I'm pretty much of the mind that the angel is Hayden really trying to sell the idea that what his done is a necessary evil...

and Doom Slayer doesn't buy it at all, cause he has heard it a million times

I do hope that is the case or alternatively, a rogue angel disapproving of Slayer's actions and decided to take matters in their hands.

I feel angels and demons being the same and evil has been overplayed, so...

Here's an easter egg ma boi The Goddamn Doomguy (fine tumblr blog about all things DOOM) found and reposted from twitter:

https://the-goddamn-doomguy.tumblr.com/post/185486929240

DOPEFISH LIIIIIIIIIIIVES!!!!!1111oneoneeleven

It's a pleasure to see this long running easter egg alive and well.

EDIT: coz I don't need double post when I can just edit but while I appreciate Battle Mode, I want a multiplayer that's demons vs demons. Demon Wars or something... two opposing demon factions, led by a demonic individual capable of ordering AI controlled demons and fight for territory.

I would love that!

Another mode is, because of so much maneuvering and navigating through environment like grabbing onto ledges, pole vaulting and dashing is a series of Le Parkour based challenges, where the objective is to do jumping and dashing to reach the finish point in record time. Or anything involving beating the timer by doing crazy acrobatic skills!

Some further edit: it seems people are not fans of new HUD. I personally don't mind it, for longest FPS HU Ds always tended to be too minimalist and bland. I like the techy and colorful aspect of it. It should be an option however, to be able to choose your preferred HUD at will.

It seems serviceable to me. Not terribly dissimilar to the original at the bottom when you think about it.

Guess what other easter egg people found?

As for the HUD, I understand wanting to buck the trend and be more elaborate but minimalist HUDs are just my preference. I'll probably get used to it though. What I won't get used to is that vaguely-Minecraft-esque grunting the Slayer does every time he takes damage, I swear that better be toggleable or I'm gonna get sick of it fast.

Storywise with the Slayer vs. Heaven thing... I really hope it's like some have speculated and just some rogue Knight Templar angels or something. IIRC several of Doom's original creators were practicing Christians so it seems a little disrespectful to bring the franchise into God and Satan Are Both Jerks territory. Plus I just really like the idea of the Slayer being on a Mission from God.

That's true. Plus going by that tablet thing that was found by the Mars Expedition an Angel or something gave him all that power to begin with.

I now have the image in my head of Doom Slayer and the Blues Brothers in the same car.

Yeah, I’m hoping it’s not a both sides thing. I come to Doom to shoot the hell out demons and idiot humans that work with them. It’s simple and it works.

Just learned about some new demons to fight, one is named Whiplash. It's a demon with cybernetic serpentine lower body. Looks cool as hell (heheh)

Wields serrated daggers.

https://the-goddamn-doomguy.tumblr.com/post/185500516770 ma boi Doomguy compiled the screenshots! Love the demon designs.

I seriously dig Whiplash's design.

The robo-legged Carcass looks Strogg-like.

If it is rogue angels, then they're basically using the Mars cultists as a pretext for destroying humanity, right?

I'm guessing upper management in that regard would say "Wait, you did what?" in response to the possible going against the Slayer.

My initial assumption was that these were the Night Sentinels, the people who the Doomslayer initially betrayed to the demons. So on the one hand, they've got a personal grudge, but on the other hand we'll get to see that maybe the Doomslayer had a point.

I thought it was someone else that betrayed Argent D'Nur to the demons.

I can't recall exactly. It might have just been implied that the Doomslayer was the betrayer. But he was definitely one of the guards.

I think all the Sentinels are dead though, and Argent D'nur has been wholly incorporated into Hell. You saw their ghosts guiding you to the wraiths in the final level.

I figured it was a minor retcon, the kind games do all the time. "Well of course most of them were killed, but there were some survivors in a random colony somewhere, and now centuries later they're back to full strength and still pissed."

I'm not sure if I would prefer the Night Sentinels to a completely new faction, I'm just saying it was my initial assumption.

Well, they do say "Sentinel Homeworld," so maybe some survivors settled there before they had to leave.

For some reason.

It could simply be a case of Divinely Appearing Demons.

What if it is mr prideful himself? Or Doom's equivalent of Lucifer.

That was my thought too. Satan was the brightest of the angels before he fell, and while there has been a recent trend toward portraying angels as cold and lifeless, that angel dude in the trailer looks positively sinister rather than emotionless. I'm guessing Satan didn't change appearance upon falling from grace, so he still looks like an angel (Good Omens does this at the climax). Him being Satan would also account for his desire to punish humanity for their sins, and hey, perhaps the angel who granted power to the Night Sentinels isn't Satan, but Michael.

And killing Satan is totally a thing Doomguy would do.

The Doomslayer and the Betrayer of the Knights are implied to be two different people

The Doomslayer is respected feared by the Demons while the Betrayer is held with nothing but contempt and mockery

Yeah the Heaven and Hell are just different flavors of each other is so played out at this point.

My headcanon is that Argent D'Nur is basically heaven (or at least connected to it). The Night Sentinels were angels, but were defeated to one last member who became the Doomslayer. This would explain the Devil, but No God nature of the setting-heaven has essentially fallen.

[up] In the backstory it's explained that Doomslayer got his speed and strength from an angel after Argent D'Nur had already fallen.

I don't remember anything about speed or strength, just mention of "a shield of adamantine strength." Which might be a reference to his power armor, or the energy shield that was protecting him in the sarcophagus, or even a metaphor regarding his Save Scumming.

And I don't remember the word "angel" being used a single time in the game. I thought it was another Night Sentinel.

I'm sure the wiki has transcripts of all the Slayer Testaments, but I'm too busy to look them up right now.

Actually, it is the Seraphim that bestowed Doom Slayer with infinite power and stamina to fight the force of Hell for eons as well as supervising him.

I feel silly forgetting theyre called Seraphim and not angels. And yes it is gonna be their first debut in Eternal.

Speaking of it, you all remember the voice st beginning of reboot? Exact same voice in trailer for e3 story trailer...

The trailer implies that the Seraphim have decided to leave humanity to their fate.

"They are no longer your people to save."

Maybe not superficially, but Doom Slayer would be damned (no pun intended) if he was going to let Hell consume a somewhat-innocent realm that happens to be our solar system.
