Quickie Questions

Go To

This thread is for quick questions. A "quick question" is a question which has a relatively quick, generally factual answer; a question which is not likely to inspire an extended discussion.

e.g.

Quick Question: How tall is an average ten-year-old boy?
Not a Quick Question: Why are Americans obsessed with guns?

Quick Question: Why is ALS sometimes called Lou Gehrig's Disease? Who was Lou Gehrig?
Not a Quick Question: In Alan Dean Foster's Thranx Commonwealth series, is Pip a Mary Sue?

Get the idea?

^ Firefox and IE should both do that, actually. And then there's Firefox with Tab Mix Plus which is even more awesome.

I know Opera is capable of this. It also saves so that it comes back should the browser crash. I'm less sure about the others though.

Is skydiving into a harbor from a helicopter any of the following?

  • Safe
  • Legal
  • An awesome entrance to a social gathering?

No, probably not, and maybe.

What it could definitely be, though, is a great start to a Bond movie.

Also, a question from me for once:

Do you think of Leslie as a dominantly male or female name?

Female, personally.

Female. I seem to remember it being female in the US and male in the Commonwealth, but I might be confusing that with a different name.

What Grog said. Though skydiving is a fairly safe sport if done correctly, it can be equally as dangerous if you don't know what you're doing. Especially if this is your first time skydiving, seeing as you'd have to know how to maneuver the thing and how to land in the water properly... and you'd run the added risk of the parachute landing on top of you or dragging you underneath the water if you don't release it properly.

Also, Leslie is a female name if you ask me.

I'm aware it can be a male name but where I'm from it's mostly seen as a female one.

In the US, I'd say Leslie is a female name now.

Seems to me it's one of those "used to be male, now more commonly female" ones. Like Aubrey.

I didn't think I was dumb enough to enjoy this, but I was.

Is it normal to hate people and/or works for ideological reasons? I read Man Without A Body's troper page, and I don't know if I should agree with that way of thinking or not.

This can vaguely answer your question He added most of those gushes on his page himself.

But no, it's not wrong to hate people at all. It's just wrong and against the rules to do anything about it or act on it, because opinions are subjective, and while others may hate him for ideological reasons, others will not.

Um...how does his page history help answer my question?

It's not disagreeing with other ideologies that I'm questioning, it's whether or not you should act like a Fan Hater about it. From his troper page:

  • Fiction Hater: I hate a lot of fiction. If you're a fan of it, I'm sure we can agree to disagree...
    • Fan Haters - ...unless I hate it for ideological reasons.

I'm opposed to the idea of fan hating and hatedoms, so I'm leaning towards no.

I don't quite know what he's talking about, but I remember that his Fan Haters entry once went something like this:

"However, if you like 300 or the works of Ayn Rand, then I will generally think less of you as a person."

Does that help?

Ah... well, I would say that that's normal, or at least not uncommon. That's not a reason for or against it being a good thing, of course.

I just have trouble trying to wrap my head around the idea that, if you like X, then I like you less. Why should I care whether or not you like 300, or Atlas Shrugged, or whatever else? Why shouldn't I agree to disagree when it comes to ideological differences?

^ Because it's a troper page by somebody with a less-than-agreeable attitude.

It's not like it effects the wiki as a whole, and it's not like we can stop him from snidely thinking he's better than fans of Atlas Shrugged or 300 fans.
