Nocturnal Pikmin would probably be black. Since they survive the tough nights, maybe they have a tough shell?
They aren't immune to hazards, but they are the only Pikmin you can take out with you at night. Getting other colors of them is possible, but you need an underground Candypop Bud to do so—any regular Pikmin refuse to come out at night. However, if you get regulars through this method, the Black Pikmin will protect them for just long enough for you to return to your ship.
"Proto-Indo-European makes the damnedest words related. It's great. It's the Kevin Bacon of etymology." ~MadrugadaI'm really excited! So far, all your ideas sound pretty awesome, lets hope Nintendo thinks of something similar.
Black Pikmin sound like they'd be evil. It's just simple contrast.
I got a weird idea...the Titan Dweevil from the last game laid eggs after "eating" Louie, so it laid a bunch of eggs that hatch into evil "captains" that can control black Pikmin.
There definitely have to be Green and Orange Pikmin.
Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Purple, and... White, because we don't need two purples.

Orange and green are apparently the favorites, if mostly for the fact that they'd fill out the spectrum.
Where would you put em though? Likely not their own onion, and the ship would probably be too full of white and purple...
I was thinking Whites could be promoted to full Onion status, maybe being Nerfed somewhat in the process. Personally, I'm hoping for Green and Cyan Pikmin, but I can't think of what Orange would do.

You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique!Hmmm maybe the nocturnal Pikmin, instead of being stronger or tougher, are stealthy?

Oh right, Pikmin with more Elemental Powers.
All of it sounds good though.
The main nerf I imagine White would get would be losing their ability to kill things quickly through suicide. If you could produce them with the ease of the Onion, that would probably be a problem. Their Fragile Speedster status and elemental immunity is probably fine, though—and they could probably safely drop the "buried treasure" finding thing, since that was a bit superfluous anyway.
If any Pikmin were to accquire Dishing Out Dirt powers, I'd think it'd be the earth-shaking Purples. Perhaps changing their powers to make them not such a combat squasher while giving them an immunity to, say, being crushed by boulders.
"Proto-Indo-European makes the damnedest words related. It's great. It's the Kevin Bacon of etymology." ~MadrugadaPoison Pikmin cannot be not poisonous. Those giant pink eyes would have no use.
And the treasure finding is good too. Really, I say keep them in the ship where you can't mass produce them and still keep all their abilities. That's what makes them such hot commodities.
And heh...Pikmin invulnerable to rocks just makes me think of bouncy rocks flying off onto other enemies....

Hence my saying "if." Although I still think the buried treasure thing is a little silly.
"Proto-Indo-European makes the damnedest words related. It's great. It's the Kevin Bacon of etymology." ~MadrugadaI'd say that if they decide to make an Earth themed Pikmin, then they should give the Whites' digging abilities to them. Earth could easily have tunneling as a major focus. I imagine they'd have shovel-hands used to move dirt. They could also use dirt as a projectile, but it would be really weak and better off for puzzles or the really patient types.
Not sure how plant Pikmin would work though.
All Pikmin are "plant" Pikmin. ;P
And switching abilities around just makes it confusing. And Olimar, being the crazy biologist he is would have to explain it all away due to some kind of "biological shift" or "inter-communal adaptation" or something which'd make too little sense.

The "Plant" Pikmin would be more in tune with their plant-y nature. Immunity to fungal spores (Different from poison), can make Pellet Posies sprout instantaneously, can "work" seeds until they sprout into an object (Walkways, treasures, clusters of pellets, berries, etc.), and mature into flowers even while above ground.
You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique! On the subject of flowers, there should be some more new sprays.
Such as a spray that temporarily grants all Pikmin elemental immunity. (Ultra-Sweet Spray?) Or maybe a spray that temporarily grants Pikmin resistence against being eaten (Maybe Ultra-Stinky Spray).
"Proto-Indo-European makes the damnedest words related. It's great. It's the Kevin Bacon of etymology." ~MadrugadaAnd then Ultra-Salty Spray that makes enemies weaker.
One can only guess how they come to those ideas...
Maybe Green or orange pikmin could do some sort of building. Walls to temporarily defend from monsters, or paths that allow the pikmin to move faster. Or maybe a type of pikmin that can throw the other pikmin like the captains, allowing a bombardment of tiny vegetable men.
As I type this I have a sword in one hand and a gun in the other. All the other Pikmin can already build bridges and tear down walls. Putting the walls back up and tearing bridges down seem to be counterproductive...
Unless they could build walls anywhere, shielding your other troops. Then it might be more helpful.
"Proto-Indo-European makes the damnedest words related. It's great. It's the Kevin Bacon of etymology." ~MadrugadaHow could you build them anywhere...just throw em on a spot? Or press a certain button?
Or maybe they could just be the walls...root into the ground and make their head leaves really big so you can use em as barriers.
I was thinking Ultra-Sweet Spray to restore the captain's health, and Ultra-Sour Spray to effect the Pikmin somehow. Not sure what, though.
You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique!Ultra-Sour could be the "No eating" or "All resistences temporarily" one.
Maybe an Ultra-Sticky spray: Temporarily prevents all Pikmin from being blown away or thrown off enemies!
"Proto-Indo-European makes the damnedest words related. It's great. It's the Kevin Bacon of etymology." ~Madrugada"Resistance to all" sounds like too much of a game breaker to me. It would destroy any puzzle that'd require navigating around the traps or need to force you to use a specific type of Pikmin.
Hell yes! Maybe Dark, Nocturnal Pikmin.
