With the caveat that I'm not an expert on the subject, the rationale I keep hearing over and over is that in Japan there's this idea that high school is the last time in your life you have much genuine freedom; once you get out you're expected to be a corporate slave living a mundane and uninteresting life, which is exactly the kind of thing people want to escape from in the first place.

It's not a coincidence that their birth rate is plummeting even faster than the rest of the world - Japan's population is projected to drop by more than half by the end of the century
That and Corona is wrecking havoc on Japan both in lives and financially.
And speaking of birthrates, every now and again, you get really weird stories of a guy hooking up with a doll.
"The Black Rage makes us strong, because we must resist its temptations every day of our lives or be forever damned!"Theyve been changing some unhealthy social values for sometime.
Like the whole fathers undergoing masochistic self-torture out of disgrace, including leaving their families, is still happening.
Japans male-dominant homeless population is partly a product of that. Men who "disgraced" themseves and did not wish to bring shame to their families. Thus most are elderly and middle age too.
Every accusation by the GOP is ALWAYS a confession. From a bigger POV, that's a significant amount of the population not stimulating the economy and not doing anything out of self-imposed shame. Waste of resources as cold as that may sound.
"The Black Rage makes us strong, because we must resist its temptations every day of our lives or be forever damned!"Which shows how some social values are just so uneahlthy and self-destructive.
This is why I can understand Gilberts situation a lot better in 3H even if it makes me want to strangle him. Its an entirely Eastern worldview that I cant grasp that well

Like Gilbert is still contributing to society by working for the Knights of Seiros and doing good.
Reminds me of that hobo that Joker becomes friends with.
I guess being a former mercenary hitman is a good reason to exile yourself but...
That's why dad's aren't in Pokemon and the only dad who is in Pokemon is a Gym Leader and is never home.
Even in Earthbound, Ness's dad is just a voice on the phone who gives him cash. And that's from the creator's own experience.
Well maybe Covid had given dads more time at home?

"The Black Rage makes us strong, because we must resist its temptations every day of our lives or be forever damned!"Yamato Hotsuin isnthenway he is precisely because he was raised like that from when he was a lil'kid. Which well we see the sociopathic tendencies he engages in thanks to the workaholic lifestyle thrust upon him from the momemt he could read and write.
Every accusation by the GOP is ALWAYS a confession.![]()
Yamato does have a heart as much as one can from that lifestyle.
He legit respects us and Makoto even if the latter relationship is a bit messed up and does care for his subordinates as long as they are competent while not being too harsh on the ones that fail him, coldness towards their deaths aside. And he genuinely wants what's best for humanity in his own twisted way even if he picks like the worst possible time. I can also respect that he legit plays by his own rules and admits if the player were to usurp him, he'd welcome it, and when warned by Polaris he and his allies will be overthrown eventually, he accepts it.
His meritocracy is basically Japan's work culture on super steroids and that's kind of a terrible idea though.
It is genuinely interesting that he genuinely doesn't know what compassion is because of how sheltered he is.
Reminds me of a certain classmate who was like really really terrible and when i said the word altruism in a presentation, she genuinely didn't know what it meant.

"The Black Rage makes us strong, because we must resist its temptations every day of our lives or be forever damned!"Did not expect to wander into a discussion of Yamato in this thread. Should look out for spoilers given I'm not sure how many people in here know anything about Devil Survivor.
Yamato seemed like a pretty happy guy though, all things considered, much morso than Anguished One (duh) or Ronaldo.

Well that's why you do her ad Dojima's S links to make them a happier family. I'm gonna be prioritizing different S Links in this playthrough but definitely gonna make sure I max out theirs still.
Also a random, dumb thought I always have evry time I mention "Nanako and Dojima" - her name is Nanako Dojima. Yet when you say Dojima you knew you mean only one person and it isn't her. It just never fails to cross my mind. Language is dumb.
You could refer to Dojima by his personal name (it's Ryotaro), but I guarantee nobody would know who you were referring to.
Bewitching EyesHas Leader Death = Instant Game Over ever been good? I first encountered this in FFXIII and everyone absolutely despised it. I thought it was a weird and unique quirk because FFXIII's system is such that it really isn't that crippling. But then I played SMT and Persona years later and discovered it's a series tradition. And like many traditions, it sucks and nobody actually likes it because this battle system is such that you can very easily die and then lose everything.
Most seem to agree SMTIV Apocalypse has the best gmeplay in the series and I definitely remember one thing it changed was Party Leader Death = Game Over was a special "App" you had to buy and not just the irremovable default.
I'm really wanting to play Apoc even more now.
I got to Shadow Yukiko at Level 7. So now I'm trying to grind, then dying and losing all my progress, then grinding some more, dying and losing all my progress again, etc.. Gonna be here a while.

Like the entire starting concept of this series was SMT but in highschool.
