For serious? It's not just a temporary thing like last time? I think this is the best news I've had in months.

You really do.

I can count on the fingers of one hand the number of authors whose ideas have made me genuinely jealous that I didn't come up with them first, and Ursula Vernon is one of them. Of course, it helps that I'm a big fan of created mythology, of which she is, in my opinion, one of the greatest masters.

"Placental mammals are disgusting."

I liked the one before. "Is this a shortcut?" "No." And that they're traveling underground and being all "What could possibly go wrong?" about that. Well, Digger'll probably get Properly Paranoid about it soon enough.

OK, it just ain't right that this comic should only have one page of discussion when other awesome comics like Gunnerkrigg Court and Order Of The Stick have upwards of sixty.

Of course, I don't really have anything to say. I only got up-to-date on it recently, and it looks like the storyline is wrapping up. I'll miss it when it finally goes, but it'll also be nice to see a webcomic with a definite end.

So Yeah. I like it a lot. Great art and ambience, and a fairly original fantasy storyline.

Those who feel that the fantasy genre has nothing more to offer than Tolkien ripoffs might do well to have a look: there are anthro animals, but no elves or dwarves (well, trolls make a cameo), no Dark Lord, there's a minor quest that doesn't take up a lot of the plot, and the cultures in the story are tribal or Indian-inspired rather than faux-mediaeval European. Also, the heroine is refreshingly pragmatic and prickly and doesn't take kindly to prophecies and mumbo-jumbo.

And how can you possibly dislike a comic where one of the main characters is a statue of Ganesha?

It does not matter who I am. What matters is, who will you become? - motto of Omsk Bird

Dok, the influencing societies difference was nice, but I think what I like the most about the way things have been handled so far is that Mrs. Vernon is working the biology of the animal characters' real-world counterparts into it, like for example the myth the hyenas use to explain their first-born death rate.

Taking time to work in those kind of details in a comic that isn't focusing on the "hard" Science Fiction scale, unlike say Schlock Mercenary or Freefall, is bonus points to me, especially when the base genre is "fantasy" (which all too often is used by the author as an excuse to make stuff up as they go, and then stumble from one retcon to another as time goes on, and problems in plot continuity pop up thanks to later made-up stuff).

I used to read Digger when t first started at Graphic Smash. But I've long since lost track of it. Maybe it's time to re-discover it. :)

The Continentals. It's like Sherlock Holmes meets the 60's tv show The Avengers with a dash of James Bond for flavor.

Have you read the short comics she's done? The one about monsters under the bed, and the Little Creature books?

Well, I'd advise you to check out the Other Works page on the Digger website. They're pretty good. Irrational Fears is about an author-insertion chupacabra going under the bed to fight monsters.

She's also the artist responsible for this picture, although naturally not the caption.

It pisses me off that it's managed to make the rounds the of the internet without garnering any more attention for her work.
