well... Dawn of War 1 was basically a Command and Conquer reskin... so 6 of one, half a dozen of the other.
but I preferred Do W 2, the gameplay was more intense, and lore accurate, plus the Guard in Retribution were bloody awesome
advancing the front into TV TropesIf the Steam store page on Do W 3 speaks true, apparently battles will be of a larger scale in this game. We've commanded squads in the previous Dawn of War games, so does that mean we're stepping up to platoons? The presence of larger units like Knights might suggest so.
Also, I'm digging that persistent army concept. Do W 2 was a bit too much of an RPG, so here's hoping they get the balance right in this one.
yeySpace Marines don't have "platoons". They go Squad, Company, Chapter.
From what I can gather it's a mix of 1 and 2, where you control large numbers of units but you have a number of elite units that you can upgrade like your squads in Dawn of War 2, and can also do that with the Knights and whatnot that are huge units like the Eldar Titans and others.
Thank fuck. Only having 4 hero squads to play with at a time was kind of irritating. Dawn of War was never really meant to be a real-time tactics game, and it always bothered me that the named squad leader just happens to be the last person alive in a squad no matter what.
Things like that- they just bring the sense of artificiality home. Yeech.

yeyCome to think of it, I wonder if the grander scale and the persistent army will change the type of building you do. Like instead of building a Chapel-Barracks to call in Marines and doing the same research in map after map, you might be building defenses, traps, bridges and roads, that kind of thing. I could be down for that.
Yeah, that seems better, especially since you could just call in squads by drop-pod. Really all of the other barracks and stuff in the first game and its expansions and whatnot just had multiple drop pods fall onto the buildings and the Astartes would then come out.

I am totally fine with only 3 races. Relic has shown that balance isn't their strong spot, and it's hard enough to balance 3 distinct races as is. I'm a bit sad to see the Imperial Guard not being present, but I'm fine with Space Marines and Orks.
Here's an article by PC gamer with screenshots and some more details.
They'll have more in their full magazine release apparently. A summary:
- 3 races
- Big armies
- Bases
- Elite units level up
- Super units for each faction
- Space marines get a giant laser superweapon controlled by the player.
- Cover system tweaks.
Also, I like the look of the wraithbone in the trailer. Hopefully that gets incorporated into the game. I was also surprised myself that the trailer wasn't as action packed as the cinematics for the first two games. It was really sombre and represents a part of the 40k universe usually not represented in most 40k media.
does nobody else see it? the base building aspect is identical, the combat is identical, and yet people moan about Do W 2 being too similar to a different game?

Base building mechanics are not identical; only C&C Generals uses a worker unit. DoW is closer to Warcraft than C&C.
Combat is also not identical, the entire C&C franchise has a grand total of ONE unit with melee combat. Warcraft has melee units, but I know of no other RTS where melee infantry have ranged weapons and ranged infantry being engaged in melee will melee back instead of shooting at point blank range.
Anyway, let's consider two facts:
- The Steam page of the game apparently claims that the story is centered around a powerful weapon the factions are fighting each other for.
- Multiple Youtube comments are claiming that the trailer's opening quote is from the Necron codex.
What do you guys make of that? Necrons for surprise Big Bad?

Speaking of Company of Heroes, I dearly hope this game doesn't take from it in terms of it's gameplay.
Am I the only one who felt Dawn of War 2 and it's expansions felt like Co H reskins? Co H was a game I used to like, until I realized just how much of a transparent sham it is. It uses lots of pretty explosions and particle effects to disguise the fact that it's combat is just rolling dice.
You'll have these completely stupid situations where two squads are less than ten meters apart from one-another, and they're just unloading at each-other, hitting fuck-all. And then occasionally, one Ork or Nazi will get nicked by a single bullet whose shooter wasn't even aiming their weapon in that direction. Hate that shit.
This trailer is pretty damn good, though. It's actually kind of somber and understated, with the emphasis being on the perpetual violence and brutality that characterizes the 'verse, which is not something that you'd expect from 40k at all.
That Space Marine kind of smiles as he dies. I'm more accustomed to 40k being garish and over-the-top.
