Proposal: The Great Subjective Migration

(Yo, I believe I am posting this in the correct section, as it pertains to the overall righteousness of the Wiki. If I'm not, could a moderator or some other entity in a position of excellence shimmy it over to the right section? Thanks!)

WHAT IT IS: A wiki-wide project to move all Subjective Tropes from the main articles to the new YMMV tab system. Possible forms of notification include new Edit Tips, a notice on the top of the pages, loud yodelers and the Twilight Bark.

WHAT IT DOES: It popularizes the YMMV tabs, and significantly lowers the population of Subjectives on the main pages to nothing (since they'll all be in YMMV), which can be agreed upon as totally excellent.

WHAT IT MEANS: It means more Main pages will have pants (Non-Intrusive Tabs) on them so instead of messy dirt and dark (Subjectives on the Main) there will be pretty things there now to be happy (Users).

I think we are already supposed to be doing #1. I've been doing so, anyway.

Yes, I believe #1 is the policy; we just haven't organized any mass editing yet. I believe the Google Incident put that on the backburner.

Anyway, this thread inspired me to create YMMV.Gunnerkrigg Court and move some stuff there.

Editors learn from reading, so the most effective way to start would be with the most widely-viewed pages.

It still doesn't hurt to call additional attention to project. Many hands make light work.

i've already YMMV'd most of the work pages i usually edit, and some of them were pretty big (-is still tired-), but i could check out a few more and start on them. i'd be hesitant to edit works i'm less familiar with, though.

BUT, i think attracting attention to this is never a bad thing. maybe we could post in this thread whenever we successfully tab a work? more people might see it if it gets bumped regularly.

Having an icon (like the discussion page ect) on each works page to the Tab would be a huge help in pointing people in that direction.

hey guys! i thought to take advantage of the fact that my boss is out of town to create some new YMMV tabs (yay for procrastination!), so i took a look at the series i have listed in my TroperTales. One True Pairing list to start with those. (let's just say i've got a... fairly large list of OTPs. to put it mildly. LOL).

i have to say i was very pleasantly surprised to see how much the YMMV Index has grown! the last time i created a YMMV tab for a work (which i'm sure wasn't too long ago), the page barely scrolled! so i'm guessing this YMMV migration thing is flowing well. i'm glad smile

anyway, i created tabs for the following works:

i got as far as hitting the "save" button on Mobile Suit Gundam Wing, when i got that adorable "the database hates you right now" message, so i had to stop. but i intend to go back to my list tomorrow.

as far as making people aware of the move goes, i've been leaving commented notes in the source code whenever i move a trope to the YMMV or trivia tabs. i think it's the most effective way of going about it.

If this is something we want people to do, why don't we add it to those tips that appear every time you go to edit the page. It seems to be something that's being pushed hard, and yet it isn't there. If people are actually reading those tips, then that seems like it would be one of the most effective ways to get the point across.

how's this for the edit tip?...

  • if you're adding an example, make sure to place it where it's supposed to go. subjective tropes go in the YMMV tab, and stuff like the moments, fridge, Tear Jerkers and Nightmare Fuel tropes have their own tabs as well. if you don't see one of these tabs for the work, feel free to create it.

...where "create it" should be linked to a how-to page, if possible. a lot of people have no idea how to go about creating namespace pages.

(i should not be allowed to write out tips, i talk too much for that).

I have a complete list of all tropes with the subjective banner on my user page, if anyone wants to use it as a reference when creating YMMV pages.

(I created it because I couldn't find an easy to use reference that included all the subjective tropes in one place. The YMMV Index is missing some subjective tropes or has quite a few tropes on sub-indexes rather than together in one place.)

Excuse me, but QUIT PUTTING FRIDGES IN THE SUBJECTIVE SPACE FRIDGES HAVE THEIR OWN SPACE

I'm feeling strangely happy now, contented and serene. Oh don't you see, finally I'll be, somewhere that's green...

Crowning moments do to. Most people probably didn't know that Fridge had it's own namespace.

Yeah, it's easy to be unaware of the existence of specific Fridge pages, as they're rarely encountered and not automatically generated. I'm actually a bit confused as to why we have a separate Fridge namespace, as it seems like just a subset of YMMV anyway (and a pretty small one, at that.)

Fridge came before YMMV. Whether or not Fast Eddie decides to keep it is up to him.

personally, i tend to lump everything into the YMMV tab at first. i think there's no point to having a fridge or a cowning moment tab with only one example in it. if there are three or more examples of each, then i move them to their respective tabs.

Yeah, I'm not sure it's worth it any more to have a separate Fridge namespace. I'd just put them all in YMMV.
