Speaking of weak enemies in Mementos, I completely understand why vanilla 5 made it so Ryuji's instakill perk didnt give exp because holy shit
Bewitching EyesOkay, this is something that I brought up last week in the Smash Bros. thread, but I feel is worth mentioning here:
I have another friend who seems to hate Persona 4 because he thinks it’s too cheery for him. No, I don’t understand it either. It’s odd considering that he is usually a happy go-lucky person. Besides, I don’t like the whole “games need to be dark and edgy and mature” mentality.
AAAAUUUUGGGHHHH!!!!I don't think it necessarily has to be about "works need to be dark and edgy" and more to do with "works have to be tonally coherent with the themes they're dealing with."
Persona 4 isn't THE MOST stupidly cheery game it's out there, but it's tone is surprisingly high and it's comedy often bordering on Comedic Sociopathy can feel out of place considering it's talking about a serial murder case in a rural town assorted with people having to confront fairly deep emotionnal scars in order to quite literally grow up. The fact it's juxtaposed with very goofy/silly antics can make the thing feel tonally dissonant, a simple example being how all of Kanji's arc revolves around him being labeled as gay by society for liking girly hobbies and him outgrowing this perception in order to find what he really wants to do/be being juxtaposed with Yosuke making a lot of borderline(or outright) homophobic jokes at his expanse being entirely played for laughs.
I don't mind it too much, but 4's tone never won it any points from me and I far prefer to it 5's ultimately hopeful but grounded feel or even 3's "bleak with a light of hope at the end" one.

"when you stare too long into the abyss, Xehanort takes advantage of the distraction to break into your house and steal all your shit."
I do understand what you’re saying.
I still find it odd to completely hate a game based on its tone, but again I’m more of a gameplay person.
Note this is a different friend than the one who I have to keep silent on spoilers. The one I’m talking about is not likely to care about spoilers.
AAAAUUUUGGGHHHH!!!!there's a pretty vocal hatedom for Persona 4 for a variety of reasons. Some of it because it's coming off the back of the more serious 3, some of it because people write it off because of the anime tropes it falls into sometimes, some of it because it IS basically anime
once i replay through 4 (in however long from now) i'll be able to give a better opinion on it, but i think the game is really REALLY good still in spite of its issues.
that being said... who cares if someone else hates something you like. there's ALWAYS going to be haters, its not like their opinion REALLY matters when it comes to like, tv shows or games or whatever

Honestly it’s the reason why that bugged me more than anything. Just wanted to say something about it.
It's a different kind of silly, where it doesnt lean in so deeply into modern or even back then common anime tropes, which is what really drives people up a wall.
Like Lisa is a tsundere wirh the tsun horns aimed directly at Eikichi, not Tatsuya the guy she likes. Which is one of the worse things prevalent even back then that tsunderes are violent towards the guy she likes.

Every accusation by the GOP is ALWAYS a confession.Ok, now I’m way more calmed down, I guess I honestly just have a hard time conceiving that people can dislike games for things that don’t have to do with gameplay.
How are you enjoying Persona 3? I’ve actually yet to play it. (I have FES, but haven’t played it. I’ve played 5 and have watched 4’s anime. Yeah I really need to play Golden on my Vita and Royal on my PS 4.)
Persona 3... is a mixed bag.
The story? The characters? The overall setting? Literally every piece of the writing has been absolutely phenomenal except for one disgusting scene. I will say with absolute confidence that this is one of the most invested I've been in a story in a JRPG for a while now. I'm loving so much more of the cast than I ever thought I would.
The gameplay... is the exact opposite. My stance on it might be particularly harsh compared to most people, but the gameplay is just bad. and i dont mean in a "oh it just hasn't aged well" way. i mean that the battle system is so abhorrently broken that the game is NOT fun to play or grow in. there are so many examples i could give; the weakness/knockdown system means that fights are either boring slogs or pointlessly easy, accuracy feels so bad, status ailments are useless until they're mandatory, persona exp scales horribly, random difficulty spikes with no good way to grind, you can accidentally lock yourself in an impossible to win scenario...
it's just. so. bad. and special mention to the AI party members which i honestly did not mind for most of the game, but they become immensely frustrating in prolonged fights ESPECIALLY when you need them to do something else mid-turn and you can't update their tactics for it. i wish i could say that i appreciated them, but unfortunately the charm of everyone feeling like an individual doesn't make up for the AI making outright game-ending decisions.
but, in spite of all the issues with persona 3's battle system and how not fun it is... the story and characters ABSOLUTELY make the game worth it. like, incredibly so. i honestly might have put down the game around the sleeping table if it were less phenomenal, but, 3's story and characters are so well-written and motivations are so dynamic it's not something i can give up on.
i think, my only criticisms are... some social links are pretty poor/boring, junpei gets over his jealousy thing super unceremoniously despite being a plot point for like two or three months, and that the game doesn't give ANY reason for the main character to be invested in SEES- which is at complete odds with the rest of the cast. that's it.
i am VERY excited to finish this game.

Yeah, P5 put all the design efforts into the Palaces and none on Mementos.
At least Mementos enemies are on par with the last Palace, so you can blitz through the floors relatively easily.
