So, what would you guys like to see in a hypothetical Persona 6?

I was thinking it might be kind of cool if people who weren’t in the party or social links would actively be enemies of the protagonist? Something like the Matrix, I guess?

That might be too much like Caligula Effect, though...

[up][up] Belligerent Sexual Tension is a thing, after all. Considering how these pairs (aside from Junpei and Yukari) also tend to get shipped with each other...

[up] If they're going with the Social Link system again, I'd like it for them to mix it up. We've had "talk to this guy and get enough points for the next rank" for three games already. More storylocked link would also be nice. It worked wonderfully for Sojiro. The party members especially need it.

Whatever Persona 6 is I want it to be a huge shakeup after Persona 5 being the third game in a row with the same rough style.

So, what would you guys like to see in a hypothetical Persona 6?
  • College aged protagonist or just older ones in general.
  • Gay options for those who want them.
  • Social Links having an impact on the story.
  • Gender options for the main character ala P3P.
  • At least one NPC from a previous game returning as a party member (My vote's Nanako but Chihaya or Hifumi'd be nice too.)
  • At least one non-NPC returning from the previoud game as a party member (Mitsuru or Rise, please.).

I expect none of them but would especially like the first and one of the last two to happen.

Social Links among your party members, kinda like the pairings in Fire Emblem.

Ever since I read a fic about it (though they stopped pretty quickly), I thought it'd be nice to see the party members bond with each other as well.

I like the idea of Nanako coming back as a party member. I emphatically do not like the idea of college-aged protagonists. The high school fantasy is my favorite part of this series. It's The Breakfast Club with demons and superpowers.

Well we've been doing breakfast club for 3 games now. More if you count the 1st 2 games.

I think we can afford branching out to new grounds.

There would never be college aged protags, they would completely lose their audience they have gathered over 3 games. Spinoffs and Anime and Manga are a complete non-starter with that. Not to mention the game structure would need to be thrown out.

Gender options for the lead though is something they really should do at the very least.

Ditching the silent protag is something also they should just completely do instead of halfassed like P5.

Romance options that actually affect the game is something I have wanted since 4 and they really should implement.

Even the mainline SMT games typically star high schoolers.

Nothing would really need to change all the much for college, honestly. You'd probably just have more freedom during class itself than the strict way it's handled in 3-5.

They're probably not going to at this point since even 1 and 2 were (mostly) about high school students, and that will forever be in vogue with an otaku audience, but it's an established brand at this point. They could do it, and if they did it well I don't think people would reject it outside the initial "shock" of a slightly different core premise.

[up]x4

The inconsistent schedules would wreck havoc on the calendar, the 'too much free time' stereotype is real. Everything would have to be bogged down with confusing calendar dates on what you can do when and all that. How you form a group and the social aspects would have to be something else.

You would have to get bogged down explaining MORE things to the player as most of the people playing the game would not have ever gone to college. You might as well not actually set it at college at that point to be honest.

And then there is the crushing stereotype of what happens AFTER college, for most its true in Japan as well.

Considering school is a few lines of dialogue and a couple of loading screens most of the time... so? If an erratic schedule is too much of a problem, just have the student attend classes 5-6 days a week. Days off were more valuable for social links anyway, so there's potential for the game to be markedly more flexible and easy to 100% if the player has more freedom to play around with the schedule.

Otherwise, college lends itself to the same kind of plot and even gameplay structure of the Persona games just as well, if not better, since there's more room for extracurricular shenanigans, as high school does.

As far as what happens after, why does that even matter? You're usually a 2nd year high school student in these games as is. It's not going to cover your paying student loans or actually starting your career if it's just your character's first or second year of college.

For a hypothetical P6, I would really ask for gender choice. However, also I would like you play as twins where whoever you chose, the other becomes your first party member as The Magician. As for romance options, I say at least some party members being bi because I like more options while Social Links only can be progressed by plot, so they can feel more connected.

[up][up][up] In Japan the norm for college is 2 days a week at random times, some of the classes you are not actually required to show up at all... you turn in a report at the end and bam passed. Instead of 6 days a week for Highschool.

The whole Teacher asking you a question in class mechanic would absolutely NOT exist in a college setting. You wouldn't be spending much of the game there.

College life in Japan revolves around formal 'Teams' and informal 'Circles' and lots of partying. College Circles are where 99% of all doujins come from.

And considering how College is the age where people stop wearing uniforms they go crazy in Japan, the more gaudy and accessories the better, even for the guys.

At most maybe you could build a game around an Occult Circle but at that point your basically building a whole new franchise instead of a Persona game.

Most of all though the people who play Persona are 20-29, they wanna look at their college years with Rose Colored Glasses.

All this is also the big reason why College Anime don't work.

Wouldn't be interesting to the primary demographic of the game. And wouldn't be a Persona game.

You could maybe pull it off as a mainline SMT game maybe.

[up][up] Well there is The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel which takes much of Persona's stuff and puts it in a fantasy style with a huge helping of Suikoden I style of political story telling. Although technically the 7th game of the series, the earlier games are more JRPG with a HEAVY emphasis on world building and such. The sky trilogy has my fav lead out of all video games, she is so awesome.

Tokyo Xanadu is basically Persona with a bit of Trails in an Action RPG game.

Atelier games takes Persona's time style things with a huge helping of crafting. Arland trilogy is my personal favs.

Sakura Wars was basically Persona before Persona existed. Heck Dating Sim in general are basically half of Persona 3-5.
