^ What. The. HFIL was that? From what I could make out, you're in the crowd that complains about Kai cutting down the series. And you did so in a very poorly typed post. Yeah....you, my good sir, are a troll. May I kindly ask you to leave this thread now?

I don't really see why so many people seem complaining about Kai. I mean, it has basically the same story as the other American edits of DBZ, doesn't it? Anyway, I really like the new opening theme song, and showing the series I grew up with to my younger brother is fun. Since "CN" is giving all of their fans the cold shoulder, I really hope this series does well, because it might encourage Nicktoons Network to become a new haven for American anime fans who don't want to break the law and can't afford to buy anything on DVD.

Yes! People complain because they compare this cut-down, edited DBZ anime to the original padded, filler-filled DBZ anime which they find to be the better series. Well as much as I liked the original series, I love Kai just as much. It's not trying to be the original DBZ, nor is it trying to replace it. You can still watch and perfer original Z; it would make less sense for Kai to just be a reanimated version of the original show. It's a whole different DBZ experience; one that distills the storylines and gives a "true to the manga" presentation in anime form. While the new music and voiceovers they have in the Japanese version are pretty unnessecary, everything else in the show rocks. Plus, it's getting the best English dub of the series to date. cool

Anyway, I really like the new opening theme song

Ah yes, "Dragon Soul." It's not quite as good as "Chala-Head Chala" but still a Crowning Music Of Awesome.

and showing the series I grew up with to my younger brother is fun.

Oh yeah. Another reason for Kai's existance; to create a whole new generation of Dragon Ball fans! evil grin

Something I find odd about Dragon Soul is all the references to fighting for "love, wich they don't really do. Especially odd is setting the line "We're in love now" to a shot of Goku and Vegeta fighting. Uh?

Otherwise it's a really awesome song, especially with some of the visuals.

^ Don't worry; the line is actually "we're in luck now." Love was only mentioned in the lines "you give me love" and "we will fight for love and glory."

I've seen a bit of Kai. the Only thing I'm dissapointed with is why couldn't they make the animation like the Opening Themes. It makes no sense to me.

Since when were you under the impression that I was Aizen?

Too much money, even for Toei.

Besides, it helps the nostalgia for the older fans.^^

I'm loving Frieza's new voice, and although I don't like how the cutting-down gives us some really sloppy censoring (at some points it's even confusing; A recent example was Vegeta's murder of Guldo, where it goes from 'odd blue line through Guldo' to 'guldo has no head' to 'vegeta blows up a piece of ground'), I do like Kai. Did they switch Ginyu's VA? He sounds a little less...scratchy. It's really fun to watch Kai and then play some of the video games which obviously have different voices for some characters.

They did, Brice Armstrong was switched for R. Bruce Elliott.

Yes. I'm in it for the Adaptation Distillation.

I may be in the minority but I can't see the animation style in the opening working in the series. It's gorgeous animation to be sure but it looks like animated manga cover illustrations rather than animated manga artwork like the original Z anime had and thus Kai still has.

If you don't get what I mean, compare this image of Vegeta to the first time we see him in the opening of Kai.

Why do people complain about this edited version that we hate? Its just like all those other edited versions we hated, isn't it?

The reason why they made Kai is so it doesn't take fucking forever to get through fights. Who wants to wait 10 episodes for Goku to beat Frieza?

^^^ Edited versions aren't nessicarily bad, though. Just different.

(BTW, LOL @ Bibleman/Luxor Spawndroth icon. Now I've seen everything.)

^ Exactly. I do miss alot of the filler they cut but some cuts are for the best (particularly in this saga.) Though to be fair, Goku vs Freeza was always pretty long, even in the manga.

No, they're bad. Granted Kai is bad for an entirely different set of reasons—namely, why couldn't DBZ have gotten a new animated telling, like the Guyver did, instead of just the same damn footage re-cut?

I like Dragon Soul as much as the next person, but this is still essentially the Star Wars Special Edition of Dragon Ball Z.

Lemme reiterate: Same. Damn. Footage. I wasn't willing to buy an edit back in the Pioneer days, why should I be expected to do so now?

The Star Wars Special Edition wasn't bad either, Greedo shooting first aside.

You're not. You can just go watch the original DBZ and enjoy it. Leave those of us who like the different experience Kai brings us to watch and enjoy it.

Honestly I wasn't bugged by Greedo inasmuch as that the whole thing was basically a lame excuse to insert CGI and song numbers into movies that really didn't need it. Especially when the documentaries on the VHS editions pointed out special effects flaws they supposedly fixed... which they actually didn't (the matte lines on the Rancor for example).

BTW A friend of mine was shocked and amazed that anybody could identify my avatar.

There was only one song number (a textbook Big-Lipped Alligator Moment one) and I never saw what was so wrong with that or the CGI. Most complaints on the special editions are They Changed It, Now It Sucks!. I personally think the 2004 special edition was the best version of A New Hope (because of Greedo and Han's simultaneous shots and the better looking CGI Jabba), ditto The Empire Strikes Back (for Ian Mcdiarmid replacing that other bland actor as the Emperor in that one scene. Made better continuity) but I like the 1997 special edition of Return of the Jedi best because it had the awesome victory tune in the ending WITHOUT goddamn Hayden Christenson. But we're kinda veering off topic now, so....

BTW A friend of mine was shocked and amazed that anybody could identify my avatar.

Bibleman happens to be one of my favorite guilty pleasures (Mainly when Willie Aames was around. He shouldn't have quit doing it; lord knows the poor guy has suffered alot since...Oh, and when Luxor Spawndroth was around. No villains they've had since have been nearly as fun.)

My main problem with the CGI was that it meshed so badly—you could tell what scenes were filmed in 79-83 and what were filmed in 1997. That and the banthas in Mos Eisley seemed to be there just to draw attention to the new special effects. I'm not a big fan of the Rule of Cool.

The Jabba scene IMO was just pointless. The same information (even down to some of the same dialogue) was given during the Greedo scene. It was just needless padding.

Mainly though, I just don't see the point. The Star Wars movies were fine just the way they were, they didn't need to be changed. You could argue that DBZ did need some trimming down (and I'll agree the Namek filler arcs were tedious), though I disagree, and also think that if the new version is cut to resemble the manga, then it begs the question: "Why not just read the manga?"

Bibleman is quickly becoming one of my guilty pleasures too. Is it sad that it almost got me interested in reading the Bible as well?
