Atmosphere's fanbase is about as annoying as they come. But that shouldn't stop you from liking the group themselves.

Currently checking Afu-Ra.

Loving the cutting work on a lot of his tracks (by "a lot" I mean "both of the ones I've heard thusfar")

Comments indicate that this is DJ Premier's doing, which makes sense.

RE: UK hip-hop. Outside the trip-hop scene and The Streets, haven't found anything interesting.

So, I just placed another order on CD's at a online store. Mostly finnish hip-hoop, but also Fear of a Black Planet (which I don't own yet, and it was on sale).

British hip-hop is a very close-doored scene. There're only a few artists who make their presence known, notably Streets and Dizzee Rascal.

Yeah with the UK, you basically have to listen to BBC 1Xtra to hear the underground stuff, or get on the local scenes which are pretty separate from each other. Roots Manuva, Ty, The Nextmen, Phi-Life Cypher, and Blade are good contemporary examples.

But most of what I like from here is our light-hearted and clever stuff- Dirty Diggers, Ty, Elemental, Aspects, DJ Format.

First time I heard Afu-Ra was on a track by Brit producers Funky Fresh Few, it was about Tekken, which got my attention at the time.

I just listened to "The 4th Branch", by Immortal Technique.

Is he always this Anvilicious, or do I need to listen to more?

Is Ghost of the Barbary Coast the name of the new album?

So I have a rather odd question of opinion.

If hip-hop wasn't called hip-hop (or rap, no cheating), what do you think it'd be called?

Well, "jazz" and "rock" allegedly started off as slang for sex (not clear on details), maybe the same thing could have happened to hip-hop.

PERSON 1: Hey, what music do you like?
PERSON 2: Oh, I like all music except for country and fuck.

As in Slam Poetry. Much more prevalent in france than elsewhere apparently. It's like Rap, only slower and with less emphasis on rhyme and less HAM.

Apart from Selgot, what about Kaff?

Why do they add "poetry" at the end, though? Just call it Slam!

Selgot, Kaff?

The "poetry" is there presumably to distance the genre from the rap scene.

You asked for alternate names to Rap music. And Slam is intimately liked to Rap. Many Slammers are also Rappers.

Yes, but Selgot? Kaff?

Anyway; I'd think it would have been seen as a sub-genre of Funk and/or Techno, which also has African-American origins.

That is an odd question.

Well, since they say it came from the late Cowboy referring to someone's dance moves.. I'd guess it would've been named for something else from the early Brooklyn scene otherwise. Or, since it borrowed a fair bit from Jamaican soundsystems, something to do with toasting, perhaps. Maybe just Toast. Hm, toast.

On another note, I'm finally listening to Abdominal's 2007 LP. His lung capacity knows no bounds.
