So this is it...

Vivid Strike 12: Everybody gets along ending

  • The (self-added) title really should clue you in on what happens on this episode,
  • Fuka and Rinne have officially joined the ranks of Nanoha-couples, y'all know what that implies.
  • We get to at least see Einhart and Sieg's training match, for a bit.

Well, I'm guessing that these two will provide commentary for the upcoming movie, along with the rest of the Vivid cast. Man, Force really is getting pushed into the wayside.

[up] They've nerfed Sieg... sad

Well, to be more serious, it's more likely that Einhardt somehow caught up with her, but, still, it's kinda jarring for me to see Sieg on defensive against someone whom (last I saw) she trashed so completely.

From the sounds of it, it seems like Sieg was adapting her fighting style to one she isn't used to to help Einhart train properly, so it's partly Einhart improving and partly Sieg handicapping herself for Einhart.

Incidentally, to mirror what Justinkal said earlier, I find it slightly funny that after they went through nearly the entire series with minimal sci-fi elements to ease in newcomers they suddenly dropped a quick scene of Fuka and Rinne riding a passenger spaceship through the sea of dimensions. evil grin

Here's hoping that the bluray bonus labeled "episode 13" is the obvious choice of content. Einhart kicking Fuuka's ass.

Y'know, I'm kinda wondering how Nanoha would react if she met Fuka and Rinne, and the two girls' reaction when they find out that A) Nanoha adopted Vivio and B) Nanoha is one of the most Bad Ass mages ever.

Aaaaand that's a wrap for Vivid Strike.

Random thoughts:

  • Jill gave her "I've been training you wrong this whole time" speech to Rinne, but then didn't actually mention changing her training at all. When Rinne said she still wanted to train under Jill, Jill just said that she was still going to work her so hard she'd throw up. So, so much for changing her training style?
  • Fuka actually changed clothes before she went to talk to Rinne. She's wearing a different outfit when she goes to talk to Einhard than when she shows up for tea and cake. That's adorable.
  • Seeing the reactions everyone had to the fight, including random minor characters, was fun.
  • Apparently even with magical space healing spells, going to the dentist still sucks.
  • I think this is the first time we've actually heard anyone say "I love you" in the entire Nanoha franchise (except maybe Nanoha to Vivio). Granted, in TOS and A's everyone was too young to really know what that meant (and Fate and Nanoha agreeing to be friends at the end of TOS was pretty much an "I love you" scene, only with "being friends" instead of being in love), and by the time Strikers rolls around they've already said it during the timeskip. So except for maybe Eiro and Caro, we sorta missed the boat on that anyway.
  • Einhard actually putting Sieg through her paces was fun, though I agree that it's because Seig's handicapping herself rather than because Einhard has actually gotten that strong that quickly.
  • Sudden unexplained (to newcomers to the franchise) dimensional warp ride home amused the hell out of me.
  • Worth pointing out: Rinne and Jill were both wearing Nakajima Gym outfits for the finals, and the fact that we see Rinne training with Fuka later also implies that they've joined Vivio's harem the Nakajima Gym. I'd say "I wonder what happened to the rest of Jill's trainees", but I'm not actually sure if she had any students besides Rinne.
  • Jill: "I don't know if you realized, but I really hated you." Nove: "I realized, I just didn't give a shit." Point to Nove.
  • The post-fight picture in the credits shows both Einhard and Fuka standing under their own power and smiling, so they both seemed to make it out of the fight intact, but Fuka is definitely worse for wear overall. My bet is that Einhard won by points or TKO rather than knockout.
  • That post-credits scene. "We're not finished yet", Einhard? Vivid Strike season two when?
  • In this episode's eyecatch has Rinne looking rather uncomfortable with her new place in Nakajima Gym Vivio's harem. Don't worry, Rinne, you'll get used to it.

Overall, Vivid Strike was fun. Definitely worth watching, and I was looking forward to the new episode every week. I'm not sure how I'd rate it compared to the rest of the franchise, honestly. It was a little disappointing not to see much of anyone outside the Vivid cast, but Vivid Strike never pretended to be anything but a side story, so I find it hard to hold that against it. I think the biggest downside to Vivid Strike compared to the rest of the series was the focus on pure strike arts, meaning that the rest of the Nanoha-style combat (which I really enjoy) was missing. I'm tempted to rank the franchise as A's = Strikers > Vivid > Vivid Strike > TOS, but on my recent rewatch I ended up enjoy TOS more than I thought I would, so I dunno.

Now we just settle in to wait for the bluray features that were mentioned a while ago, the third movie, and the Amazon streaming release in the US. Good to have things to look forward to again in this franchise.

This is more of a translation convention issue. Japanese has multiple different words that get translated in English as "love" in that type of sentence. The one that's used commonly in anime just generically means "love" (frequently used to talk about friends and family), whereas one that you hardly ever see exclusively means "love" in a romantic sense. This was not the romantic one.

Well, sure, you could definitely take it as meaning platonic, sisterly love between childhood friends. But my point is that I don't recall seeing anyone say that in any context before.

Hmm, that's a good point. I remember "Daisuki" being used in StrikerS Sound Stage X, when Ix said it to Subaru before she went into her coma, but I can't recall any other instance offhand.

And I loved Nove's laid back response when Jill declared how much she hated Nove. Jill went from Death Glare to absolutely flabbergasted for a moment there. evil grin

Aren't all worlds in TSAB sort of alternate Earths? Could just have developed weapons similarly.

As far as I know it's never been explained what exactly a "world" is — whether it's an alternate reality/parallel dimension sort of thing, or simply a planet somewhere else in the universe and the dimensional travel thing is just Subspace or Hyperspace, or what.

I personally like the theory that it's all parallel dimensions and every planet they go to is an alternate reality version of Earth, but that's just a fan theory as far as I'm aware.

Finally have some time to post on the finale.

Uh...Jill? It's nice that you and Rinne rekindled your relationship, but to use the same training methods? Not changing the regimen even a little? Well, Rinne hasn't objected to it in the first place, so...

Sieg, being edged out by Einhart? Impossible! Kidding, I know the handicap's intentional.

Hehe, never expected that everyone Fuuka and Rinne met saw their emotional battle. Very nice touch. Also having a tea party after beating the snot out of each other? What is this, Touhou or something?tongue

But yeah, FuuRinne's bond has been restored, and stronger than before. Yessy!waii

At first, I never thought much on Vivid Strike. By the show's end however, it became a nice addition to the Nanohaverse.

Within the various worlds, how do they handle trade? I mean, the TSAB function as a government, so are they ones who maintain trade within the worlds they administrate?

"Maintain trade" meaning what, enforcing industry standards and trade agreements and such? I don't think we ever see enough of the nuts and bolts of the Nanohaverse government to say for certain, but if it's not the TSAB doing it, we certainly don't have any idea who else would be.

Actually, now that I think about it, I don't think we've seen any kind of civilian side to the TSAB. We've basically seen military and police activities from them, with some edge casesnote , but nothing purely civilian. All of the sports stuff in Vivid and Vivid Strike are organized by the DSAA rather than the TSAB, for example, and the Infinite Library seems to be separate from the TSAB proper, and all the schools and orphanages we've seen are run by the Saint Church. So I think it's safe to say that the TSAB is essentially a military/police organization, not an entire government.

Of course, we haven't seen any sort of government beyond the TSAB, so it's hard to guess what sort of system TSAB-aligned worlds use. I'd be willing to bet that the TSAB is something like NATO or the United Nations (only with more teeth than either) — the TSAB handles stuff that involves multiple worlds, but individual worlds are allowed to handle their own affairs as they please. The only real argument against that I can come up with is the fact that worlds involved with the TSAB are called "TSAB administered worlds", implying that the TSAB is an authority over them, rather than "TSAB member worlds" or something, implying that member worlds collectively make up the TSAB.

The TSAB does seem to be a law unto itself, though. Certainly when all the shenanigans was going down during Strikers, for example, there was never any question of civilian oversight. Riot Force 6 didn't have to worry about getting permission from the President or the Prime Minister or anyone like that to unlock their limiters, they just had to get the okay from the TSAB's own authority figures. Whether this extends all the way down to every level of government (are beat cops E- or F-rank TSAB mages? Is the entire Midchildian civilization a benevolent dictatorship with the TSAB running the show, no questions asked?) is an open question.

Well, they are in Mid-Childa, which is TSAB Administrated World #1, and the highest authorities we've seen from there are the three legendary admirals and those three brains-in-jars that Jail backstabbed. So, in my headcanon at least, Mid is actually under direct TSAB ruling. What I find odd is that the Saint Church, specifically their military arm, is on at least equal standing with the TSAB forces in authority. I mean, how big is the Saint Church really? I am aware that they have churches in some planets, they run orphanages and schools, and their military arm is a separate force.

Speaking of the Saint Church, I rewatched StrikerS and really, I can't get over the fact that the Saint's Armor is an insanely broken ability. It rendered anybody practically invulnerable to all but the most powerful attacks, and I'm pretty sure that even in the warring period of Ancient Belka, few would even have the abilities equaling or exceeding Breaker-level magic. Although one thing is kinda puzzling to me. Vivio and Olivie (basically the same person, but that's not the point) are the only two known people who have used this ability, yet there's, or at least there's supposed to be, an entire group of people who descended from the other members of the Saint King Alliance, who are also genetically modified with relics, so there should be at least one person who possesses a watered down version of the Saint's Armor... Holy Crap! Maybe Victoria does!

[up][up] Uhm... While marriages between different noble families of (Ancient?) Belka are certainly possible, I somehow can't really see the royals actually going with it - I'd imagine, they'd want to keep a really tight control over the power of their bloodlines.

On the other hand, Vivio really does have a very watered down version of genetic memory, Olive's. And while that can be explained as a result of cloning - hell, Zwei has some of Einz's memories! - but, still, genetic memory is the Ingvalt bloodline's thing. And Sieg gets a little more than just combat experience of her ancestors.

Alternatively, Kaiser mode might be something that is explicitly activated only when a person carrying the bloodline takes a relic into their body. Thus, only the chosen Sägebrecht will have it.

If Midchilda is actually under direct TSAB control, then that's definitely a little weird because it effectively makes the premier magical civilization in the Nanohaverse a military junta. The three legendary admirals seemed to be basically uncontested authority figures — benevolent ones, sure, but it still seems weird to me.

As far as the Saint Church, my headcanon is that they're basically the organization representing the Belkan diaspora post-Saint King War. They seem to operate largely outside the authority of the TSAB and have a semi-autonomous region under their control on Midchilda, and have an outsized influence beyond that because they have a large number of modern Belkan practitioners, including people with rare skills unique to the Belkan bloodlines (like Carim's prophecy). That said, does the Saint Church actually have an explicitly military arm, or does it just have a bunch of nuns who happen to be badasses because of the aforementioned modern Belkan practitioners? And actually, while I'm thinking about that, have we seen any members of the Saint Church who aren't combat-capable mages? I wonder if the Saint Church is a militaristic order, like Shaolin monks learning kung fu?

The Saint Armor I sort of figured was an aspect of the amplifier relic, or even the link with the Saint Cradle, rather than being a Sagebrecht family technique — especially given that it's never mentioned again after Strikers, not even on the level of Vivio learning to use a watered down version.

Regarding that Reflection preview, I'm sure someone who actually recognizes those characters will get more out of it than me, but I'm mostly happy to see that Rein Zwei is around. Also, Sleepytime Rein is officially the cutest Rein, which is saying something because Rein has a lot of incarnations and all of them are adorable.
