Too little, too late. They had two weeks to "clarify" their plans, yet they chose to only speak after implementing them.

Edit: I think that if Tumblr had a dislike button, the last two posts from Tumblr staff would make Star Wars Battlefront II look like an announcement of Donald Trump and Ajit Pai being convicted.

If you want to look at the content of a blog marked as sensitive you can follow these steps while logged on:

On your desktop browser, write www.tumblr.com/dashboard/blog/blogname to see the content of the blog on the sidebar.

If you browse in your phone, just set the tab to desktop mode before opening it.

Their app will let you browse hidden blogs.

EDIT:

Ok, the above works when desktop browsing with Firefox mobile. It does not work with Chrome. You CAN see your own blog in desktop mode in Chrome by accessing www.tumblr.com/blog/yourblog

I've finally decided to give up on downloading or even keeping the last few blogs that I've been intending to archive; I never expected them to demand so much space, and it just dawned on me that those particular ones are merely aggregators of admittedly noteworthy fanart and official art from across a huge swath of genres, media, artists and other possible categories rather than making their own, and TumblThree offers absolutely no way of attributing any identity to even a fraction of those hundreds of thousands of images.

Just because I'm interested in fan lore, would anyone mind giving my a synopsis of that horrible Voltron ship war that happened on tumblr earlier this year? I've heard it described as one of the bloodiest since Harry Potter and Naruto at their peaks, but not being in the fandom I don't know the actual context of it.

All I know is that they introduced a new gay character in the latest season from Shiro's past, only to have him killed off an episode later.

This article does a decent write up of what happened. Clearly biased towards the Sheith side of things, but nevertheless I can independently verify a lot of it from my own experiences on the periphery of the fandom.

The Bury Your Gays issue is mostly a separate matter. Shiro had an ex-boyfriend who only appeared in two scenes, one at the beginning of the season where he broke up with Shiro for good, and one midway through the season where he was a combatant killed by enemy forces. Klance fans had adopted him and Shiro as Ship Mates hoping they would get back together, thus "freeing" Keith up for Lance but this clearly never came to be. A lot of their outrage over his death was disappointment at the loss of Ship Mates masked as legitimate outrage over the Bury Your Gays issue.

In the end it was all for nothing anyway, as the only victorious ships involved Allura/Lance (which was Klance's second most hated ship but also Sheith's favorite Ship Mates) which ends tragically, and Shiro/a completely new character. The show treats Shiro as Keith's Not Love Interest but it's clearly a platonic relationship. Only Lance's sister, a very minor character, shows any serious interest in Keith who is implied to be a Chaste Hero or full-on asexual. Not a single shipper got their way.

I've never had it in me to watch this show because I only heard about it through insane amounts of fandom drama. There were so so many posts about how it's full of gay representation, but most of that seems to be purely fandom created aside from a main characters ex who is killed off in what many felt was just queer baiting.

These articles sum up the Shiro stuff, with this also having evidence that his last-second love interest was in two places at once and it was clearly a PR move more than anything else.

From what I understand this trouble began in season 7 where Shiro's sexuality was confirmed at SDCC and hugely hyped, only for much of it to be implied and his boyfriend dying offscreen an episode after he was introduced. Two female, villainous characters who were lovers also died. Season 8 did fix the latter issue, but made Shiro's situation way worse as not only was it a last-second thing, he apparently gave up his dreams of flying, which was a key point of his character, to be with a random background character who he rarely interacted with and the audience had never seen before.

The Protomen enhanced my life.

Not queerbaiting, as queerbaiting refers to Bait-and-Switch Lesbians, which Klance shippers, in a widespread campaign of misinformation, claim is true of their ship despite the two barely interacting or even being on friendly terms for much of the show. The resident gay character Shiro is pretty well-done and nonstereotypical for most of the show, quite a few fans would consider him the most compelling character, although he debatably counts as Hide Your Gays (I personally thought his conversation with his ex made it clear what their deal is, though others would disagree).

The showrunners have always stressed that Shiro was meant to be the show's Primary Gay Character, but they and the show's social media are guilty of overhyping the relevancy of his boyfriend. As did Netflix marketing, but that's out of their control.

One of the two female lovers was supposed to have died, leading the other to a Roaring Rampage of Revenge, but the scenes were changed so that the other merely had a catastrophic breakup with her before reconciling.

They changed the finale at the last second in an attempt to correct Shiro's issue by giving him a Last-Minute Hookup where he weds one of his associates complete with kiss so there's no way to ignore that he's gay, but since they never interacted in a meaningful way, and since the epilogue ends his story on a massive Out of Character moment, it arguably does nothing to actually fix the issue in now treating his sexuality as token and Pandering to the Base.

So it sounds like, from that article, one ship was basically going ballistic on every other possibility?

Pretty much. Not that other ships didn't have their surprising share of toxic fans, but they get overshadowed by extreme fans from the Fan-Preferred Couple going above and beyond to be as exceptionally toxic as possible for no good reason. And to an extent, while it doesn't excuse them, the toxicity within many of the less popular ships got as bad as it did due to all the pushback from the Klantis in the first place.

Still haven't gotten around to finishing this series. The fandom kind of ensured I never really got involved (I'm a fanfic writer but I've backburner'd any ideas I had due to them being AU/canon divergent in nature and none of the fan-preferred ships and the fandom scares me).

...But anyway, this fandom is uh. I'm not sure powder keg quite covers it.

Gotta admit what I'm hearing about this last season kinda makes me go :/ though. Feels like a letdown, but I'll give it a fair chance when I've got the time.

EDIT: I didn't read right and thought I was in the Voltron thread aaaaaaadkjfkghn

One thing I sometimes really hate about shippers is when they are using "It'd be really progressive and you are offensive if you disagree with my ship" as argument/defense why their ship should be OTP tongue

I mean, this is kinda why I try to remember that majority of shippers ARE teens. Sure there are adult shippers, but it helps keep my sanity to remember that majority of them are teens hence why they don't notice when they are doing something really offensive like using IRL issues as shield for characters they want to make fanart of

Never gotten just how far people take shipping.

And yeah I am pretty damn sure those are young teens that just found progressive stuff and have no clue how to express their support of it properly.

I have seen it before many times.

I think one of the grossest things that's come out of Tumblr and shipping culture is the idea that to have an opinion about a character or ship a character, you have to be like that character and then "prove" that you deserve to talk about them. In other words, you can only like or have an opinion on a gay character if you're gay, and you need evidence.

Its lead to some really sick shit, like kids and teens feeling like they have to out themselves and divulge sensitive information in some circles just to feel like they're allowed to talk about their favorite character or discuss any identity issues surrounding them.

This also shows up a lot when sexual assault or rape is discussed, and some nasty people will insist that the other person "prove" that they're a victim and give extremely traumatic information to them. It's sick. Tumblr's version of fandom social justice has a really bad habit of shitting on actual victims and minorities, who are expected to "prove" or "earn" their right to discuss issues that directly effect them.

[up][up][up]Some are like that, other are just fan dumb who use progresiveness as way to shield for what they like and a third part are guys and girl who dosent know that liking something dosent mean that something is correct.

[up][up]I will said because tumblr and "progresive" fans stand in the experience vs rationalist spectrum, to explain myself here: usually right wing and conserbative and edgy fandom dismise experience for "reason"(which usually means being a dick and shut up other while not giving a shit) which is why they tend to be so tone defef, unware when someone exploit them or their own fan service because they see everything in this ideal world when thing as just things.

more progresive and tumblr like instead value more experiencie and who you are, in part because of privilage and the idea a background can said more of certein things but a times they take this into a very "we need to check out you in order to see what you said is true" which is invasive at times and pretty gross at the top of that.
