I’ve played the Trails games and Tokyo Xanadu - I’ll check out the others, though. Thanks!

There's also Blue Reflection, a Magical Girl take on the formula.

The premise of Blue Reflection sounds amazing, but from the reviews I've seen it doesn't sound like the implementation is great.

I'd give it a shot anyway, but its quite expensive on Steam.

I'd take the same thing we got for the past three games a fourth time, really. Just remove the stupidass gay "jokes", and gender selection/ same sex romances options.

I remember one article that fantasized about a possible Persona that went edgy and featured your teen protagonists but as legit juvie delinquents.

Like go ham on Shadow issues and make them be uncomfortably relatable people

I wouldn't call Sho "uncomfortably relatable", but yeah, edginess for the sake of edigness is a no-no for me.

I feel like they were trying to go for that with Joker, but as with a lot of things about him, he's a walking compromise. He has flashes of personality and independent thought, like how you get questions that don't have a purely good answer, but he's still a completely interpretive character who's silent 95% of the time.

It's a shame, because some of his answers are wonderfully snarky. I wished in 5 more than any other Persona game that it would give me the option to go full criminal and kill my targets, but despite Joker's background and the premise, he's still a good guy, through and through. So even the roll playing aspect is frustrating. He's still set on a linear path to be a hero.

While "Time to button mash." and "Honey, I'm home!" are good quotes, they pale in comparison to Persona 4's "Be an ass and leave."

The legend has returned.

Proper roleplaying in JRPG's isn't much of a thing. Even stuff like Persona doesn't really have much substantial roleplaying in terms of the world reacting to what you do and giving you a lot of options in how you interact with people.

Compare that to something like a CRPG ala Planescape: Torment which has a ridiculous amount of different dialogue options so you can build a complex character and multiple different ways to solve problems and advance the story. (It's also proof that a silent protagonist *can* be a compelling character that the player cares about, albeit it's the only one I can think of that does this so well).

I wouldn’t even need roleplaying with Joker.

Just make him an actual character that talks or at least has a voice in the figurative sense.

To some extent you do get to actually roleplay, but only in a really limited sense. Who you decide to date or befriend is ultimately up to you, and you do get to influence the ending in the latter 3 Personas.

The only one of those that really matters or influences the game in any significant way is who you do and don't date, though. The endings aside from the golden ones are invariably some flavor of "you fucked up", and you only lose out on content for failing to befriend any given character entirely.

My main issue is that who you date is pretty divorced from anything that happens in the main story. It never affects any dialogue in the main story or how the other characters react to you.

Granted, this is a larger problem with the social sim stuff as a whole and part of why I'm not so hot on it anymore.

Actually its more the opposite of that. Dating sims specifically DO have relationships affect the plot as you get locked in a route and such. If they were following Dating sims you would have basically a set date to choose your girlfriend and that one would become official for the rest of the game.

Its something I really would like them to do tbh. It would be a factor of conversations, potentially change the powers of the MC and the GF, maybe a girlfriend combo attack. Heck they could even do a 2 person dungeon with the two of you having to work your way out via teamwork or something.

[up]Indeed, but the writers probably don't want to do that because it might be seen as deviating from the formula too much.

[up] Can still have that, just have that set before the big end date. Having it official actually adds a lot more antics options too for like the second half.

[up][up] Not really. They dabbled in it in P 4 G with the festival event.

Yeah it’s funny. Dating sims let you start a relationship around the beginning of the game.

Here though since you can only begin dating on the penultimate level of the social link, you start it around the Endgame.

Plus since the social link is already done by that point you have no incentive to further hang out with the person.

At this point Persona MC being a silent character feels like it's just an artifact of SMT. I feel it's telling when fans like the silent protagonists that have more personality than the blanker ones.

At the very least, having the selected dialogue be voiced would work wonders.

I want multiple endings in P6 that are determined by your Social Links with certain characters.

Devil Survivor 2 basically.

I feel like Persona 6 is due for some sort of shake-up that doesn't completely ditch the winning formula of Persona 3-5, but does make significant updates to it.

I think something slightly less structured would be an interesting change to make. Instead of dividing up days into arbitrary chunks of time like morning/afternoon/evening/night, give us an actual In-Universe Game Clock and let us decide how much time we want to spend on things instead of everything being just "one time segment". It'd give things a more Harvest Moon or Animal Crossing feel, which would be an interesting change. You'd probably have to just skip forward for certain activities rather than sitting through it for the whole in-game period (eg, you'd skip straight to when school lets out instead of having to wait for five real-time minutes for the in-game clock to advance to the end of the school day), but most things you'd be able to decide how long to do them.

I'd also like to see them moving away from "the alternate dimension where the dungeon crawling happens" and have the JRPG bits more tightly integrated with the daily life bits. You could still add some otherworldliness to it a la the Dark Hour in P3 (but all the fights happen there, instead of just Full Moon Shadows), but changes in the regular world would affect the shadow world and vice versa. How you'd switch from one to the other I'm not sure, but there a bunch of possibilities. Automatically at certain dates/times? The protagonist has an ability that lets them shift at will? There are certain locations where you can cross from one world to the other?

One big thing about P6 that I wonder about is its theme, though. Persona 3 was unabashedly about Death and was a really compelling take on the subject. P4 was about Truth but sort of bungled the execution a bit. P5 was supposed to be about... I'm actually not even sure, either Rebellion or Justice, but either way it was mostly surface level and kinda meh. What would P6's one-word high-level concept be about? Love would be an obvious Big Important Thing to theme it after, to match Death and Truth (P5's is a bit weak either way, imo), but you'd need P3-tier writing to make a solid story out of it, and I'm not sure what a Love-themed antagonist would look like. Hm, maybe Faith? Faith in yourself, faith in your friends, faith in god, faith in humanity, losing faith, finding faith, having faith... You could cover a lot of angles with that. The antagonist would either be about abusing faith (eg, they get everyone to put faith in them and then betray that trust) or about how faith is for losers and no one should ever trust in anything ever.

I could see that.

[up] [up] That's mainly my frustration. It makes sense in SMT to have a silent protagonist since the games are themed around your choices, but it's like Persona only cribs the surface appeal of visual novels. You don't get to have a love interest that substantially changes the story, there's no side routes to experience aside from 1's Snow Queen, your choices are limited and mainly just effect a few flavor responses, you can't get different endings and bosses like SMT, and you don't even get a love interest until late in a playthrough.

In the end, you're left with a series that does a lot of things at once, but none are especially fleshed out, either as an SMT installment nor as a visual novel.

I don't think Persona wants to be a VN at all. It's an RPG, you can romance people in plenty of RPG's. Sometimes it changes the story sure but not always.

I'd like different endings and bosses though.
