Less Wrong's cultists believe that someday AI is going to transcend humanity or summat; it's gonna be more powerful than humans. I think they mostly think this is a good thing if you manage to program the super-AI (which they also believe will be able to reprogram itself) to be good.

Roko, I think, said summat like "what if a good AI decides that because it's good to work on the AI (which makes everything better), it should punish everyone who doesn't spend all their time working on it?"

(It should be noted that said cultists also believe that Because Morality Is Numbers, it's "better" to torture one person for 50 years than to slightly annoy 50 million people for one second.)

Anyhow, Roko's question gave all the cultists nightmares of being tortured by the very AI they're trying to create; Roko was banned, his Basilisk became That Which Must Not Be Spoken Of (hence the "basilisk"), and even Roko said he regretted even having the thought and potentially giving the God AI the idea.

TL:DR: Roko asked "what if our God AI ends up thinking torture is good" and it gave some cultists nightmares and got him banned.
