Lexie's gonna be free after his shift today..."Are there people actually mad about this game existing? This isn't a Federation Force scenario. We know a Pikmin 4 is coming. Getting spinoffs is a good thing. It means the game franchise is expanding.
Pikmin 2D looks pretty meh.
Kind of surprised that it isn't more of a Lemmings clone, really, seems like a no-brainer.
Eh, Nintendo already has a series of Lemmings clones. No need to oversaturate their systems with yet another one.
A lot of people are theorizing that this game is being developed by Arzest (formerly known as Artoon). I hope not. The second that's confirmed to be the case is the second I lose interest. I found Yoshi's Island DS and Yoshi's New Island to be mediocre.

From that petition:
Fucking hilarious
Anyway, I'll admit, the gameplay of the main Pikmin series has never interested me, so I'm probably more excited for the platformer than most are. It looks like something I can actually enjoy, as a fan of 2-D platformers, especially ones with interesting gimmicks.
Insert witty 'n clever quip here.I'm glad the petition is a joke. There was a user legitimately raging on the Pikmin Reddit about it, so you can never really tell anymore. Thankfully, he seemed to be the only one, and most people were telling him he was being ridiculous.
I'm pretty hyped over Pikmin getting a spin-off. After the three year wait for Pikmin 3, it's nice to know Nintendo considers the series relevant enough to make a spin-off for. It does look a bit bare bones at the moment, but hopefully it'll get a bit more meat to it later on in development. Considering the name isn't even final yet, chances are it's still early in development.
The 3DS game is called "Hey! Pikmin" and will be released July 28, alongside a very cute Pikmin amiibo.
Not how I expected the sequel to Hey You, Pikachu! to take shape.
Your preferences are not everyone else's preferences.
I can't say I'm too thrilled with it rehashing the plot of Pikmin 1 with elements of 2 but I'm sure I can look past it. I do wonder what the point of changing the planet is, considering it's basically the Pikmin planet in all but name.
Joy, now the "Steve!" army can spread to Pikmin 3 as well.
You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique!
